James Edward Sudderth, D. Dec. 26, 2012
James Edward Sudderth, age 89, of Johnson City, formerly of Avery County, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Broadmore Assisted Living in Johnson City.

Mr. Sudderth was born February 10, 1923 in Avery County, a son of the late James Steele Sudderth and Essie Reece Sudderth. He was a retired contractor and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Sudderth is survived by his wife, Pauline Blalock Sudderth of the home; two daughters, Sara Buchanan and husband Dante, and Jeanie Williamson and husband Rich Molnar, all of Newland; four granddaughters, Betsy Austin, Rachel Buchanan, Suzanne Cabrera, and Scarlett Woody, and one grandson, Chris Smith. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Verner Miller, Helen Sutphin, and Wilda Sanders.

Funeral services for James Edward Sudderth will be conducted Friday afternoon, December 28, 2012, at 3:00 o’clock, at Aaron Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Preacher Mike Garland. Military graveside rites will follow, provided by American Legion Post 130, at Aaron Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends, following the funeral service.

Cecile Guy Rominger, affectionately known as ‘Granny Cecile’ age 88, of Old US Hwy 421, Sugar Grove, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at home.

Born December 3, 1924 in Trade, Tenn., she was a daughter of William Granville and Mabel Anderson Guy. Mrs. Rominger was a member and Sunday School Teacher at Willowdale Baptist for many years. She was employed by Shadowline and the Western Watauga Community Center, retiring at the age of 80.

Granny Cecile is survived by her children, Frank Guy of Sugar Grove, Shirley Osborne of Brooksville, Fl., daughter-in-law, Peggy Rominger of Vilas, Evelyn Greene & husband, Bob, of Boone, Harold Rominger and wife, Teresa, of Midland, Kenneth Rominger and wife, Barbara, of Charlotte, Ricky Rominger of Sugar Grove, Patricia Ward and husband, James, of Mocksville, and Deborah Rominger of Granite Falls; and 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Narvie; her son, Johnny; grandson, Joseph McKinley Rominger; daughter-in-law, Shirley Guy; son-in-law, Johnny Osborne; three brothers, Ted, Fred and infant; three sisters, Mildred, Helen and Ruby; and her parents.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 29, ,2012, at 2 o’clock at Willowdale Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Eugene Braswell, Rev. Kenneth Bryant and Rev. Ray Greene.

Burial will follow in the Harmon Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 PM at Austin & Barnes.

Sue Dunn Greer, age 69, of Morningside Drive, Granite Falls, passed away Monday evening. The Angels carried Sue home to celebrate Christmas with her Lord and Saviour on December 24, 2012. She departed from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Greer was born December 20, 1943 in Johnson County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Charles and Hallie Williams Dunn. She was homemaker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City.

Mrs. Greer is survived by one son, Charles Gwyn Greer of Nathlie, Virginia; three daughters, Jenny Lee Church of Butler, Tennessee, Raymona Lynn Greer Howell and husband Larry of Granite Falls, and Cindy Martin and husband Neal of Nebo, North Carolina; six granddaughters, Amanda Church Brewer and husband Anthony, and Suzanne Church Cannon and husband Luke, all of Butler, Tennessee, Myla Howell and Ava Howell of Granite Falls, Brooke Friesland, and MeKenna Martin, both of Nebo; one great-grandson, Brayden Cannon of Butler; two great-granddaughters, Emma Cannon and Trina Brewer, both of Butler; one sister, Lois Jennings and husband Perry of Mountain City, and two brothers, Paul Dunn and wife Cathy of Mountain City, and Gilbert Dunn of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond G. Greer; one sister, Linda Smith, and two brothers, Bill and Ronnie Dunn.

Funeral services for Sue Dunn Greer will be conducted Saturday afternoon, December 29, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Sutherland Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Gene Howell.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, at the church, prior to the service.

Mrs. Lucille Shook passed away peacefully in her sleep December 24, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital, after several years of declining health. She is now at peace in the arms of her blessed Savior.

The daughter of Rosa and Leonard Hodges of Valle Crucis, she lived most of her life in Banner Elk. She was a resident of Heritage of Sugar Mountain in Newland.

A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother; she loved to garden and quilt. Lucille was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Newland. In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her husband; Everett Shook, great grandson; Ricky Shook, four sisters; Rita Mae Townsend, Bessie Harrell, Ruth Easton, Ruby Bentley and one brother; Charles Hodges.

She is survived by four children; daughters Lois Strickland (Bob) of Pleasant Garden, NC, and Rachel Hoilman (Wayne) of Newland, sons; Everett Shook (Shirley) of Elizabethton, TN, and Bynum Shook (Christine) of Newland, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren, two sisters; Anne Baird of Hillsboro, Ohio and Clara Baird of Clearwater, Florida, five brothers; Dave Hodges of Salisbury, NC, Bob Hodges of Nebo, NC, Reece Hodges of Johnson City, TN, Russell Hodges of Hampton, TN and Herman Hodges of Monroe, NC.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Shook will be conducted Saturday at 12 noon at the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Joe Ingham. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 o\’clock until noon at the church. Burial will follow in the White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 933 Millers Gap Highway, Newland, NC 28657.

