Hazel Baker Carroll, age 96, of Boone, passed away Sunday morning, March 9, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Carroll was born February 6, 1918 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Fields Clarence Baker and Ella Greene Baker. She was a full-time mother and housewife and a member of Bethelview United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carroll was a faithful member of the choir, member of the United Methodist Women, and served as the church financial secretary for many years. Her favorite pastime activity was to embroider pillowcases that she gave as gifts to her family and friends. She was quick to declare her love with this poem: “I love you once. I love you twice. I love you next to Jesus Christ.”

Mrs. Carroll is survived by two daughters, Betty Carroll Miller and husband Homer of Lenoir, and Judy Carroll Hollers and husband Kyle of Boone; two sons, Dale Carroll and wife Betty, and Larry G. Carroll and wife Janice, all of Boone; eleven grandchildren, Eddie Keller and wife Deborah, Tommy Keller and wife Maryann, David Keller and wife Donna, Terry Keller Heffren and husband John, Gregory Miller and wife Kelly, Kathy Miller Whittington, Cynthia Miller White and husband Bruce, Libby Carroll Golds and husband Mike, Debby Carroll Cook and husband Tim, LeAnne Carroll Hilderbrand and husband Mark, and Larry G. Carroll, II and wife Maegan; two brothers, Fields Baker and wife Gladys, and Lester Baker and wife Lucille, all of Lenoir, and one sister, Barbara Baker Wilkey and husband Joe of Granite Falls. She is also survived by a number of great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Franklin Carroll; one daughter, Anna Lea Carroll Keller and son-in-law, Charles E. Keller; one grandson, Homer Miller, Jr.; a grandson-in-law, John Whittington, and four brothers, Cecil Baker, Bronce Baker, Junior Baker, and Ernest “Bud” Baker.

Funeral services for Hazel Baker Carroll will be conducted Wednesday morning, March 12, 2014, at 11:00 o’clock, at Bethelview United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Elaine Hall and Reverend Dennis Spivey. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Mrs. Alma Greer Hatton, age 61, of North Street, Boone, passed away Saturday night, March 8, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center. Born May 9, 1952 in Watauga County she was the daughter of the late Winston Greer and Ruth Whittington Greer. Alma was a compassionate and caring nurse at Watauga Hospital for many years. She was a member of High Country Bible Fellowship. Her battle with cancer opened up so many doors of opportunity to share the Gospel to countless people in the community. 

In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband, Rev. Morris Hatton, three children; Charles Hatton of Boone, Pamela Johnson and husband Mark of Fayetteville, and Chad Hatton of Harrisonburg, VA, two grandchildren, Faith Hatton and Isaiah Patton of Fayetteville, and one nephew, Miles Greer of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her father, Winston Greer and two brothers, Chris and Virgil Greer.

A service to celebrate the life of Alma Greer Hatton will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Reggie Hunt. Burial will follow in the Clarissa Hill Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Seby B. Jones Cancer Center Emergency Fund, PO Box 2570, Boone, NC 28607.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Cora Wilcox Winebarger, age 86, of 1957 Meat Camp Road, Boone, passed away Friday evening, March 7, 2014, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Winebarger was a former employee of IRC of Boone and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mrs. Winebarger is survived by her husband, James Burl Winebarger of Boone, a daughter, Sarah Doty and husband Joe of Broken Arrow, OK, a son, Gerald Huff and wife Jeannette of Boone, three granddaughters, Vicki Wilcox of St. Simons Island, GA, Tammy Wilson and husband Gary, and Becky Treadway all of Todd, four grandsons, Eric Huff and wife Jodie of Elk Park, Todd Huff and wife Amanda of Deep Gap, Jerry Wilcox and wife Pam of Todd, and Doelan Wilcox and wife Terri of St. Louis, MO, twelve great-granchildren, one great-great-granchild, three sisters, Minnie Davis of Boone, Geneva Ashley of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Juanita Holman of Lenoir, and one brother, O’dell Wilcox of Gastonia, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death bv her parents, Claude Wilcox and Maggie Phillips Wilcox, and a son, Thomas Wilcox.

Graveside services for Cora Wilcox Winebarger will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 10, 2014 at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Garden Mausoleum. Officiating will be Dr. Sonny Younce and Revered Delmar James. Entombment will follow in the Mount Lawn Mausoleum.

