Jackie Ward

Jackie Ward, D. June 19, 2012
Jackie Ward, age 69, of 560 Dayton Trail, Vilas, died Tuesday afternoon, June 19, 2012, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Jackie is survived by his wife, Bettina Ward of the home; two daughters, Robin Ward of Vilas, and Tracy Greene and husband Charlie of Sugar Grove; two sons, Greg Ward and wife Paula, and Kevin Ward and wife Jamie, all of Vilas; seven granddaughters, Casey Coffey and husband Sheldon, Halee Hartley, Addie Hartley, Allyson Hartley, Laramie Ward, Sydney Ward, and Elizabeth Ward; four grandsons, Ryan Hartley and wife Traci, Kennon Hartley, Tyler Ward, and Lawson Greene; one great-granddaughter, Tessa Hartley, one great-grandson, Finley Coffey; one sister, Willrea Trivette and husband Dexter of Sugar Grove, and one brother, W.D. Ward, Jr. and wife Nadine of Vilas.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Dayton Ward, Sr. and Elsie Clay Ward; one sister, Betty Lou Johnson, and one brother, James Ward.

Funeral services for Jackie Ward will be conducted Friday morning, June 22, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Brushy Fork Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Toby Oliver and Reverend Max West. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Ned Henson

Walter Ned Henson, D. June 18, 2012
Mr. Walter Ned Henson, age 84, of Bethel Road, Vilas, died Monday morning, June 18, 2012. He was born June 24, 1927 in a log home on the Fork Branch Road, Beaver Dam, Watauga County, North Carolina, Henson homestead to the late Arthur Donley and Berta Lee Henson.

Ned Henson played baseball and basketball at Bethel High School, and broke horses as part of the family farm. He also cradled oats as a boy. Mr. Henson moved his family to Burton, Ohio in 1953. He worked for the TRW Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio for thirty three years as a master machinist. He was active with the Burton, Ohio Masonic Lodge and volunteered for many civic, school and charity organizations in Burton, Ohio. Ned and his wife (Velma) moved to the family farm at the bottom of Georges Gap, Bethel, North Carolina in 1987. He enjoyed farming and became a member of the Forest Grove Baptist Church. Ned Henson became an integral part of the Bethel, Beaver Dam and Forest Grove Communities; enjoyed gardening and helping others.

He is survived by two sons; Bynum Ned Henson and wife Shirley of Brookville, Indiana, and Bill Edward Henson and wife Susan of Chardon, Ohio, three grandchildren; Emily Henson of Chardon, Ohio, Bynum Henson and wife Darcy of Fishers, Indiana, and Heidi Stamer and husband Soeren of San Francisco, California; five great grandchildren; Caroline Henson, Charles Henson and William Henson of Fishers, Indiana, Finn Stamer and Inga Stamer of San Francisco, California. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Mary Velma (Eggers) Henson. A special thank goes to and Ruth and Paul Braswell for all their help.

Funeral services for Mr. Walter Ned Henson will be conducted Friday morning at 10 o’clock at Forest Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Thomas Brown. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forest Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 7:30 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Pearl Phillips Mast

Pearl Phillips Mast, D. June 17, 2012
Pearl Phillips Mast, age 101, of Spice Creek Road, Banner Elk, died Sunday morning, June 17, 2012, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Mast was born June 11, 1911 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Ella Mae Potter Phillips Ward. She was a homemaker and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mast is survived by one daughter, Okelee Taylor of Wilkesboro; two grandsons, Rodney Taylor of Wilkesboro and Donnie Mast and wife Juanita of Gold Hill, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Tammy Paz of Wilkesboro and Sherry Lylerly and her husband Chuck of Gold Hill, and one sister, Irene Heffner of Florida. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, eight great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Mast; one daughter, Ersel Chloe Mast; one son, Donald Mast; one grandson, Monroe Taylor; one brother, John Phillips, and three sisters, Bonnie Cannon, Ola Mae Thompson, and Pauline Johnson.

Funeral services for Pearl Phillips Mast will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 21, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Richard Trivette. Burial will follow in the Mast Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Ruby M. Harmon

Ruby Mae Harmon, D. June 17, 2012
Mrs. Ruby Mae Harmon, age 76, of Trivette Circle, Sugar Grove, passed away Sunday morning, June 17, 2012 at home. Born February 1, 1936 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Graydon and Pearl Smitherman Harmon. Ruby was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church. She was a seamstress and a former employee of Shadowline.

