Oct. 18, 2013. The Beech Mountain Chamber hosts a candidate forum at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Buckeye Recreation Center atop Beech Mountain for the contested town council race.

Blowing Rock Chamber Director Kate Gavenus said members of the public can submit questions to the Chamber leading up to the event, and then those questions will be compiled and condensed. Those questions will then be given to the candidates the evening before the forum.

Beech LogoThe forum begins with a two-minute personal introduction and expression of platform from the candidates. Then the candidates will answer the prepared questions before the intermission. During the intermission, candidates and the public may mingle.

After the intermission, members of the audience may ask questions. Timed responses to the questions are limited to 90 seconds.

“We are trying to keep it formal, but also make sure everybody gets their opinions in and have their positions stated,” Gavenus said.

Calder Smoot is the moderator. The forum is expected to conclude at 8:30 p.m., however an extension is allowed if everyone hasn’t had a chance to answer the final questions from the audience.

Five candidates are running for Beech Mountain Town Council. Those include incumbents E. Rick Miller, Paul Piquet and Cynthia Keller. New challengers include Barry Schorr and Eddie Plante.
