Oct. 8, 2012. The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a “Meet the Candidate Forum” on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. The event, which includes question and answer – not debate, takes place in the large courtroom of the Watauga County Courthouse on King Street in downtown Boone and starts at 5:30 p.m.

Though all of the candidates’ attendance has not been confirmed, the Boone Chamber has invited national, state and local candidates for the forum. Invited candidates include those running for U.S. Senate and House, N.C. Senate and House, N.C. governor and local candidates in the Watauga County Board of Education and Watauga County Board of Commissioners races.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • 5:30 – Candidates for U.S. Senate and House, Candidates for N.C. Governor and N.C. Senate and House
  • 6:30 – Candidates for Watauga County Board of Commissioners
  • 7:30 – Candidates for Watauga County Board of Education

The format will be ‘round robin’ with the same questions asked to all of the candidates. The audience will be allowed to submit written questions during the forum, and all questions will be asked by a moderator. Each response is limited to a one minute, and each candidate will have a chance to end with a two-minute closing statement.

A press release from the Boone Chamber added, “This forum is not intended to be a debate between candidates or between candidates and members of the audience but rather an opportunity for the citizenry to hear each candidate’s position on topics important to all.”

In order to maintain decorum, the press release stated, that political literature and signage will not be allowed in the courtroom.