She is survived by one daughter; Patricia Withers and husband Robert of Kannapolis, one son; Cliff Harmon and wife Melissa of Banner Elk, her former husband Clifford Dallas Harmon of Sugar Grove, eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, three sisters; Glenda Trivett and husband Will and Mary Johnson all of Sugar Grove, and Wilma Harmon of Boone. She was preceded in death by her parents; Graydon and Pearl Smitherman Harmon, two brothers; Carroll and Stacy Harmon, one sister; Gala Harmon and one grandson; Jason Treadway.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Mae Harmon will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Andy Lunceford. Arnold C. Presnell, D. June 16, 2012
Mr. Arnold Coolidge Presnell, age 87, of Bryant Combs Road, Sugar Grove, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 16, 2012 after a battle against mesothelioma. Born August 9, 1924 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Roby and Ida Tester Presnell. Mr. Presnell was a faithful member of Zion Hill Baptist Church which he attended most of his life. He was retired from ASU. Arnold was a US Army Veteran having served during WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Presnell of 64 years, of the home, two daughters,
Wanda Combs and husband Terry, Kathy Oakes and husband Rick, both of Sugar
Grove; two grandsons, Laramie Combs and wife Angela, and Dallas Oakes and wife
Jessie; all of Sugar Grove, a special great granddaughter Natalie Combs – “The
Apple of his eye.” He is also survived by one brother, James Ottie Presnell of High
Point; two brother-in-laws, Hillard Ward and wife Linda of Sugar Grove, Jimmy Ballew
of Winston-Salem, a sister-in-law Carolyn McGuire of Boone, and many nieces and
nephews. He is survived by many life-long and faithful friends.

Arnold lived a quiet life of faith and found much contentment and enjoyment in his family and friends. He loved his church family also. He and Marie loved gardening and produced a bountiful garden each year. He enjoyed watching the Braves on TV. He was privileged to be a part of the group of WWII veterans that left from Boone last year to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington, DC to see the WWII memorials. This was a highlight of his life.

Funeral services for Arnold Collidge Presnell will be conducted Wednesday, June 20,
2012, at 2 o’clock at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Herbert McCoy and Rev. Mike McElhaney.The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock.

Military graveside rites provided by the American Legion Post 130 will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Nelson Greer

Nelson Greer, D. June 15, 2012
Mr. L. Nelson Greer, Jr., age 68, of Moore Mountain Road, Vilas, passed away Friday afternoon June 15, 2012 at home after a lengthy battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born January 23, 1944 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Willie Jane Greer. Mr. Greer was a US Navy Veteran having served on the USS Perkins and was a retired business owner. Nelson was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Watauga Aero-Modelers, and a Tin Can Sailor. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, woodworking and model airplanes.

He is survived by his wife; Teresa Rhymer Greer, one son; Michael Greer and wife Tammi of Vilas, one daughter; Melissa Blocker and husband Jeremy of Boone, a special niece; Jennifer Pastusic of Vilas, three grandchildren; Tiffani Burr, Ivy Greer and Jace Blocker, three sisters; Betty Wood and husband Leroy of Boone, Louise Moretz of Boone, and Joyce Carlton and husband Grady of Fleetwood, two brothers; Loye Greer and wife Peggy of Boone and Troy Greer and wife Elaine of Boone, his mother in law; Faye Rhymer of Deep Gap. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother Bill Greer.

Funeral services for Mr. Nelson Greer will be conducted Monday evening at 6 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Gary Lawrence and Tim Moretz. Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 130 will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Dillon Luther Critcher

Dillon Luther Critcher, D. June 14, 2012
Dillion Luther Critcher, age 16, of 2434 Deerfield Road, Boone, died Thursday evening, June 14, 2012.

Dillion was born February 19, 1996 in Watauga County, a son of Danny and Lynne Williams Critcher. He was a rising Junior at Watauga High School. Dillion was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where he was very active in mission work and his youth group. He was a participant in sports throughout his life. Dillion played baseball, basketball, and football. Sports was not his only achievement in life; academics came first. He obtained perfect attendance in grades K-8. Dillion was an outgoing, compassionate, fun loving friend to everyone he met.

In addition to his parents, Dillion is survived by his brother and best friend, Zack Critcher, of the home; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Griffin Williams of Boone; his paternal grandparents, Harry and Wanda Critcher of Boone; his aunts and uncles, Randy Critcher and wife Debra, Jeff Jordan and wife Sandy, all of Boone, and Greg Williams and wife Gwynne of Acworth, Georgia, and five first cousins, Cody Critcher, Ethan Critcher, and Madi Critcher, all of Boone, Conner Williams and Gunner Williams, both of Acworth, Georgia.

A celebration of Dillion’s life will be conducted Monday afternoon, June 18, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, and following the service. Officiating will be Reverend Bud Russell and Reverend Jason Powers. Private graveside services and burial will follow.

The family will receive friends Monday, following the service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 2434 Deerfield Road, Boone.
