Betty Miller

Mrs. Betty McNeil “Granny” Miller, age 71, of Howards Creek Road, the Rich Mountain Community, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 30, 2012 at home. Born October 7, 1940 in Watauga County she was the daughter of the late James and Verlee Ragan McNeil. Mrs. Miller was a faithful member of Rich Mountain Baptist Church. Affectionately known as “Granny” throughout the community, she was a farmer; raising vegetables, cabbage and tobacco for many years. She loved working outside; her church; her community; but mostly she loved her family.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years; Dan Miller, one daughter; Mary Jane Norris and husband Bobby, one son; Danny Miller and wife Kenda, four grandchildren; Neko Worley and husband Chuck, Danielle Bledsoe and husband Joey, Kendra Hayes and husband Chris, and Robby Norris and wife Skylar all of Boone; seven great grandchildren; Michael Worley and wife Jessie, Brad Worley and wife Nicole, Graham Bledsoe, Abbei Bledsoe, Kylea Bledsoe, Madason Hayes and Makenlea Hayes, three great great grandchildren; Ava Worley, Brooke Worley and Bristol Worley all of Boone; and one brother; Jimmy McNeil and wife Thelma of Morristown, Tennessee, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Betty McNeil “Granny” Miller will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Rich Mountain Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock. Officiating will be Rev. Harold Danner and Rev. Vernon Eller. Burial will follow in the Jim McNeil Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 o’clock until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Martha Guy Jones

Martha Guy Jones, D. May 29, 2012
Martha Guy Jones, 93, of Russ Norris Road, Elk Park, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday evening, May 29, 2012 at Davant Extended Care in Blowing Rock.
Martha, born February 16, 1919, was a life-long resident of Avery County, in the Old Beech Mountain Community. She was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church where she worshipped God and faithfully attended until she become ill in March.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed being a homemaker in the real meaning of the word. She loved to work in her vegetable and flower gardens, cooking for her family, and for anyone else who came by. Her special dish was Cherry Yum-Yum, a treat her grandsons will always remember. Martha was always sharing jams, jellies, canned vegetables and items from her garden with everyone. Her favorite saying, “You only have what you give away”.
Martha was famous for her hand-made quilts that were donated to any fun-raiser needing a raffle prize. In her early years, she made hooked rugs that were sold for added income. Later, she hooked rugs as a hobby just to create useful and beautiful things.
She loved flowers, both spring and summer colors. Anyone who wishes to wear bright colors to the funeral in celebration of her New Life, please feel to do so.
Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Maxine Trivette of Sugar Grove, and Earline Brown and husband, Junior, of Boone; four sons, Maloy Jones and wife, Judy, of Williamsburg, VA., Wayne Jones and wife, Mabel, of Taylorsville, Melvin Jones and wife, Regina, of Old Beech Mountain, and Elmer Jones and wife, Sheri, of Sugar Grove; eleven grandchildren, Michael Trivette and wife, Sharon, of Colorado Springs, CO, Angela Hicks and husband, Floyd, of Sugar Grove, Al Trivette and wife, Deborah, of Charleston, SC, Randy Townsend of Boone, Melissa DeLeon and husband, Charles, of Fairfax, VA, Kimberly Burke and husband, Charlie, of West Bloomfield, MI, Jeff Jones and wife, Michelle, of Leesburg, VA, Brian Jones and wife, Abby, of Charlotte, Kevin Jones and wife Carol, of Waynesboro, VA, Jill Hogan and husband, Trey, of Charlotte, and Jennifer Lawrence and husband, Daniel, of Sugar Grove; eighteen great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren; one brother, George Guy and wife, Mary Lou, of Statesville; one sister, Edlee Guy of Newland; three sisters-in-law, Annis Hagaman of Sugar Grove, Jean Jones and Margie Jones, both of Taylorsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Jones; parents, Jimmie and Rona Guy; brothers, Gurnie, Hobert and Robert Guy; and sisters, Virgie Cable and Myrtle South.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 2, 2012, at 2 PM at Flat Springs Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Quincy Norris and Rev. Bryan Miller. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock. Burial will follow at Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes. At others times, friends may call at her home.

