Mr. Johnny A. Proffitt, age 82, of 272 Smith Isaacs Road, Zionville, passed away Sunday morning, January 26, 2014, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Mr. Proffitt was born June 19, 1931 in Watauga County, a son of the late Charles Proffitt, Sr., and Thelma Osborne Proffitt. He was a retired paving machine operator for Brown Brothers Construction.

Mr. Proffitt is survived by one daughter, Susie Isaacs and husband Mike of Zionville; one son, Joe Proffitt of Zionville and his friend Rhonda Thompson of Hendersonville; two grandsons, Brad Isaacs and wife Sara of Zionville, and Chad Isaacs and wife Sarah of Vilas; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Jada Isaacs; two brothers, Bill Proffitt of Spruce Pine, NC and Jimmy Proffitt of Olar, SC, and one sister, Susie Wheeler of Mountain City, TN. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, and a good friend, Ray Powers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Ray, and four brothers, Robert, Glenn, Benjamin and Charles Proffitt, Jr.

Funeral services for Johnny A. Proffitt will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, January 28, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at Henson’s Chapel United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 until 2:00. Officiating will be Reverend Derick Wilson and Reverend Frank Johnson. Burial with full military honors, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in the Henson’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Henson’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Fred Henson, 4231 Old US Highway 421, Zionville, NC 28698.

Fred Robinette Jr., D. Jan. 25, 2014

Mr. Fred Turner Robinette, Jr., 69, of Bermuda Run, and formerly of Boone, died peacefully on January 25, 2014, after a very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Statesville, on August 12, 1944, to the late Fred Turner and Dorothy Gaither Robinette, Sr. Fred was a graduate of Statesville High School and Appalachian State University, where he earned BS, MA, and CAS degrees in Education. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. After spending four years as a teacher and administrator at elementary schools in Winston-Salem and Morganton, he returned to Appalachian State University to become the Director of Alumni Affairs.

His career at Appalachian was a distinguished one. He founded the Yosef Club, the Ambassadors Program, the Annual Fund, the Alumni Travel Program, the local Alumni Chapters, and was the first constituency based fundraiser, serving the college of business. He led many successful fundraising campaigns across campus and retired as the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.

Upon his retirement from ASU, Fred served as a fundraising and public relations consultant to several charity and non-profit organizations in northwest North Carolina and then later became the Senior Director of Alumni Development at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. In September 2013, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Alumni Association of the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Fred was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a former member of Boone United Methodist Church.

Always a proud member of the Appalachian family, Fred enjoyed serving the Boone community for many years. He was an avid golfer, a loyal supporter of Appalachian Football, and an especially devoted husband, father, and “Poppy” to his three grandchildren. Fred is survived by his wife of 45 years, Priscilla Swaim Robinette; two daughters, Emily Robinette Harpe and husband Slayton of Advance and Sally Robinette Anglin and husband Andrew of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren: Kathryn and Meredith Harpe and Benjamin Anglin. Also surviving are his sister, Dottie Robinette Smith, and niece Mollie Smith of Statesville, and a brother-in-law, Joseph Swaim of Advance. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church auditorium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fred T. and Priscilla S. The Robinette family wishes to express its heartfelt appreciation to his oncology team at the Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center: Angela Alistar, MD, Amy Cameron, PA-C, and Amy Neal, RN as well as his Hospice nurse Lisa Ivester, RN, and his caregiver, Christian Churchill. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is serving the Robinette family.

Pauline Winebarger Bryan, D. Jan. 23, 2014

Pauline Winebarger BryanPauline Winebarger Bryan, age 83, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Mrs. Bryan was born April 4, 1930, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Frank Winebarger and Lois Miller Winebarger. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. In her earlier years, she worked at the Dime Store in Boone and Trailway Dry Cleaners in Boone.

Pauline is survived by a son, Daniel Bryan and daughter, Janice Baxter, and husband Tim Baxter, all of Boone. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Lee Proffit, a number of nieces and nephews, and her Glenbridge family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Bryan.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline Winebarger Bryan will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 26, 2014, at 2:00 pm at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Eugene Braswell and Reverend Allan Perry. Burial will follow in Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Trai is survived by his wife, Jyssica Murphy Lockwood of the home; his parents, Mark and Terri Lockwood of Boone; his grandfather and step-grandmother, Hayward and Janice Johnson of New Caney, Texas; two sisters, Tamieka Lockwood Roy and husband Adam of Boone, and Shekina Lockwood of Hickory; his great-grandmothers, Pearlie B. Lee of Cleveland, Texas, and Dorothy Pearson of New Caney, Texas; his mother-in-law, Susan Murphy of Boone; his father-in-law, Jaime Murphy of Citrus Springs, Florida; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Truly and Jeremiah Hughes of Spruce Pine, and James and Leah Murphy of Ocala, Florida; his aunts and uncles, Brenda Sutherland, Merlene Lockwood, and Mervyn Lockwood, all of Los Angeles, California, Pattie Arthur of Asheville, Hayward Johnson of Cleveland, Texas, Paul Johnson of San Diego, California, Carol and Eric Harmon of Banner Elk; six nieces, Moriah and Brielle Roy, Autumn and Victoria Holtsclaw, Taylor and Teagan Murphy; eight nephews, Malachi, Theaus, and Mathias Velez, Jeremiah Wilkes, Joshua Holtsclaw, Talon Murphy, Gabriel and Ethan Hughes, and a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral services for Traimel “Trai” Lockwood will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, January 29, 2014, at 2:00 o’clock, at the Boone National Guard Armory. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Charles Hindman, Elder Mervyn Lockwood and Mister Adam Roy. Full military honors will follow.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Leonard Ward, D. Jan. 23, 2014

Mr. Leonard J. Ward, age 79, of Boone, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center.

Leonard is survived by three sisters, Lizzie Stanley of Vale, Mary Sue Rose and husband Richard, and Betty Harmon and husband Lee, all of Vilas, and three brothers, Mack Daniel Ward and wife Clara, and William S. Ward and wife Ann, all of Conover, and Bobby Ward of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Jean Noah Ward, and his father and mother, John Ira Ward and Tinnie Harmon Ward.

Memorial services for Mr. Leonard J. Ward will be conducted Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 12:00 o’clock, at Vanderpool Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend L.N. Stanley.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ward family, in care of Clara Ward, 107 Wike Drive S.E., Conover, North Carolina, 28613.
