Archie Edward Pennell, D. July 6, 2012
Mr. Archie Edward Pennell, age 86, of Ed Williams Road, Zionville, died Friday, July 6, 2012.

Born October 26, 1925, he was saved at a young age and he is now home with the Lord. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and brother. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Edward and Emma Pennell, two brothers Earnest and Dean Pennell and two grandsons, Jamie Pennell and Mark Pennell.

He is survived by Irene Pennell; his wife of more than 60 years; two sons, A. J. Pennell and Jerry Pennell and wife Jane of Zionville, grandson Jerry Lee Pennell, Jr. and wife Mandy and two great-grandsons Mark & Matthew Pennell all of Zionville and by two sisters Della Lawrence of Lenoir and Margie Isaacs of Zionville. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was known for his kindness, gentle spirit and his generosity. He will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing that we will see our precious “paw” again one day, in Heaven.

Funeral services for Archie Edward Pennell will be conducted Monday, July 9th at 1:00 PM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Officiatng will be Brother Jerry Lee Pennell, Rev. Derek Wilson and Rev. Dan Little. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 8th from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Dr. H. Max Smith

Dr. H. Max Smith, D. July 6, 2012
Dr. H. Max Smith, age 80, of West Jefferson and a former resident of Boone, passed away Friday morning, July 6, 2012 at Margate Health Care in West Jefferson.

Born August 24, 1931 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, he was a son of the late Charles Lee and Daisy Viola McDonald Smith. Max was a retired professor of music at Appalachian State University. He worked at ASU for twenty-five years. While at ASU Dr. Smith developed and was the first director of the University Honors Program. He served as chair of the school of music for four years. Max was an accomplished concert organist and has performed in twenty-six states and five European countries. He was an organist at various churches in the area, including First Baptist Church in Boone and Mt. Jefferson Baptist Church in West Jefferson. He also played at churches in Marion, Winston-Salem and Blowing Rock.

He is survived by one son; Pablo Pacheco and wife Marta of West Jefferson, two grandchildren; Bianca Marí Pacheco and Max Eduardo Pacheco both of West Jefferson, one sister; Kathleen Driskel of Cherryvale, Kansas, and one brother; Thomas Smith of Topeka, Kansas and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services for Dr. H. Max Smith will be conducted Saturday morning July 14th at 11:00 at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. Dr. C. Howard Dorgan

Dr. C Howard Dorgan, D. July 5, 2012
Dr. C. Howard Dorgan passed away Thursday, July 5 in his home in Boone, North Carolina.

Born in Ruston, Louisiana, Dr. Dorgan received a B.A.degree in speech and theater (the University of Texas-El Paso), a M.F.A.degree in theater (the University of Texas-Austin), and a Ph.D. in speech communication (Louisiana State University). He joined the Appalachian State University (ASU) faculty in 1971, remaining with the Department of Communication until his retirement in 2000.

During his time at ASU, he studied Southern rhetoric, later pursuing research in Appalachian religious studies. A prolific writer and esteemed scholar, Dr. Dorgan authored fifty journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. His thoughtful writings about Central Appalachian Baptist communities resulted in numerous books and awards, including the 1993 Thomas Wolfe Literary Award for his book “Airwaves of Zion.” A beloved teacher and respected faculty member, he received the 1993 College of Fine and Applied Arts Outstanding Faculty Award.

Dr. Dorgan also served as president of Appalachian Studies Association, president of Southern States Communication Association, and editor of “Southern Communication Journal.”

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, retired teacher, and his children, Shawn and Kelly.

Lynn Greene

Lynn Greene, D. July 3, 2012
Mr. Lynn Greene, age 65, of Flat Springs Road, Elk Park, died Tuesday evening, July 3, 2012, at his home. Born January 7, 1947 in Avery County, Lynn was a son of Ted Sherman and Maude Greene. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam Era and was a retired carpenter. His favorite pastime included fishing, duck hunting, and gardening.

Lynn was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Graveside services with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #130 will be conducted Monday morning, July 9th, 2012, at 11 o’clock at the Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Bryan Miller.

Henry Taylor, D. July 2, 2012
Mr. Henry Dale Taylor, age 69, of Russ Norris Road, Elk Park, passed away Monday July 2, 2012 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Born August 12, 1942 in Watauga County he was a son of the late Greek and Mina McGuire Taylor. Dale was retired from AT & T where he worked as a lineman. He was a US Air Force Veteran.

He is survived by his son; Allen Taylor and wife Amy of Elk Park, two granddaughters; Kelsey Taylor and Lily Mae Taylor of Elk Park, two brothers; John Taylor and wife Betty of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Paul Taylor of Vilas, and one sister; Iva Lois Miller and husband Bernard of Fleetwood. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers; Jack and Earl Taylor.

Funeral services for Mr. Henry Dale Taylor will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Claude Suddreth. Burial will follow in the Greene Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 o’clock until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Ryan David

Major Ryan David, D. July 1, 2012
Major Ryan Scott David age 35, of Boone passed away Sunday July 1, in South Dakota while serving his country. He was one of the four crew members who perished on the MAFFS #7 C-130 fighting the White Draw Fire near Edgemont, South Dakota.

He was born April 3, 1977 in Bellevue, Nebraska. Major David was an experienced highly decorated navigator and a member of the NC National Guard 145th Air Lift Wing based in Charlotte. Prior to joining the Guard, he had over 10 years of active duty experience in the US Air Force and served on multiple deployments to Southwest Asia. He was also employed by USIS in Winchester, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife; Jenny Ellerbe, one son; Robert (Rob) Scott Ellerbe David, their dog; Kayleigh, his father; Daniel So David and wife; Flor of Chevy Chase, Maryland, his mother; Rina Swank David-Claytor of Silver Spring, Maryland and her husband; W. Richard, three brothers; Bradley “B. J.” David and Paul David of Silver Spring, Maryland, and JDee David of Chevy Chase, Maryland, two sisters; Reyna Claytor and Richelle “Rica” Claytor of Silver Spring, Maryland, his mother and father-in-law; Robert and Scotty Ellerbe “Dad & Mom” of Boone, a brother-in-law; Hames Ellerbe “Bro” of Hood River, Oregon, his maternal grandfather; Charles Swank of Bellevue, Nebraska, his paternal grandmother; Ambrosia David of Hyattsville, Maryland, his cherished military family, and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and many beloved friends.

Funeral services for Major Ryan Scott David will take place on Saturday, July 14 at 2pm at the Appalachian State University Holmes Convocation Center with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, NC. He will be buried with full military honors.