Mr. Eric S. Kaczmarczyk, D. May 29, 2012
Mr. Eric Shane Kaczmarczyk, age 22, of Sawmillers Way, Banner Elk, the Foscoe Community passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center. Born May 24, 1990 in Watauga County he was a son of Robert and Lisa Taylor Kaczmarczyk. Eric was a member of the Foscoe Christian Church and the Foscoe Fire Department. He was a first responder and an avid hunter and fisherman.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife; Ashley Kaczmarczyk, two daughters; Taylor and Olivia Kaczmarczyk all of Foscoe, one sister; Brandi Kaczmarczyk and fiancé’ Marvin Dickens of Smithfield, NC, his maternal grandmother; Sally Taylor of Foscoe, his paternal grandfather; Pete Shew of Hudson, his mother in law; Amy Miller of Boone, one aunt; Linda Denny and husband Buck, and his God parents; Jeff and Diane Wilcox of Boone.
Memorial services for Mr. Eric Shane Kaczmarczyk will be conducted Friday evening at 7 o’clock at the Foscoe Christian Church. Officiating will be Minister Dan Burks. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4 o’clock until 7 o’clock. At other times friends may call at the residence of Robert & Lisa Kaczmarczyk, 354 Stella Taylor Road, Boone. The family respectfully requests no flowers and suggests memorials to the Taylor and Olivia Kaczmarczyk Fund, in care of High Country Bank, 211 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, NC 28607.

Pauline H. Hughes

Pauline H. Hughes, D. May 27, 2012
Mrs. Pauline H. Hughes, age 85, of Roaring Creek Road, Newland, passed away Sunday evening, May 27, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital. Born December 19, 1926 in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Hazel Oaks Hughes. Pauline was a member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was active in her community, having worked at Burleson’s General Store and volunteering to work the election polls. At age 50 Pauline graduated from Nursing School and became a Registered Nurse. She worked for Cannon Memorial Hospital for 14 years. She enjoyed gardening and serving others; both at work and at home.
She is survived by her children; Donna J. Hughes of Newland, Chris R. Hughes and wife Tonia of Elizabethton, and Larry D. Hughes and wife Dianne of Punta Gorda, Florida; five grandchildren; Roan C. Ellis and wife Megan, Laurel H. Wilson and husband Thomas, Amber D. Hughes, Misty E. Calhoun and husband Wesley, Christopher M. Hughes and wife Sandra, six grandchildren; Peyton and Rhett Wilson, Anna and Jonathan Calhoun, Jack and Leah Hughes, two sisters; Sandra Guinn and husband Jerry of Elk Park and Wander carpenter and husband James of Canton, Ohio, and one brother; Clyde Hughes of Newland. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death her husband George J. Hughes, and infant son; George Hughes, Jr., one daughter; Pam Elder and one son; Keith Hughes, and two brothers; Charles Curtis Hughes and Michael Hughes.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline H. Hughes will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock at the Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Hughes and Rev. Jody Almond. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mayland Community College Nursing Scholarship, 200 Mayland Lane, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

Daisy Walker

Mrs. Daisy W. Walker, D. May 25, 2012
Daisy Wellborn Walker, 93, of US 421 North, Boone, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center. Daisy Alice Wellborn was born June 6, 1918 in Watauga County, to Robert and Clemmie Watson Wellborn. Mrs. Walker owned and operated Walkers Jewelry Store in Boone for more than 47 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Walker of Boone, and fiancé, Jerry Reynolds; two sons, Charlie Walker and wife Lois, and Buck Wellborn and wife Judy, all of Boone; two grandsons, Robert Walker and wife, Melanie, and Gregory Walker; three granddaughters, Erika Walker, Stacie Walker and Jacqueline Walker Aldridge and husband, Loren; and two great-grandchildren, Shaylyn and Haydyn Walker; sister, Mildred Michael of Peachtree City, Ga.; and three brothers, Charles Wellborn and wife, Mary Lou, and Junior Wellborn and Sue, all of Boone, and Bill Wellborn and wife, Tommie, of Deep Gap. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Linney; one son, William; one sister, Sarah Graybeal; and four brothers, Allen, Arthur, Jim and Paul Wellborn.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 28, 2012, at 2 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. John Bollinger and Rev. Laura Weant. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jeanette Harmon

