Emma Jean B. Bougher, D. Nov. 27, 2012
Mrs. Emma Jean Brinker Bougher, age 95, of Boone and formerly of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away Tuesday morning, November 27, 2012 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation Center. A resident there for the past eight years, she was cared for with love and kindness. Jean was born June 4, 1917 in Greenburg, Pennsylvania. Most of her adult life was spent in Ft. Lauderdale with her husband of 57 years, Phillips Bougher. Her joys included family, friends, art, travel and her garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband Phillips and son Charles Sherman Bougher.

Survivors include one daughter; Joan Shirley and husband Robert of Blowing Rock, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

A celebration of the life of Emma Jean Brinker Bougher will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 4  o’clock at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. David G. Hatten, D. Nov. 26, 2012
David G. Hatten, age 74, of Statesville, a native and former resident of Blowing Rock, died Monday afternoon, November 26, 2012, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville.

Mr. Hatten was born October 5, 1938 in Watauga County, a son of the late Charles and Lena Greene Hatten. He was a retired security guard and served in the United States Army. Mr. Hatten was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Stony Point, North Carolina.

Mr. Hatten is survived by his wife, Lula Hicks Hatten of the home; one son, Mike Hatten and wife Peggy of Stony Point; one grandson, Chris Hatten of Stony Point, and one aunt, Dorothy Greene Norris of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Corien Coffey, and one brother, Milton Hatten.

Funeral services for David G. Hatten will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, November 28, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Max West. Masonic graveside and burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Roy Len Baird, D. Nov. 23, 2012
Roy Len Baird, age 50, of 1297 Highway 194 South, died Friday afternoon, November 23, 2012, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Roy was born October 29, 1962 in Watauga County, a son of Opal Johnson Baird and the late Howard H. Baird. He was a drywall contractor and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, Roy is survived by one son, Steven Baird of Boone; one sister, Becky Richardson and husband Don of Vilas; and two brothers, Kevin Baird and Michael Baird, both of Vilas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard H. Baird, and two brothers, Eddie and Randy Baird.

A memorial service for Roy Len Baird will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, November 28, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Delmar James.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service. At other times, friends may call at the home of his mother, Opal Baird, 1297 Highway 194 South, Vilas.

Rosa Lee Carlton Watson, D. Nov. 22, 2012
Rosa Lee Carlton Watson, age 81, of Deep Gap, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Mrs. Watson was born February 5, 1931 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Gaither and Lucy Robbins Carlton. She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Mrs. Watson is survived by one daughter, Nancy Ellen Watson of Deep Gap; one granddaughter, Karen Watson Norris of Deep Gap; one grandson, Richard Eddie Watson and wife Annette of Deep Gap; three great-granddaughters, Candis Amber Watson of Boone, Chelsea Michelle Norris of Blowing Rock, and Sarah Elizabeth Norris of Deep Gap; one great-grandson, Michael Channing Norris, II of Deep Gap; two great great-grandsons, Tanten Webb of Boone, and Brennon Kilgore of Blowing Rock; three sisters, Irene Lewis of Boone, Pearlee Shipley and husband Howard of Lenoir, and Marlene Marley and husband Charles of Ferguson, and one brother, Jay Carlton and wife Carrolyn of Boomer. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthel “Doc” Watson; one son Eddy Merle Watson; two brothers, Everette Alonzo Robbins, and Robert Vaughn Carlton, and one sister, Violet Hamby.

Funeral services for Rosa Lee Carlton Watson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 25, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Gary Watson and Reverend Sherrill Wellborn. Burial will follow in the Doc & Merle Watson Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. At other times friends may call at the home of the daughter Nancy Ellen Watson, 217 Sunny Hill Lane, Deep Gap. The family requests that anyone visiting not wear any scented body products.

Mrs. Sarah Frances McLaurin Forde, age 89, of Valle Crucis and a former resident of Laurinburg passed away Tuesday November 20, 2012 at home. Born February 6, 1923 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Morrison and Mary Liles McLaurin. Mrs. Forde was a retired bookkeeper and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg.

