Douglas Edwards

Douglas A. Edwards, D. June 12, 2012
Douglas Arthur Edwards, 67, of Vanderpool Road, Vilas, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at his home, where his beloved wife, Sandra Basel, and many friends and relatives had helped him through his brief battle with cancer.

Doug owned DAE-COR Builders and most recently was associated with Cornerstone Construction in Foscoe. He loved music, and animals, but had a special place in his heart for Rufus, his Black Jack donkey. Doug was an ardent baseball fan and follow most games of his favorite team, the Oakland A’s.

After his diagnosis with a brain tumor in March, Doug became an inspiration to those who know him be keeping his keen sense of humor and generous spirit.

Doug was born April 26, 1945, in Merced, California. Her served in the Navy and then graduated from San Francisco State University with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. He moved to Watauga County in 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Carble of Monte Vista, California, and one sister, Doris. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three brothers, ken and his wife Linda of San Jose, California; John and his wife Deborah of Scotia, New York, and David of Fremont, California; one sister, Claudia Stefani of Santa Cruz, California, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at the Vanderpool Baptist Church in the Vanderpool Community Friday, June 15, 2012 at 6 PM. Pastor Andy Watson will officiate with the assistance of Doug’s brother, Pastor John Edwards, and Brent Price.

The family would like to thank the employees of the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center and Medi-Home Hospice for their fine care. Randy T. Watson, D. June 9, 2012
Randy Turner Watson, age 49, of Brownwood Road, Deep Gap, died Saturday morning, June 9, 2012, at his home. Randy was born December 4, 1962 in Watauga County to Virginia Miller Watson and the late Allie T. Watson. Before becoming disabled, he worked as cattleman. He was of the Baptist faith.

Randy is survived by his wife, Kimberly Swift Watson; two sons, Thomas Cody Watson and Kristin Willy, of Boone and Tylar Chase Watson of the home; his granddaughter, Amber Nichole Watson of Boone; his mother, Virginia Miller Watson of Deep Gap; one sister, Betty Watson of Deep Gap; two brothers, Wayne Watson and Jane Chandler of Lenoir and David Watson and Vickie of Deep Gap; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Swift of Deep Gap.

Jennie W. Hollars, D. June 9, 2012
Mrs. Jennie Wellborn Hollars, age 92, of Mt. Pleasant Road, Wilkesboro and a former resident of Boone, passed away Saturday morning, June 9, 2012 at home. Born February 15, 1920 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late John Sherman and Nancy Greene Wellborn.

Jennie was a homemaker and attended Shady Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro.

She is survived by her grandson; Craig Hollars, Jr., and wife Jennifer of Wilkesboro, one half sister; Carolyn Austin of Boone, one step sister; Bonita Stewart of Wilkesboro , one step brother; Hershel Greene and wife Imogene of Boone., three great grandsons, and one great great granddaughter, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Jones Hollars, two sons, Frank Hollars and Craig Hollars, one sister; Norma Parker, and four brothers; Newland, Russell, Edward and Johnson Wellborn.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Wellborn Hollars will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Tom Moore and Rev. Sherrill Wellborn. Burial will follow in the Hollars Cemetery at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the service from 2 o’clock until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Virgil L. Day, D. June 8, 2012
Virgil L. Day, age 97, of George Hayes Road, Boone, died Friday afternoon, June 8, 2012, at Blowing Rock Hospital. Mr. Day was born December 20, 1914 in Watauga County. He was the son of the late Millard Winfield Day and Nancy Isabella Coffey Day.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Grace Day Walker, one son, John Edward Day, a son-in-law, Leslie Walker, two sisters, Eulah Day Greene, and Annie Day, three brothers, Leon, Raymond and Gordon Day.

