Arvil Greene

Arvil Greene, D. Oct. 16, 2012
Arvil Clayton Greene, 78, of American Legion Road, Greer, SC, passed away Tuesday morning, October 16, ,2012 at the home of his son, Rev. Roger Greene in Greer, after a lengthy illness. Arvil was born in Watauga County to Clayton Carroll Greene and Rosa Bryan Greene.

He graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education and Social Studies. During his career, he was a social worker, a HUD worker, and retired as an insurance salesman. Arvil enjoyed gardening, playing checkers, walking on the beach, flea marketing, and especially, talking and joking with people.

He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Greene is survived by his wife, Barbara Townsend Greene; three sons, Arvil Dean Greene, James Edward Greene, (Carolyn) and Rev. Roger Alan Greene (Cheryl); one daughter, Sandra Greene Winebarger (Ernest Guinn); five grandsons, Shane Greene, JB Greene, Chip Greene (Cally), Michael Hardy, and Kyle Bryson; eight granddaughters, Kelly Greene, Krista Greene, Tanya Nichols (Dustin), Jessica Winebarger, Jennifer Winebarger, Savanna Wyatt (Jeremy), Heather Greene and Tara Brown; two great-granddaughters, Aaliyah Greene and Kahlyn Nichols; five great grandsons, Konner Calhoun, Kaleb Calhoun, Jaxon Wyatt, Kolton Nichols and Channing Brown; two sisters, Elise Greene Tucker and Carolyn Greene Snyder (Carol); brother-in-law, Don Elliott; three sisters-in-law, Viola Greene, Mabel Jones, and Shirley Icenhour (David); eight nephews, four nieces, a number of great-nephews and great-nieces; and former daughter-in-law, Debbie Greene.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Theresa Greene; sister, Edith Greene Elliott and brother, Raymond Greene.

Funeral services for Arvil Clayton Greene will be conducted Thursday, October 18, 2012, at 7:00 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Herbert McCoy and Rev. Dean Elliott. Burial will be at sea at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM prior to the service at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home and Crematory. At other times, the family will be at the home of James Greene at 856 Mountain View Baptist Church Road, Deep Gap, NC.

Bill Winkler, D. Oct. 15-16, 2012
Mr. William Ralph “Bill” Winkler, Jr. age 83, of Winklers Creek Road, Boone, passed away at his residence. Born July 28, 1929 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late William Ralph and Effie Vance Winkler.

Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone and the founding member and sponsor of the Daniel Boone Fisherman Club. He was an US Air Force Veteran and a member of the American Legion. Bill was a car salesman for over 64 years and was currently working at Boone Ford Lincoln Mercury. He began his career in the automotive industry working at Winkler Motor Company. Bill loved his family, his work and his many friends in the community.

He is survived by his wife; Evelyn, his children; William Ralph Winkler, III and wife Rhonda of Boone, Melinda Cook and husband Sonny of Huntersville, Deborah Cole and husband Tyler of Asheboro, Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook of Blowing Rock, Amy Moore and husband Butch of Sugar Grove, and Holly Winkler and husband Glenn Hubbard of Greenville, NC, twelve grandchildren; Ashley W. Price, William Ralph Winkler, IV, Jessica W. Hall, Jeffrey S. Cook, Karen C. McVickers, Shana R. Harris, Jaimee R. Gibbs, Jonathan K. Cole, David J. Cole, A. Morgan Winkler, Jennifer S. Coffey, and Joshua M. Moore, seventeen great grandchildren; two sisters; Carolyn Congleton of Barbourville, KY, and Marbeth Fidler and husband Carl of Boone.

Funeral services for Mr. William Ralph “Bill” Winkler, Jr. will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock at the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following for those attending, as well as those unable to attend, the service. Graveside services and burial will be private.

Etta Davis, D. Oct. 15, 2012
Etta Davis, age 91, of 727 Dutch Creek Road, Banner Elk, died Monday morning, October 15, 2012, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

Mrs. Davis was born in the Dutch Creek Community, March 12, 1921, a daughter of the late Walter Eugene Eggers and Tempie Catherine Shook Eggers. She was a homemaker and a member of Clarks Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Davis is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Triplett and husband Roy of Vilas, and Brenda Davis of Banner Elk; two granddaughters, Lori Miller and fiance Nathan Church of Boone, and Lynn Hogan and husband James of Fleetwood; two grandsons, Bryan Miller of Banner Elk, and Jordan Triplett and wife Crystal of Vilas; three great-granddaughters, Ashley Kaczmarczyk, Chloe Miller, and Victoria Smith; three great-grandsons, Cody Swift, Corey Swift, and Patrick Smith; two great great-granddaughters, Taylor and Olivia Kaczmarczyk, and two sisters, Mary Lou Eggers and husband Hoover of Banner Elk, and Betty Faye Hughes and husband Dee of Roan Mountain, Tennessee. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hildreth Davis; one daughter, Patricia Miller; three sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services for Etta Eggers Davis will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 17, 2012, at 1:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 1:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Zane Tester. Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 12:00 until 1:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Sarah Elizabeth Brown ‘Gran’ Greene, of Brownwood Rood, Deep Gap, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012 at her home. Born July 11, 1924 in Glade Springs, Virginia, she was a daughter of Jim and Pansy Potter Brown. Mrs. Greene was a member of Pilot Mountain Baptist Church. Sarah was affectionately called ‘Gran’ by her grandchildren and family, who were the loves of her life. Her passion was growing, tending and canning the vegetables from her gardens.