Benjamin Franklin “Benny” Austin, Jr., age 70, of 1262 Kaylor Drive, Granite Falls, a native and former resident of Boone, passed away Friday evening, March 7, 2014, at Valdese General Hospital.

Mr. Austin was a retired bookkeeper for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and a member of Mount View Baptist Church in Caldwell County.

Mr. Austin is survived by one sister, Glenda Austin Smith and brother-in-law Gerald of Taylor, SC, one nephew, Edward Austin Smith and wife Jeannie of North Augusta, SC, one niece, Angela Smith Lucas and husband Greg of Easley, SC, one great-nephew, Austin Smith of North Augusta, SC and two great-nieces, Gracie Smith of North Augusta, SC and Caroline Lucas of Easley, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Austin, Sr., and Alice Greene Austin.

Funeral services for “Benny” Austin will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 10, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Herbert McCoy. Burial will follow in the Winkler’s Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Ruby Trivette, D. March 7, 2014

Ms. Ruby Adams Trivette, age 99, of NC 194 North, Todd, passed away Friday afternoon, March 7, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center. Born November 27, 1914 in Ashe county, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Monroe and Celia Adams Trivette. Ruby was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and a retired teacher.

She is survived by two nephews, Larry Trivette of Todd, and Gary Trivette of Charlotte, four nieces, Joyce Benson, Sharon Murphy and Barbara Gibbs of Raleigh, and Betty Cave of Myrtle Beach, SC, and two sisters in law, Grace Trivette of Boone and Jean Roach of Lansing. 

Funeral services for Ms. Ruby Adams Trivette will conducted Saturday afternoon March 22 at 3 o’clock at South Fork Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Homer Murdock, Rev. Herbert McCoy and Rev. David Cooper. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 until 3 o’clock at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Howell Cemetery Fund, in care of Larry Trivette, 10550 Hwy 194 North, Todd, NC 28684. Wendell Adam Church, 81, of Byrd Street, Boone, the Foscoe community, passed away Thursday, March 6th, 2014, at his home. Born December 4, 1932 in Foscoe, he was a son of Charlie Spencer and Etta Gragg Church. Wendell was a member of Foscoe Christian Church. He retired after more than 45 years from Hound Ears Golf Course Maintenance, and served for 25 years with the Foscoe Fire Department. Wendell loved baseball, played for more than 30 years in county leagues, and was an avid deer hunter and trout fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Marbeth Calloway Church; sons, Phillip Church and wife, Delores, Barney Church and Neal Church, all of Boone; grandchildren, Adam, Anna and Jordan Church, all of Boone, and Piper Church of Princeton, Mo; and his great-grandson, Ely Gale Farmer of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death four brothers, Charlie, Jack, George, and twin, Finley Church; and two sisters, O.V. Porch and Exie Church. 

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 9th, 2014, at 3 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastors Dan Burks and Charles Hindman. 

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 3 PM, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial will follow in the Calloway Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Foscoe Christian Church, 8834 NC Hwy l05 S., Boone, NC. 28607.

Maxine E. Ross, age 72, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, entered into rest Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

A native of Boone, NC she was the daughter of the late James Marvin and Bina Potter. Maxine was a member of Living Hope Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She loved the Lord and served him well while here on earth.

Maxine is survived by her husband, Tom Ross; three daughters, Theresa Mooneyhan and husband Sam of Sanford, North Carolina, Tonda B. Kitchen and husband David of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Trina B. Lehman of Clarksville, Tennessee; one son, Trey Ross and wife Dawn of Frisco, Texas; three sisters, Eulene Head, Sue Butler and husband Jack and Peggy Ellis and husband Larry; nine grandchildren, Jason Kitchen, Nicole Gibson, Aaron Mooneyhan, Taliea Kitchen, Ashlee Mooneyhan, Eddie Dean Lehman, Cody Lehman, Conner Ross and Cameron Ross, and three great grandchildren, Gracie Mooneyhan, Kinlee Kitchen and Marlie Mooneyhan.

She is preceded in death by her two brothers, Jimmy and Jerry Potter; one sister, Roxanne Robinson, and a son-in-law, Joe Eddie Lehman.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 7, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at J. C. Kirby & Son, Lovers Lane Chapel with burial to follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, KY.

Visitation will begin Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.

Arrangements entrusted to J. C. Kirby & Son, Lovers Lane Chapel.
