Gary Ervin Potter, D. May 5, 2012
Mr. Gary Ervin Potter, age 50, of Pottertown Road, Todd, passed away Saturday morning, May 5, 2012 at home. Born July 9, 1961 in Wilmington, Delaware he was a son of the late John Denver and Elizabeth Gordon Potter. Gary attended Elk Knob Baptist Church. He was a former employee of New River Building Supply. Gary was retired from the National Guard, and had served actively in Operation Desert Storm.
He is survived by his wife; Beth Townsend Potter; two daughters; Jeanette Potter and Cassie Trivette and husband Jake of Todd, one son; Gary Potter of Todd, six grandchildren; Wayne, Bobby Abigail, Steven, Tristen, and Heather; one sister; Ruth Potter of Hickory, three brothers; Wayne Potter and wife Rita of Deep Gap, Larry Potter and wife Laura of Creston, and Jerome Potter of Boone. He was preceded in death by his parents; John Denver and Elizabeth Gordon Potter.
Memorial services for Mr. Gary Potter will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Faith Baptist Church, 507 State Farm Road, Boone, NC. Officiating will be Rev. Sonny Younce and Rev. J. C. Greene. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 130. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1o’clock until 2 o’clock at Faith Baptist Church. Mozell F. Miller

Mozell Fouts Miller, D. May 5, 2012
Mozell Fouts Miller, 73, of Highway 194 North, Boone, died Saturday morning, May 5, 2012 at her home. Born July 4, 1938 in Sylva, North Carolina, she was a daughter of Moses Charles and Lola Callie Lucker Fouts. Mrs. Miller was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. She was employed for a time at Blue Ridge Shoe, but her love in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.
Mrs. Miller is survived by two daughters, Tina Marie Miller of Boone and Carolyn Booth of Danville, Va.; granddaughter, Tabatha Michelle Price of Boone; and four sisters, Ruby Thompson and Nina Peak, both of Danville, Va., Flora Turner of Greenville, SC, and Lenora Wood of Abilene, Texas. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Miller, parents, and three brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon, May 7, 2012, at 1 o’clock at the Hopewell Community Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Edwin McKinney. Elaine Shaw Williams

Elaine Shaw Williams, D. May 3, 2012
Mrs. Elaine Shaw Kirk Williams, age 86, passed peacefully from this life Thursday, May 3, 2012 on her 43rd wedding anniversary to Carl Williams.
She was a faithful, loving servant of God, who embraced her faith with quiet humility and grace. She taught her children through example that faithfully serving God, no matter what life brings, is the most important thing we can do. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
Born in Lexington, NC to the late Larkin and Annie Shaw, she attended Appalachian State Teachers College and married John Z. Kirk,Jr., also of Lexington. They had four children, John Thomas, Sandra, Steven and Lori. Elaine worked at the music library at Appalachian and lived in Boone for many years. A few years following the death of her first husband, she met Carl at the Boone United Methodist Church, married and moved to Rutherfordton NC, where she taught elementary school.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, John Z. Kirk, Jr, sons Steven Paul and John Thomas “Tommy” Kirk, step mother Kathleen Shaw and her second husband Carl C. Williams.
Surviving are her daughters Sandra Kirk of Wilmington, Lori Key and husband Dana of Greensboro and step-children, Carl E Williams and wife Susan, Jim Williams and wife Charlene, Christy Davis and husband Artie, Louis Williams and wife Patty. She also is survived by 15 grandchildren, Steven, Patrick and Katie Walker, Ben and John Robertson, Brad Williams, Elana, Josh and Solen Williams, Emerson, Anders and Liza Davis, Reece Williams, and Rijn and Daryl Key.
A celebration of Elaine’s life will be conducted Thursday morning, May 10, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone, NC. The body will lie in state in the chapel from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, where the family will receive friends. Officiating will be Pastor Brian Cornell. A private burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
A very special thanks to The Davis Community and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their loving care of Elaine and support of the family in her final days. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Hospice in her memory.

Barbara Jean Watson Stewart, D. May 3, 2012
Barbara Jean Watson Stewart, age 72, of 683 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, died Thursday morning, May 3, 2012, at her home.
Barbara was born February 2, 1940 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Ira Levi Watson and Ruby Fern Watson. She was a retired employee of Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir, and a member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Dallas “Bill” Stewart of the home; three sons, Jim Watson and wife Audrey, Doug Watson and wife Liz, and Pastor Andy Watson and wife Lisa, all of Deep Gap; two step-daughters, Elaine Carlton of Hickory, and Angelina Canter of Lenoir; three sisters, Ruth Widner and husband Clarence of Lenoir, Janice Miller and husband Stanley of Deep Gap, and Joyce Scarberry and husband Larry of Granite Falls, and five brothers, Wayne Watson and wife Nellie, and Claude Watson and wife Betty, all of Lenoir, Roy Watson and wife Faye of Fleetwood, David Watson, and Marty Watson and wife Christine, all of Deep Gap; eight grandchildren, Asa Watson and wife Alexia of Todd, Dustin Watson and wife Veronica of Lenoir, Jeremy Watson and wife Ashley of Banner Elk, Levi Watson and wife Lauren, Aaron Watson, Caleb Watson, Luke Watson, and Benjamin Watson, all of Deep Gap, and five step-grandchildren, Nichole Calhoun, Lewis Wayne Mitchell, Danielle Craig, Ashley Stewart, Sarah Stewart. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, eleven step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, A.F. Watson, and one sister, Lindy Watson.
Funeral services for Barbara Jean Watson Stewart will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2012, at 3:00 o’clock, at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Eric Proffit, Pastor Andy Watson, and Mr. Jim Watson. Burial will follow in the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home of a son, Jim Watson, 653 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, North Carolina.

William Howard Davis

William Howard Davis, D. May 3, 2012
Mr. William Howard Davis, age 82, of 1010 Slabtown Road, Zionville, died Thursday morning, May 3, 2012, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Davis was born February 19, 1930 in Watauga County, a son of the late Thomas Smith Davis and Florence Eggers Davis. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army, serving for 23 years.
Mr. Davis is survived by one sister, Anna Mae Shook of Zionville; two nieces, Kathy Crowder of Mountain City, and Debby Saulmon and husband Larry of Morganton, and one nephew, Thomas Keith “Sonny” Taylor of Zionville. He is also survived by three great-nieces, three great-nephews, and seven great great-nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie V. Davis, and one nephew, Mike Taylor.
Funeral services for Mr. William Howard Davis will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 5, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Carl Johnson and Reverend James Henson. Military graveside rites and burial will follow in Zionville Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Davis residence, in Zionville.
