Feb. 10, 2014. Today was the first day for candidates to file for races in the 2014 election, and when the clock struck noon on Monday, several candidates were in line, prepared to file.

“We were very busy at 12. It was a great day and we are very pleased with the candidates who came in,” Watauga County Elections Director Jane Ann Hodges said. “I think this will be a great election year.”

Four people filed for the three open seats on the Watauga County Board of Commissioners: incumbent David Blust (R), incumbent Billy Kennedy (D), Allen Trivette (R) and current school board member Barbara Kinsey (D). Two candidates filed for the three open seats on the nonpartisan Watauga County Board of Education: Tiffany Christian and Ronald Holste.

Sheriff Len Hagaman (D) filed for re-election, and Randy Townsend (R) of Boone filed as his challenger. Clerk of Court Diane Deal filed for re-election, too.

For the N.C. Senate, Democrat Josh Brannon filed for Sen. Dan Soucek’s seat, and Democrat Sue Counts filed to run against State Rep. Jonathan Jordan. According to a list compiled by the N.C. State Board of Elections, Jordan and Soucek have yet to file.

While not in the database yet, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx also announced earlier today that she filed in a press release