She is survived by her children; Mary Jo Forde of Valle Crucis, Ellen Humphries and husband Roger of Boiling Springs, NC, Nita Forde and Tom Dancer of Penland, and Buddy Forde of Laurinburg, two grandchildren; Matthew Humphries and wife Gillian of Shelby, and Jonathan Humphries of Banner Elk, two sisters; Jane Stanley of Asheville and Sue Jones of Laurinburg.

Memorial services for Mrs. Sarah Frances McLaurin Forde will be conducted Friday November 23 at 3 o’clock at the First Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg, NC. Bonnie Lunsford Ramsey, age 86, of 1030 Parallel Road, Banner Elk, died Tuesday evening, November 20, 2012, at her home.

Mrs. Ramsey is survived by four daughters, Rachel Ramsey of Banner Elk, Patricia Aldridge and husband Ronnie of Foscoe, Betty Sue Lafferty and husband Jerry of Lenoir, Frankie Needham and husband Martin of Banner Elk; a son Bynum Harold Ramsey and wife Rebecca of Hudson; two granddaughters, Sherry Aldridge of Winston Salem and Vicki Aldridge Townsend and husband Kent of West Jefferson; two grandsons, Eric Hill Ramsey and wife Stephanie and Keith Edward Aldridge all of West Jefferson; one sister, Edith Brandon of Morganton and one daughter-in-law, Daphne Bumgarner Ramsey of Boone. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Ramsey, one son, Johnny Ray Ramsey, a granddaughter, Regina Aldridge, her father and mother, Dayton and Viola Brewer Lunsford and one brother Ronald Lunsford.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Bonnie Lunsford Ramsey will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, November 23rd at Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tee Gatewood and Dr. John Wilson officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 until 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in Smith Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 PM at Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church, prior to the service. At other times friends may call at the Bonnie Ramsey home, 1030 Parallel Road, Banner Elk.

Leone Perry Hendershot, age 89, of Cardinal Lane, Boone, passed away Friday morning, November l6, 2012 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living. Born April 27, 1923 in Caseville, Michigan, she was a daughter of Ervin and Katherine Ostermiller Perry. Mrs. Hendershot was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane Butts and husband, Jeffrey, of Boone, and Susann Pumphrey and husband Gary, of Fairfax, Va.; two sons, David Hendershot and wife, Barb of Waterford, Michigan, and Mark Hendershot and wife, Sue, of White Lake, Michigan; her grandchildren, J. J. Butts and wife, Amy of Des Moines, Iowa, Aaron Butts of Chicago, Illinois, Adrienne Stumb and husband, Adam, of Jamestown, Chris and Tory Hendershot, both of White Lake, Michigan, Rudy Thomas of Charlotte, and Caitlin Thomas and husband, George Everett, of London, England; and two great-grandchildren, Charlie Stumb and Hanna Butts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Raymond Hendershot.

Memorial services for Leone Perry Hendershot will be conducted at a later date at Acacia Park Cemetery in South Field, Michigan.

Gladys Kirby Sullivan, D. Nov. 16, 2012
Gladys Kirby Sullivan, age 89, of Wood Lade Terrace, DeLand, Florida, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Friday, November 16, 2012, at Florida Hospital in DeLand.

Mrs. Sullivan was born November 11, 1923 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Filmore Kirby and Alice Davis Kirby. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastern Star in California.

Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her husband, Roy Sullivan of DeLand; one step-daughter, Mary “Robin” Taylor of California; one step-son, Bobby McVicker and wife Betty of California, and one sister, Jackie Oliver and husband Jim of Vilas. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one step-grandson, Ryan Taylor; one sister and six brothers.

Graveside services and burial for Gladys Kirby Sullivan will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 21, 2012, at 10:00 o’clock, at Mabel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend Vernon Eller.

Virginia Winebarger Proffitt Smith, D. Nov. 15, 2012
Virginia Winebarger Proffitt Smith, age 82, of 212 Milton Moretz Road, Boone, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Thursday morning, November 15, 2012.

