Mary Elizabeth Greer Henson, D. March 7, 2012

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Greer Henson, age 86, of Deerfield Road, Boone, died Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mary was born April 6, 1925 inWataugaCounty, a daughter of the late Horace and Reta Mae Pennell Greer. She was a graduate from Appalachian State Teachers College, with a Degree in Education, and from Virginia Tech, with a Master’s Degree.

Mary was a retired school teacher who taught for 20 years at Cove Creek High School, Blowing Rock High School, and thenWataugaHigh School, until she retired in 1966. She and her husband were charter and founding members ofDeerfieldUnitedMethodistChurch, and lifetime members there.

A lifelong democrat, Mary served on the Boone Town Council and on various committees in Boone. She was appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to serve two terms, from 1978-1985, on the USS North Carolina Battleship Commission inWilmington.

Mary was a beloved mother and grandmother, who will be truly missed.

Mrs. Henson is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Henson Carter and husband Joe of Vilas; a beloved granddaughter, Kristen Carter of Vilas; three special cousins, Lenoir Critcher and husband Truman of Boone, Ilene Bruce and husband Albert of Farmington, Washington, and Willard Pennell of Spokane, Washington, and one brother-in-law, Doug Henson and wife Glenda of Gainesville, Florida. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Council Henson; her father and mother, Horace and Reta Mae Pennell Greer; one sister, Eva Neal Greer; an infant brother, Horace Franklin Greer, and an infant sister, Reta Kay Greer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Greer Henson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, atDeerfieldUnitedMethodistChurch. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Burl Greer, Reverend James McKinney, and Reverend Evelyn M. Lemons. Burial will follow inMountLawnMemorial Parkand Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Thomas B. “Tom” Cook, D. March 8, 2012

Thomas B. “Tom” Cook, age 78, of 1512 Silverstone Road, Zionville, went home to be with his Heavenly Father, Thursday morning, March 8, 2012.

Mr. Cook was born January 27, 1934 inWataugaCounty, a son of the late Boyd and Lura Cook.

Tom was a dedicated servant of God. He served as a deacon for over 45 years atPleasantGroveBaptistChurch. He had a love for music and served as music leader for many years also. He loved the people in his church and always wanted what was best for everyone. He had a servant’s heart.

Tom’s grandchildren were the light of his life! He spent many hours “spoiling” them every chance he got. They all loved their “Papaw” too. He has left a great void in their lives as well as the lives of all who knew him.

Tom worked at IRC for over 30 years as a mechanic.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma Vines Cook of the home; one daughter, Ann Cook Thomas and husband Dwight of Zionville; two grandsons, Garrett Thomas and Spencer Thomas of Zionville; two granddaughters, Brittany Fox of Deep Gap, and Shannon Fox of Raleigh; one son-in-law, Wendell Fox of Deep Gap; two sisters, Sara Cook Reece of Hudson, and Judy Lawrence and husband Frank of Trade, Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Swift and Rebecca Tester and husband Dewey, all of Boone, and two brothers-in-law, Clint Vines of Lenoir, and Dean Vines and wife Twilla Driver of Newport News, Virginia. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Cook Fox; his father and mother-in-law, Roy and Mamie Vines, and by four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

Funeral services for Thomas B. “Tom” Cook will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 10, 2012, at 3:00 o’clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Steve Leashomb, Reverend Herbert McCoy, and Reverend Allan Perry. Military graveside rites and burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, provided by American Legion Post 130.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home,1512 Silverstone Road, Zionville.

Richard “Rick” John Borhman, D. March 10, 2012

Richard “Rick” John Borhman, age 63, of Hunting Hills Lane, Boone, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at his home.

Rick is survived by his wife, Jean Borhman; one son, Colton Lenz, and one daughter, Alaina Walker.

A Celebration of Life memorial service for Richard “Rick” John Borhman will be held Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2012, from 2:00 until 4:00 PM, at the Jones House in Boone. The Celebration will feature Rick’s favorite foods and music, and give everone an opportunity to share thoughts, feelings, and “Rick” stories with each other.

James Monroe “Jim” Cole, D. March 12, 2012

James Monroe “Jim” Cole, age 89, a former resident of Boone, died Monday morning, March 12, 2012 at LifeCareCenterin Banner Elk. Born April 2, 1922 in Leflore County, Mississippi, he was a son of Richard Monroe and Ruby Knott Cole. Jim was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church, where he served for more than 20 years as choir director. Mr. Cole was a retired professor for Appalachian State University’s Department of Education. Mr. Cole served in the 40th District of the North Carolina State House of Representatives. He served in the U.S. Army and the Army Air Corp during WWII.
    Surviving are four sons, Richard ‘Dick’ Cole and wife Sharon of Gastonia, James Kevin ‘Jimmy’ Cole of Watauga Lake, TN., Michael Christopher Cole and wife Deborah, of High Point, and Thomas Sidney “Sid” Cole and wife Elizabeth, of Roxboro; and three daughters, Susan Heyward Cole of Hampstead, Jennifer Anne Cole of Boone, and Kathryn ‘Kelly’ Cole-Cornett of Boone. Ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. 
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Cole, and one sister, May Clark. 
    Memorial services for James Monroe ‘Jim’ Cole will be conducted Wednesday evening, March 14, 2012, at 6 o’clock at the Deerfield United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Evelyn Lemons. The family will receive friends following services at the church. Burial with military graveside honors will be at a later date in the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Mrs. Mary B. Wellborn, age 93, of Deep Gap, died Saturday morning, March 10, 2012, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Mrs. Wellborn was born November 11, 1918 inAsheCounty, a daughter of the late John W. Bledsoe and Margie Moretz Bledsoe. She was a homemaker and a member ofCalvaryUnitedMethodistChurch.

Mrs. Wellborn is survived by three sisters, Mildred Williams ofPortland,Oregon, Clara Fletcher ofWest Jefferson, and Betty Graham and husband Wilbur of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and one brother, Rhonda Bledsoe and wife Linda of Maggie Valley, North Carolina. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Will N. Wellborn; two sisters, Lucille Greer, and Joann Alexander, and three brothers, John,Clyde, and Earl Bledsoe.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary B. Wellborn will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 12, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Brian Cornell. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Parkand Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Maggie Keller McMahan, D. March 11, 2012

Maggie Keller McMahan, age 91, ofRoe Keller Drive, Boone, died Sunday, March 11, 2012.

Mrs. McMahan was born October 15, 1920 inWataugaCounty, a daughter of the late Roe and Addie Hodge Keller. She was a retired employee of IRC/TRW in Boone.

Mrs. McMahan is survived by one son, David McMahan and wife Judy of Morganton; one grandson, Travis McMahan and wife Angel of Lenoir; one great-granddaughter, Machae McMahan of Lenoir, and two nieces, Frances Keller, and Margaret Keller, both of Lenoir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn McMahan, and one brother, Frank Keller.

Funeral services for Maggie Keller McMahan will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, March 13, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend T.J. Jackson. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Parkand Gardens.