Surviving are her children, Geneva Greene Hennessee and husband, David, Kathleen Judy Greene, and Lawrence Greene, all of Deep Gap; five grandchildren, Richard Watson, Karen Watson Norris, Valerie Presnell Saunders, Sonja Greene Watson, and Ashley Houck; sixteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Danny Presnell of Deep Gap; two sisters-in-law, Lucy Moretz of Boone, and Thelma Brown of Creston; two brothers-in-law, Roy Greene of Atlanta, Ga., and Ray Norris of Boone; and her companion of more than 20 years, Clyde Miller and his family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Odis Greene, daughter, Darleen Greene Presnell; granddaughter, Amy Presnell Trivette; five brothers, Kay, Glenn, James Paul, Robert and Charlie Brown; and four sisters, Josie Brown, Mandy Brown Norris, Marie and Laura Brown.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at 2 PM at Pilot Mountain Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Keith Woodie and Rev. Fred Vannoy. The family will receive friends Wednesday, one hour prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Greene Family Cemetery.

Burl E. Huff

Burl E. Huff, D. Oct. 14, 2012
Mr. Burl Ervin Huff, age 82, of Greensboro, NC, died peacefully Sunday morning, October 14th, 2012 at Whitestone, A Masonic and Eastern Star Community in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Huff was born March 13, 1930 in Ashe County to the late Dewey Talmage and Fannie Greer Huff. He was a long time Watauga County community member and business owner. He resided the past 14 years at Whitestone in Greensboro.

Mr. Huff was retired from a long history in the automobile industry in NC, including Huff Motors, Huff Ford Tractor, Huff Chrysler Plymouth and Mack Brown, Inc. A proud Mason, he dedicated 50 plus years to the Masonic Order as a member of Snow Lodge #363 in Boone, NC. He was also a founding member of Deerfield United Methodist Church in Boone. A friend to all, also known as “Papa Huff”, he was an avid harmonica and organ player. He never met a stranger or a dog he did not love, especially Bella, a Maltese at Whitestone.

Mr. Huff is survived by two daughters, Sarah Doty and husband, Joe Doty of Broken Arrow, OK; Donna Huff Naylor and husband, Dwayne Naylor of Newport News, VA, and one son, Gerald Huff and wife Jeannette of Boone, NC. He is also survived by four brothers, Earl T. Huff of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kyle C. Huff of Sparta, NC, George E. Huff of Morganton, NC and Jimmy D. Huff of North Wilkesboro, NC; and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Baker of Fleetwood, NC. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Vicki Wilcox of Springfield, VA; Doelan Wilcox and wife Terri of St. Louis, Missouri; Eric Huff and wife Jodi; and Todd Huff of Boone, NC, and Mackenzie Naylor and Zachary Naylor of Newport News, VA four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Huff, Bob Huff and Claude Huff; and one sister, Lillian Huff.

Funeral services for Burl E. Huff will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 16, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Burl Greer and Reverend Tommy Jones. Masonic graveside rites and burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Randall Cannon

Randel Clay Cannon, D. Oct. 11, 2012
Randel Clay Cannon, 79, of Boone, died Thursday evening, October 11, 2012 at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock. Born December 2, 1932 in Burke County, he was a son of the late Lawrence Fin and Mary Shuping Cannon. Randel was a graduate of Appalachian State University.

He taught elementary education in the Watauga County School system, including Green Valley, Valley Crucis and Hardin Park schools, and served as principal at Cove Creek Elementary School. Randel established the Extended Day Program at Watauga High School, and enjoyed spending his summers mowing and caring for the sports ball fields at schools in the County. Randel was a member of the Boone Advent Christian Church and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Cannon is survived by two daughters, Sarah Cannon Williams and husband Scott, of Todd, and Marcella Cannon Bradford and husband, Bob, of Boone; son, Douglas Cannon and wife, Maxie, of Chatsworth, Georgia; four grandchildren, Christina Cannon of Athens, Ga., Adam and Zac Baldwin and Eli Bradford, all of Boone; and one brother, Gerald Cannon and wife, Lena, of Hickory.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Main Cannon; two sisters, Marie Grady and Sue Smith; and five brothers, Curtis, Paul, Cecil, Preston and Ed Cannon.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, October 14, 2012, at 2 o’clock at Boone Advent Christian Church, officiated by Pastor Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 until 2 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Cemetery.

Frank W. Petersilie

Frank W. Petersilie, D. Oct. 5, 2012
Frank W. Petersilie,II age 72 of St. Augustine, Florida died Friday, October 5, 2012 in Melbourne, FL.

As a former resident of Boone, Mr. Petersilie was a Professor of Art at ASU prior to founding a furniture manufacturing company called “Spherical Furniture” and managed that for over 20 years. He was a former member of the Boone Rotary and started WXIT AM1200 radio. He moved to St. Augustine in 1999 where he continued working in real estate investing. Frank wintered in Florida but always came home to the mountains in summer.

Mr. Petersilie is survived by his wife of 24 years Beth Petersilie of the home; a sister Jackie Cook and her husband Ed of St. Augustine; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and many friends.

A memorial service for Mr. Frank Petersilie is scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations are requested to Bruce Shelton Memorial Scholarship Fund, 860 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
