George Raymond Cline, age 66, of Brown Trout Road, Banner Elk, died Tuesday morning, September 4, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Charles Risk, D. Sept. 4, 2012
Mr. Charles Risk, age 88, of NC Hwy 194 North, Todd, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 4, 2012 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born June 18, 1924 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late William Harvey and Margaret Clark Risk. He was a US Army Veteran and a retried building contractor. Mr. Risk was an active member of South Fork Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was active in the Todd community, serving as a Volunteer Fire Fighter and First Responder and was a member of the Todd Ruritan Club. Charlie was an ardent hunter and enjoyed making cabinets and furniture.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years; Mary June Miller Risk, three children; David Risk and wife Darlene of Boone, Linda Miller and husband Keith of Statesville and Kevin Risk of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; five grandchildren; Jeff Risk and wife Angela, Jonathan Risk and wife Jenny, Kim LeFever and husband Bryan, Jeremy Miller and wife Michelle and Jason Miller and wife Lisa, fourteen great grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers; Don, Bob and Tom Risk.
Funeral services for Mr. Charles Risk will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at South Fork Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Homer Murdock, Rev. Keith Miller and Rev. Jeff Risk. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from noon until 2 o’clock at South Fork Baptist Church. At other times friends may call at the residence of David Risk, 1046 Deerfield Road, Boone. The family respectfully requests no flowers and suggests memorials to South Fork Baptist Church, 157 South Fork Church Road, Todd, NC 28684 or to the Howell Cemetery Fund, in care of Ruby Trivette, 10550 NC Hwy 194 North, Todd, NC 28684 or to Global Cross Ministries, 307 Auten Circle, Mount Holly, NC 28120.

Richard Howlett, D. Sept. 1, 2012
Richard Howlett, age 76, of Highway 194 North, Boone, died Saturday afternoon, September 1, 2012, at University Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Mr. Howlett is survived by one son, Richard Earl Howlett, Jr.; two daughters, Cheryl Simpson and Helen Buchanan; nine grandchildren and three step-children.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held Saturday morning, September 8, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Lynn Powers.
The family will receive friends following the service.

William ‘Bill’ Winkler, D. Sept. 1, 2012
William G. (“Bill”) Winkler passed away September 1, 2012 at home surrounded by his children. He was born in 1928 to the late James B. and Carrie Winkler. He was a lifelong resident of Boone.
Mr. Winkler graduated from Watauga High School in 1945 where he was Class President. After obtaining his civil engineering degree from N.C. State College in Raliegh, he served for two years with the U.S. Army in Korea. He returned to Boone where he met and married the love of his life, Sybil “Polly” Winkler, who predeceased him.
Upon his return to Boone, Mr. Winkler joined his father at Winkler Heating and Plumbing where they kept Boone warm and helped build the growing town together for twenty years. In 1997, Mr. Winkler’s son, Bennett, joined him as a third generation plumber.
In 1978, Mr. Winkler joined Appalachian State University as Director of Mechanical Engineering and was promoted to Associate Vice-Chancellor for Physical Operations. He retired from ASU in 1992, but continued to work each day in the plumbing business until June 2012.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Susan and her love Fred Messinger of Boston, MA; Carol and her husband Bill Newnam of Atlanta, GA; Bennett and his love Kerry Clark of Vilas, NC; Gray and his wife Miel Corbett of Portland, OR; his sister-in-law Alma Winkler of Boone, married to the late James W. Winkler, and their family; and his five grandchildren, Rachel, Daniel and Mitchell Lurie and Cori and Jordan Newnam.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held Tuesday afternoon, September 4, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 130 of Boone and The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90.
The family will receive friends, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

The family would also like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Medi-Home Hospice for their compassion and skill in guiding us in caring for our father in his final weeks.

Glenda Owens Isaacs, D. Aug. 30, 2012
Glenda Lou Owens Isaacs, 77, of Isaacs Branch Rd., Sugar Grove, died Thursday evening, August 30, 2012, at her home. Born December 10, 1934 in Avery County, she was a daughter of Emma Jean Meredith Owens and the late Grady Owens.
Mrs. Isaacs was of the Baptist faith. After retiring as cafeteria manager and group manager at Watauga Opportunities, Creekside and Kellwood Group Homes, she continued providing respite care for children and adults with special needs. Her favorite pastime was tending her flower gardens and quilting.
Mrs. Isaacs is survived by her son, John Isaacs and wife, Michelle, of Vilas; her daughter, Della Campbell and husband, Rick, ,of Butler, TN.; her grandson, Dylan Isaacs of Vilas; her mother, Emma Jean Owens of Newland; and four brothers, Bob Owens and wife, Alice, of Spruce Pine, Cliff Owens and wife, Dot, of Henrico, Jake Owens and wife, Suzanne, of Newland, and Denver ‘Butch’ Owens and wife, Susie, of Bakersville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ed Isaacs; sister, Doris Ann McGuire; brother-in-law, Ray McGuire; nephew, Anthony McGuire; and her father, Grady Owens.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 2, 2012, at 4 o’clock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastor Toby Oliver. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 until 4 o’clock at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Henson’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Daryl Lee “Whitey” Potbury, D. Aug. 28, 2012
Daryl Lee “Whitey” Potbury, age 65, of Lenoir, died Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Catawba County Hospice and Palliative Care in Newton.
Mr. Potbury is survived by his wife, Judy Story Phillips of Lenoir; one step-son, Robert W. Phillips, III, and one step-granddaughter, Alexus Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dallas Ewin Potbury and Mildred Joyce Saile Potbury.
A Celebration Of Life will be held Saturday, September 1, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Union Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Sam Craven.
The family will receive friends following the service.
