Bette Oakman Hodson, D. Oct. 20, 2012
Bette Oakman Hodson, age 83, of Boone, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012, with all of her children by her side, at her home.
Mrs. Hodson raised her family in Homestead, Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Homestead, where she was a Sunday School Teacher. Bette volunteered for many years with the Girl Scouts of America in the Miami District. She loved to go camping. Bette was very involved with the Garden Club, Bridge Club, and the Women’s Club of Homestead.
After her husband Tom passed away in 1976, she moved to Boone. She was a prominant member at Boone United Methodist Church, where she participated in Circle Five, the Joy Group, and taught Sunday School. Bette became a member of the Red Hat Society and continued to play bridge. Bette will be missed by her family and many wonderful friends.
Mrs. Hodson is survived by three daughters, Irene H. Kerr and husband John of Aurora, Colorado, Leasa H. Cooper and husband Robert of East Bend, North Carolina, and Katrina H. Courtney and husband Preston of Orlando, Florida; one son, Sherwood Hodson and wife Jayne of Blowing Rock; two sisters, Katie Sterba of Tampa, Florida, and June Thomas and husband Claude of Charleston, South Carolina, and two sisters-in-law, Jannas Harrington of Gainesville, Florida and Betty Bennett of South Carolina. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Sherwood Hodson, III; her father and mother, Lee and Annie Mae Sims Oakman, and one brother, Sims Oakman.
Funeral services for Bette Oakman Hodson will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 23, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Boone United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Marianne Romanat and Dr. George Naff. Burial will be in Miami Memorial Park in Miami, Florida.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Marsha G. Jones, D. Oct. 19, 2012
Marsha G. Jones, age 49, of 240 Hires Drive, Boone, died Friday, October 19, 2012.
Ms. Jones was born August 9, 1963 in Watauga County, a daughter of Betty Phillips Jones and the late Roy William Jones. She was a former operations clerk for Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation.
In addition to her mother, Ms. Jones is survived by her special friend, Denice Bruce of Boone; two sisters, Donna Jones and husband Johnny of Elkin, and Deborah Thompson and husband Mike of Lenoir; two brothers, Randy Jones and wife Carolyn of Boone, and Danny Jones and wife Pam of Roxboro; two nieces, Kinsey Jones June and husband Andy of Greeneville, and Laney Jones of Roxboro, and seven nephews, Brandon Thompson of Lenoir, Tyson Thompson of Greensboro, Wesley Jones of Huntersville, Patrick Jones and fiancee Elizabeth Dobson of Cary, and Harrison Jones or Roxboro. She is also survived by seven aunts and one uncle.
Graveside services for Marsha G. Jones will be conducted Monday morning, October 22, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend Mike Townsend and Reverend Ed Ford.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. At other times the family will be at the mother’s home,Betty Jones, 339 Ray Brown Road, Boone.

Myrtle Ann Harris Church, D. Oct. 18, 2012.
Myrtle Ann Harris Church, age 61, of 887 Hidden Valley Drive, Boone, died Thursday morning, October 18, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City.
Mrs. Church is survived by one son, Spencer Church of the Foscoe Community; two step-daughters, Pam Church Smith and husband Harvey of Foscoe, and Lori Church; one sister, Cora McKensie of Foscoe; one brother, Henry Harris and wife Kathy of Butler, Tennessee, and a special friend, James Norwood of Foscoe. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Finley E. Church; her father and mother, Dewey M. Harris and Elnor Hartley Harris; one sister, Nadine Richardson; one brother, William Dewey Harris; one step-daughter, Sandra Shaw, and one nephew, Martin Harris.
Funeral services for Myrtle Ann Harris Church will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 23, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Jeff Fox. Burial will follow in the Foscoe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of her sister, Cora McKenzie, 180 Byrd Street, the Foscoe Community.