Mr. Day is survived by his wife, Pearl Storie Day, of the home, one daughter, Faye Day, of Boone, three grandsons, John E. “Jack” Day, Jr., and wife Cindy of Lenoir, Charles M. Day and wife Ginger, of Boone, Andrew Day and wife Lesley of Cary, seven great-grandsons, John C. Day, of Germany, Dillion Day, of Boone, Landon Day, of Boone, Jared Roberts, Crescent City, IL, Jake Day, of Cary, Ethan Cassavaugh and Kelsey Cassavaugh both of Lenoir, two great granddaughters, Stefanie Day of Germany, and Griffin Day of Cary, he is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Virgil L. Day will be conducted Monday, June 11, 2012 at 11:00 O’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 at the chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Harold Hayes. Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Peyton E. Townsend, D. June 8, 2012
Ms. Peyton Elizabeth Townsend, age 4, of Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, ran into her Heavenly Fathers arms Friday evening, June 8, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center. She blessed her family by entering the world on October 31, 2007 in Watauga County. She is the daughter of Randall and Sarah King Townsend. Peyton enjoyed bright colors, Barbie dolls, picking flowers, painting her nails, dressing up, playing with her sister who was also her best friend, drinking special coffee with Mam-Mam, singing and praising Jesus- whether in the car or at church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister; Lilly Grace Townsend; her maternal grandparents; Wayne and Carol King of Boone, her paternal grandparents; Homer and Geri Townsend of Boone, her aunts and uncles; David King and wife Melissa of Boone, Rebecca Woolard and husband Gary and their children; Blakely and Macyn of Boone, Gerald Townsend and wife Crystal and their children; Dustin, Drew, Silas and Seth of Banner Elk. Michelle Curd and husband Rick and their children; Ryan and Donnie of Mountain City, her paternal great-grandmother; Lillie Townsend, and a special uncle and aunt Hubert and Frankie Townsend of Boone and their children; “Aunt Paula” Townsend, Melinda and Trevor Farmer. She is also survived by an amazing support system of aunts, uncles, “aunt and uncle cousins” as well as a multitude of special friends.

Funeral services for Peyton (“Pey-Pey”) Elizabeth Townsend will be conducted Monday evening at 6 o’clock at the First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be Rev. Rusty Guenther and Rev. Rhonda Gailes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lilly Grace Townsend Educational Fund, in care of State Employees Credit Union, 1470 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, NC 28607. Graveside services and burial will be private.

Howard Ervin Young

Howard Ervin Young, D. June 7, 2012
Howard Ervin Young, age 95, of George’s Gap Road, Vilas, NC, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.

Howard was born March 10, 1917 in Wadsworth, Ohio to the late Ervin and Bertha Young. He was educated in the Wadsworth public schools, graduated from Wittenberg University in 1939 and earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1941. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a supply corps officer. After the war, he returned to Wadsworth and worked his whole career for the Morton Salt Company in various management positions, ending his career in the Chicago, Illinois, area. He retired in 1977 and then moved to the High Country of North Carolina.

Since retiring to the High Country he has been an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, singing in the choir and serving on various committees of the congregation. He was on the board of Resort Area Ministries. He has also been active in the Appalachian Institute for Senior Scholars.

He is survived by a son, Eric Young of Downers Grove, Illinois, a daughter, Cinda Williamson and husband Allan of Banner Elk; grandsons David Young and wife Sheryl, and Christopher Young and his partner Cheri Johnson, and great-grandson Ryan Young, all of Lombard, Illinois. He is also survived by a sister, Marian Bradley of Black Mountain, North Carolina, a number of nieces and nephews, and his loving and dedicated caregiver, Michelle Henson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 48 years, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Young, successive wives Sarah Miller Young and Kaky Hill Young, and a sister Marjorie Young Close.

A memorial service celebrating Howard’s life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Saturday afternoon, June 16th, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Derek Boggs. Interment will be at a later date in Akron, Ohio.

The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Grace Lutheran Church/Grace Builders Fund, 115 E. King Street, Boone, NC 28607 would be greatly appreciated.

Frances Delores “Shorty” McGuire, D. June 7, 2012
Frances Delores “Shorty” McGuire, age 82, went home to be with her Lord, Thursday, June 7, 2012.

“Shorty” was born July 6, 1929 in Banner Elk, the daughter of the late Ada Belle Wilson and Roby Oscar McGuire. She was retired from the former Volvo-White Trucking in Greensboro. She also was a member of First Christian Church in Kernersville.

Mrs. McGuire is survived by her son, Larry G. McGuire of Texas; grandson Sean McGuire of Texas; her loving niece and caregiver Rheba Lowry of Cleveland, Ohio; great niece Julie Lukjan; great nephews Stephan Lowry, and Michael Lowry; great-great niece Kiera Lukjan, and great-great nephews Stephan Lowry, and Collin Lowry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Jewell J. Moody.

Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held Tuesday morning, June 12, 2012, at 11:00o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Zionville.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 3:00 until 5:00 o’clock at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville, and Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at the Hampton Funeral Service.

Eban Gray Carter, D. June 7, 2012
Eban Gray Carter, age 48, of Seely Road, Boone, died Thursday evening, June 7, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.

Eban was born May 28, 1964 in Mecklenburg County, a son of The Reverend Charles Carter and Janice Wood Carter. He was a Chef at Knights On Main in Blowing Rock, and a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, Eban is survived by his wife, Laura Zellers Carter; one son, August Gray Carter; one daughter, Elizabeth Grace Carter, all of the home; one sister, Sami Price of High Point; one nephew, Carter Price of Greensboro, and one niece, Carrie Price of Greensboro.

A memorial service for Eban Gray Carter will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 12, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be The Reverend Charles Carter and The Reverend Dr. Lynn Stall. Committal services will be conducted at the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church Columbarium in High Point.

The family will receive friends, at the church, following the memorial service.

Bryon Keith Waters, age 43, of Mabel School Road, Zionville, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 7, 2012 at his home.

Bryon was born December 31, 1968 in Hamilton, Ohio and is the son of Clifford and Joyce Waters of Boone.

He is survived by one son, Caleb Waters of Camp Lejeune; three daughters, Bryna Waters of Chapel Hill, Elena Waters of Claremont and Talia Rominger of Creston; one brother, Rusty Waters and wife Cathy, and one sister, Cindy Penick and husband, Stewart, all of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening, June 10, 2012, from 6 until 8 o’clock at the Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. Graveside services will be private.

Alonzo Moretz, age 84, 175 Banjo Hollow Road, Boone, died Wednesday morning, June 6, 2012, at the home of a son, Carroll and Betty Moretz.

Alonzo was born June 10, 1927 in Watauga County, a son of the late Albert Dwight Moretz and Beulah Grace Proffitt Moretz.

Mr. Moretz is survived by one daughter, Violet Winebarger and husband Steve of Boone; three sons, Carroll Moretz and wife Betty, Harold Moretz, and Ted Moretz, all of Boone; one sister, Edith Michael and husband David of Cameron, North Carolina; one half-sister, Rosa Lea Canter of Todd, and two half-brothers, Wallace Isenhour and Dana Isenhour, both of Hudson. He is also survived by a six grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Elizabeth Moretz; two brothers, William Dean Moretz and Denver Glen Moretz; one grandson, Claude Moretz, and one great-grandson, Nathan Nelson.

Funeral services for Alonzo Moretz will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 9, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Jerry Moretz. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Elise “Fidget” Foster Mauney, age 92, of 8109 Jamison Place Court in Charlotte, formally of 925 East Park Drive in Lincolnton, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

Mrs. Mauney was born February 12, 1920 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late James M. Foster and Mary Greene Foster. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Elise Mauney Harkey and husband Ted of Midland, North Carolina, and Nancy Lee Mauney Diebold and husband John of Charlotte; one sister, Janice Muriel Foster of Blowing Rock; two grandchildren, Angie Capri Harkey Hastings and Christine Renee’ Murphy McKinney; and five great-grandchildren, Brittany Elise McKinney, Matthew Alan Hastings, Kassie Capri Hastings, Stephanie Marie McKinney, and Michael David Hastings. She is also survived by five nieces, Tonya Poplin, Kara Metts, Isabella Metts, Betty Baker and husband Bill and Sue Moore and husband Floyd.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Howard Mauney, Jr.

A graveside for Elise “Fidget” Foster Mauney will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 7, 2012, at 1:00 o’clock, at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be Reverend Kenny Newberry. Entombment will follow.

Dollie Smith Shirley, D. June 4, 2012
Dollie Smith Shirley, age 85, of Deep Gap, died Monday, June 4, 2012, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.

