Gene R. Craft, age 66, of Highland Hall Road, Boone, passed away Monday morning, December 2, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Gene was born October 21, 1947 in Wilkes County, a son of the late Woodrow and Alma Owens Craft. He was a retired employee of the Appalachian State University Athletics Department and a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. Gene served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Gene is survived by his wife Beverly Craft of Boone; two sisters, Faye Osbourne and husband Jerry of West Jefferson, and Audrey Eller and husband Harold of Millers Creek, and one brother, Wayne Craft and wife Wanda of Wilkesboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Craft.

Funeral services for Gene R. Craft will be conducted Thursday afternoon, December 5, 2103, at 2:00 o’clock, at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Delmar James, Reverend Eugene Braswell, and Reverend Eric Proffit. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Ada Shook SmithMrs. Ada Mildred Shook Smith, age 91, of French Camp, Mississippi, formerly of the Matney Community, died Monday, December 2, 2013, in Mississippi.

Mrs. Smith was born August 15, 1922 in Avery County, a daughter of the late Hoyle Hayes Shook and Ruth Michael Shook. She was a retired director of the Home Economics Department at Avery County High School.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, William Hade Smith of French Camp, Mississippi and Banner Elk; one son, Reverend Donald F. Smith and wife Margie “Midge” Smith of French Camp; three grandsons, Jody Michael Smith of Brandon, Mississippi, Hoyle Douglas Smith of Starkville, Mississippi, and Casey Don Smith of Pensacola, Florida; one granddaughter, Vanessa Kay Smith of Buford, Georgia; three sisters, Audrey Rominger of Boone, Belinda Orr of Charlotte, and Joyce Wilson and husband Ken of Fairfax, Virginia, and two brothers, Bradley Shook and wife Mabel of Banner Elk, and Errol Shook and wife Patsy of Boone. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline North, and three brothers, Larry, Zeb, and Rhonda Shook.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Mildred Shook Smith will be conducted Friday morning, December 6, 2013, at 10:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 9:00 until 10:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Donald F. Smith. Burial will follow in White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Emma ParsonsEmma Nell Potter Parsons, age 66, of Snyder Branch Road, Todd, passed away Friday evening, November 29, 2013, at the home of a son.

Ms. Parsons was born February 15, 1947 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Rom and Mary Alice Snyder Potter. She was a retired self-employed caregiver and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Deep Gap.

Ms. Parsons is survived by two daughters, Emma Jean “Jeannie” Parsons and her fiance Keith Rhymer, and Lisa May Parsons, all of Deep Gap; two sons, James Mark Parsons and wife Kimberly Lynn, and Joey Edward Parsons and wife Becky, all of Deep Gap; her companion, Lynn Pardue of Todd; her former husband, James “J.E.” Parsons and wife Dede, of Deep Gap; one granddaughter, Kelsey Parsons; six grandsons, Christopher Parsons and wife Monica, Joey Parsons, Jr., Michael Parsons, Adam bunton, Shawn Adams, and Zachary Parsons; one great-grandson, Blake Parsons; six sisters, Grace Miller of Mountain City, Tennessee, Elithe Little of West Jefferson, Zelma Miller of Todd, Beatrice McMillian and husband Jessee, Rachel Potter Dancy, and Mary Potter, all of Crumpler, and four brothers, Sam Potter of Hickory, James Potter and wife Shirley of Boone, Paul Potter and wife Sue of Creston, and Butler Potter and wife Sheila of Todd. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Canter; one brother, Luther Potter, and twin infant siblings.

Funeral services for Emma Nell Potter Parsons will be conducted Monday afternoon, December 2, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Steve Williams and Reverend Nathan Caparoli. Burial will follow in the Potter-Main Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Mr. Noah David Norris, age 90, of Hardin Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, November 28, 2013 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born May 10, 1923 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Norman Cicero and Matilda Moretz Norris. He was a member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Director. David was the owner and operator of Norris Plumbing and Heating for over 30 years. He worked all hours of the night and day to serve his fellow man and was known for his kindness and generosity to others.

 He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Juanita Miller Norris, two daughters; Brenda Brown and husband Steve of Taylorsville, and Sandra Simmons and husband Dwight of Boone, four grandchildren; Tennille Brown Baker and husband Todd, Tyler Brown all of Taylorsville, Emilee Simmons Hughes and husband David of Alexandria, Virginia and Brent Simmons and wife Autumn of Banner Elk, one great granddaughter; Lucy Kate Hughes of Alexandria, Virginia, two sisters, Ann Berger of Lawndale, and Carolyn Kitts of Chattanooga, Tennessee, one brother, John Norris of Warren Michigan, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwin and Ralph Norris, and five sisters; Pearl Kerr, Louise Smith, Mary Price, Ruth Wilcox and Lucy Norris.

 Funeral services for Mr. Noah David Norris will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from from 1 unil 2 o’clock. Officiating will be Rev. Tim Lynch and Rev. Brent Bolick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 7504 US Hwy 421 South, Deep Gap, NC 28618. 

 The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock at Laurel Springs Baptist Church.