Jeanette H. Small, D. May 24, 2012
Jeanette Lynn Harmon Small, age 49, of Dotson Lane, Mountain City, went to be with her Lord on May 24, 2012, due to a vehicle accident. She was a wonderful mother, daughter and friend. All who knew Jeanette loved her. She will be missed, and her love will never be forgotten.
Ms. Small was employed for 10 years at the Merita Bread Store in Boone and for the past 2 years was employed as a food service cashier at ASU.
She is survived by two sons, Christopher and Nikaulas Small, and her mother, Shirley LaGow, all of Banner Elk; sister, Anita Luttrell and husband, Gary, one niece, Kristi Luttrell, two nephews, Robert and Tommy Luttrell and one great-niece, Kacey Heisler, all of Anchorage, Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Shasta Small; her father, Stacey Harmon; stepfather, Ed LaGow; maternal grandparents, Dean and Rita Hicks; and her paternal grandparents, Gradon and Pearl Harmon.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 28,, 2012, at 6 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 27th from 4 until 6 PM at Austin & Barnes. At other times, the family will be at the home of her mother, Shirley LaGow, 1172 Kellersville Road, Banner Elk.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, May 29th at 10 AM at the Harmon Cemetery.

Rachel Ford

Mrs. Rachel Ford, May 22, 2012
Mrs. Rachel Herman Ford, age 89, of Bamboo Road, danced her way into Heaven Tuesday evening May 22, 2012 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living. Born April 4, 1923 in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Elijah and Effie Idella Crouch Herman. Mrs. Ford was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone and was a retired beautician. Rachel was full of life and loved to sing and dance and brought joy everywhere she went.
She is survived by her children, Larry Ford and wife Linda of Raleigh, Rita Ford Yates of Deep Gap, Tim Ford of Boone, and Penny Ford Hicks and husband Norman of Vilas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Faylah Yates, Laura Ford Thomas, Sarah Ford White, Emily Ford Yoon, Dustin Hicks and Allison Hicks; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Moose of Taylorsville, and Joanna McCarroll of Mobile, Alabama; one brother, L. E. Herman of Taylorsville and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Jennings of Taylorsville. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Blaine Ford; one sister, Helen White; one brother, William R. Herman; three half brothers, Lee Jennings, Garfield Jennings and Ray Jennings; and one son-in-law, Michael Yates.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ford will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, May 29th at 2 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday prior to the service from 1 until 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Gordon Noble and Rev. Delmar James. Burial will follow in the Ford Family Cemetery in Aho. At other times friends may call at the home of Penny and Norman Hicks; 1357 Vanderpool Road, Vilas, NC 28692.

Gertrude Storie ‘Smitty’ Richards, age 68, of Mustard Field Road, Boone, died Sunday evening, May 20, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Born March 12, 1944 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Stanford and Gertrude Norris Storie. Mrs. Richards was a member of the Boone Advent Christian Church. She retired from IRC-TRW in Boone.
Smitty is survived by four sons, Barry Allen Richards and wife Lynn, of Reidsville; Wakeley Scott Richards of Bardstown, Ky., John Lane Richards of Sophia, and Toby Dean Richards of Boone; three sisters, Tudy Pearson of Boone, Libby Sharp and husband, Ron, of Sevierville, Tn., and Marty LaFrance and husband, Dan, of Boone; brother, Richard Storie of Huntsville, Alabama; six grandchildren, Savannah and Jordan Richards, both of Reidsville, and Charlie Richards of Boone, and Marique, Cameron and Jacob Richards, all of Largo, Fla.; and two great grandchildren, Tanya and Timmy Richards, both of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Richards, two brothers, Bart and Buddy Storie, and her parents.
Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, afternoon, May 23, 2012, at 2 o’clock at Boone Advent Christian Church, officiated by Pastor Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at the church.

Mrs. Barbara Cole Adams, age 75, of Adams Road, Vilas, passed away Friday morning May 18, 2012 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born February 13, 1937 in Watauga County she was a daughter of the late Wiley and Lena Houck Cole. Barbara was a member of Willowdale Baptist Church. She was a retired accounting manager with TRW/IRC.
She is survived by one son; David Adams and one daughter; Josie Adams both of Vilas; two brothers; Clarence Cole and wife Catherine of Boone and Everette Cole and wife Jean of Vilas, two sisters in law; Christine Cole of Boone and Joanne Cole of Lewisville, and a special friend Mary Ann Kirby of Boone. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; David Adams, two brothers; Clyde and Bill Cole.
Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Cole Adams will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Willowdale Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Eugene Braswell and Rev. Kenneth Bryant. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 12:30 until 2 o’clock. The family respectfully requests no food.