Dollie was born November 3, 1926 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Robert William Smith and Clancie Miller Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Wanda Simmons of Lenoir; two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Smith and wife Lesa, and John Smith and wife Hollie, all of Deep Gap; and a special caregiver Frankie Simmons. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Greenville Anderson Shirley; three sisters, Beulah Cook, Hazel Smith, and Stella Smith, and four brothers, Vaughn, Earl, Darrell, and Luther Smith.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dollie Smith Shirley will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 7, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mountain View Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Revered Mike Barfoot, Reverend Frank Dixon, and Reverend Roy Smith. Burial will follow in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cosby Cornett

Cosby C. Cornett, D. June 4, 2012
Mrs. Cosby Campbell Cornett, age 90, of Boone, North Carolina, passed away June 4, 2012, at Glenbridge Healthcare Facility. Born November 14, 1921, Cosby was a lifelong resident of Watauga County. She was the daughter of the late Reverend Charles and Cleo Campbell of Ashe County. Affectionately known as “Nannybug” or “Granny”, she loved working in her garden, politics, hats, impossibly high heels, Duke Basketball, NASCAR and yard sales. But mostly she loved her family.

Stricken by a stroke and bedbound for eleven years, Cosby faced every challenge with grace and patience. Although she lost the ability to speak, she never lost her sense of humor or her ability to laugh at herself. She truly embodied her favorite saying that “the only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude.”

Cosby was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years; Russell Aaron Cornett, Sr., two brothers and four sisters, and her grandson Scott McDee Cornett. She is survived by her brother Duncan Campbell and wife, Mildred, of Newton, AL, four children: R.A. Cornett, Jr. and wife, Brenda of Vilas, N.C; Marvella Baker and husband, Bob, of Boone, N.C.; Denver Cornett of Boone, N.C.; and, Sherry Lindquist and husband, Kurt, of Charlotte N.C., fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 7, at Piney Grove Cemetery on Poplar Grove Road. Officiating will be Rev. Gordon Noble. The funeral procession will leave Austin and Barnes funeral home located at 194 Queen Street, Boone, NC at 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

Deborah Tabor, D. June 3, 2012
Mrs. Deborah Mae Galbreath Tabor, age 70, Boone, passed away Sunday evening at Glenbridge Health Care & Rehabilitation. Born July 3, 1941 in Ft. Worth, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Harold Galbreath and Margaret Elizabeth McKinney Galbreath Witt. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, Deborah had lived in the Boone area for nearly 20 years and was retired from Watauga Medical Center.

She is survived by two daughters; Cynthia Miles of Georgia and Rebecca Savallish of Arizona. She had seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband MSgt Garrett L. Tabor, USMC Ret.

A Celebration of Life service for Deborah will be held Friday, June 8, 2012 at Price Park at 1 o’clock. Mrs. Hollars was born June 4, 1913 in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Anthony David Bolick and Dovie Ann Bolick. She was a homemaker, avid gardener, and a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Lenoir.

Mrs. Hollars is survived by one son, Lewis E. Hollars, Sr. and wife Shirley of Lenoir; three grandsons, Reverend Lewis E. Hollars, Jr. and wife Lisa of Collettsville, Christopher Hollars and wife Sabrina, and David Shoemake and wife Amber, all of Lenoir, and two granddaughters, Sharon Hollars Bolick and husband Tim of Lenoir, and Brenda Johnson of Bethlehem, North Carolina. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hardy Webster Hollars; two daughters, Ollie Mae Hollars and Lou Ellen Shoemake, and twelve brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Emmie Bolick Hollars will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 5, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Bailey’s Camp Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Lewis E. Hollars, Jr. and Reverend Gary Gragg. Burial will follow in Harmon’s Chapel Cemetery in Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Chris Hollars, David Shoemake, Payton Bolick, Tim Bolick, Dale Bolick, and Logan Carlton.

Doris Love Hodges, age 80, of Tacoma, Washington, died Friday, June l, 2012.

Doris was born May 26, 1932 to Coy and Gladys Love and grew up in Vilas.

She is survived by her loving husband, Stan; three sons, Greg and wife Sarah, Keith and wife, Debby, and Richard and wife, Michelle, all of Tacoma, Washington; one brother, Jim Love and wife, Kathryn, of Blowing Rock; two sisters, Ruth Henson and Jim Burgess, of Blowing Rock, and Jean Perry and husband, Ned, of Millers Creek. Eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Howard; and three sisters, Myrtle Moody, Virginia Yates and Una Fields.

Memorial services for Doris Love Hodges will be conducted Tuesday, June 12th, at Mountain View Valley Chapel in Tacoma, Washington.