Mrs. Smith was born June 29, 1930 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Chessie Miller Winebarger. She was an inspector at Shadowline, Inc., retiring after 32 years of service. Mrs. Smith was an active member of Meat Camp Assembly of God, and had a great love for her family and church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Elaine P. Greer and husband Troy, Kathy Taylor and husband Jimmy, and Irene Norris and husband Tony, her caregivers for the past three years, all of Boone; two sons, Joe Proffitt and wife Joyce, and Keith Proffitt and wife Lora, all of Boone; one sister, Betty Blevins of West Jefferson; two grandsons, Greg Greer and wife Abby, and Dylan Proffitt, all of Boone; three granddaughters, Sheri Farmer and husband Jackie, Toni Dishman and husband Ronnie, and Jennifer Proffitt, all of Boone; three great-grandsons, Brandon Farmer of Boone, Michael Dyer of Millers Creek, and Elijah Brown of Boone; her special friends, June Parks, Judy Hampton, Barbara Snyder, and Laurie Bura, and her special friends from Hospice, Anita Eller and Alberta Miller. She is also survived by six step-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Cless Proffitt, the father of her children; her second husband, Cecil Smith; one infant son, Dennis Ray Proffitt; one infant daughter, Lydia Ann Proffitt; one grandson, Gerald Wayne Huff, and three brothers, Glenn, John, and James Winebarger.

Funeral services for Virginia Winebarger Proffitt Smith will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 18, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Jerry Moretz, and Reverend Delmar James. A private burial will follow in Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Terry W. Rushin, D. Nov. 14, 2012
Mr. Terry Wayne Rushin, age 67, of Davant Extended Care Facility, Blowing Rock, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday November 14, 2012. Born June 18, 1945 in Greensboro, NC, he was a son of the late Ben and Zelma Sexton Rushin. Terry was a graduate of Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington, NC and UNC Chapel Hill.
Terry made a home in Chickasha Oklahoma but travelled the world as an oil rig engineer or “roustabout”, the more appropriate term as his life was filled with adventures. He suffered a stroke in China which left him totally paralyzed, almost totally mute for the last decade. He nonetheless endured his life with a heroism & humanism that won him the love & respect of his many caregivers and old friends.

He is survived by two brothers; Donald James Rushin and Ben Rushin.

Kenneth “Oss” Greer, D. Nov. 14, 2012
Kenneth “Oss” Greer, age 59, of 193 Brown Hollow Road, Creston, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Greer was born May 8, 1953 in Ashe County, a son of the late Frank W. Greer and Docia Shelton Greer. He was the retired owner and operator of Greer Paving Company, and was a member of Sutherland Baptist Church.

Mr. Greer is survived by his wife, Denise Parlier Greer of the home; one daughter, Michelle Greer and husband David Miller of Creston; two sons, Shawn Isaacs and wife Amy of Mountain City, and James “Jay” Stanley of Creston; two granddaughters, Carissa and Leah; three grandsons, Keith, Jamie, and Gavin (known to his grandfather as “Doodle”); ten sisters, Virginia Potter, Thelma Brown, Pauline McMahan, Shirley Burleson, Marynell Johnson and husband Junior, Elenora Burleson, Jo Evelyn Cornette, Wanda Ann Roark, Linda Arnold and husband Bill, and Brenda Church and husband Scott, and two brothers, Charles Thomas Greer and wife Sue, and Howard Greer and wife Jessie. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Richard Greer, and four brothers, Glen, Roby, Robert, and Raymond Greer.

Funeral services for Kenneth “Oss” Greer will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 17, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Sutherland Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Keith Edmisten. Burial will follow in Sutherland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 193 Brown Hollow Road, Creston.

Magdalene Lambrus Muller, D. Nov. 12, 2012
Magdalene Lambrus Muller, age 96, of Appalachian Brian Estates, Boone, died Monday evening, November 12, 2012, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

Mrs. Muller is survived by two sons, Harry Muller and wife Penny of the Bethel Community, and Adolph “Bud” Muller and wife Lanae of Union, Illinois. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Muller, Jr.; one son, Evert Muller; her father and mother, Michael John Lambrus and Amy Alma Phillips Lambrus, and one half-brother, Harry Slater.

A private memorial service for Magdalene Lambrus Muller will be conducted, at a later date, at Bethel Baptist Church.