Mr. Charles Marvin “Sonny” Roberts, age 70, of Boone, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 evening at Cranberry House. Born July 21, 1942 in Watauga County he was a son of the late Marvin Woodrow and Blanche Keller Roberts. Sonny was a US Army Veteran, and a member of American Legion Post 130. He was a charter member of Greenway Baptist Church. Sonny was a member of the Community Chorus, the Gospel Jubilee Chorus and the Daniel Boone Garden Club.

He is survived by his children; Shawn Roberts and wife Leslie of Boone and Heather Tomberlin and husband Joe of Youngsville, NC, three grandchildren; Grace, Jacob and Jordan Tomberlin, and one sister; Malinda Wilcox and husband Frank of Lenoir. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters; Lillian Sweitzer and Dot Vandyke and one brother William Roberts.

Funeral services for Mr. Sonny Roberts will be conducted Friday at 12 noon at Greenway Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. David Luster. Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 130 will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday morning from 11 o’clock until noon at Greenway Baptist Church.

Andrew Calhoun Irvine, age 90, of Nathan’s Lane, Boone, died Friday afternoon, December 21, 2012 at the Davant Rehab. & Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock. Born Janluary 10, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Andy was a son of James and Jane Calhoon Irvine. Mr. Irvine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a retired Quality Control engineer from IRC in Boone.

Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Jane Coons and husband, Cliff, of Smithville, Texas; two grandchildren, Krista Jaclyn Coons of Smithville, Texas, and Brett Andrew Coons of Houston, Texas; and a sister, Jean Booker of St. Augustine, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Elva Montanye Irvine; a son, Robert Andrew Irvine; and his parents, James and Jane Calhoun Irvine.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, December 24, 2012, at 2 o’clock at the First Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Joel Long. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at the church.

Jennie Lee Deal, Dec. 20, 2012
Jennie Lee Bingham Deal, 91, of Boone, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012.

Born October 1, 1921, Jennie Lee was one of eight children born to Dr. and Mrs. R. K. Bingham. She is survived by three children: Sandra Deal, of Sugar Grove; Jim Deal and wife Shelia, of Boone; and Harvey Deal and wife Carolyn, of Cornelius, NC; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Brown Bingham, of Boone and Dorothy Bingham, of Raleigh, NC. Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy of nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jennie Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Commander James Marvin Deal; four brothers: Bill Bingham, R. K. Bingham, John Bingham, and Richard Bingham; three sisters; Evelyn B. Smith, Pauline B. Thomas, and Miriam B. Smith.

After graduating from Appalachian State Teachers College, Mrs. Deal married James M. Deal of Cove Creek and spent the next twenty years as a career Navy wife, rearing three children and living all across the Untied States. Upon her husband’s retirement, she and her family returned to their home in Watauga County where she began her career as a primary grades teacher at Mabel Elementary School. These twenty-five years were some of the most fulfilling and happy years of her life. She will continue to be cherished by all her former students whose lives she touched in so many enduring ways.

Jennie Lee will also be missed by her many bridge partners who counted on her always to make her bid, and she always did.

Mrs. Deal was a lifelong member of Boone United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Friday Afternoon Club, of which her mother, Jennie Norris Bingham, was a charter member.

Funeral services for Jennie Lee Bingham Deal will be held at Boone United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 23, at 2:00 p.m. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. A celebration of her life will take place at the church immediately after her service until 3:45 p.m. A private family internment service will follow at Mount Lawn Park and Gardens in Boone.

David Winebarger, age 60, of Hopewell Church Road, Boone, died Thursday morning, December 20, 2012, at his home.

David was born October 10, 1952 in Watauga County, a son of Vernita Bryant Winebarger and the late Walter M. Winebarger. He was a retired timber cutter and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

David is survived by his wife, Rachel “Becky” Norris Winebarger of the home; one daughter, Patsy Winebarger Hendricks and husband Wilbert of El Paso, Texas; one granddaughter, Neoami Hendricks of El Paso; two grandsons, Jordan Hendricks and Marques Spencer, both of El Paso; his mother, Vernita Bryant Winebarger of Boone; one sister, Anne Winebarger Norris of Boone, and two brothers, Allen Winebarger and Dale Winebarger, both of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by Deborah Winebarger, and one brother, Thomas Winebarger.

Funeral services for David Winebarger will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Bollinger and Pastor Jerry Moretz officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Winebarger Cemetery.

Lowell R. Cooke, age 93, of Deck Hill Road, Blowing Rock, died Wednesday morning, December 19, 2012, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

Mr. Cooke was born November 1, 1919 in Watauga County, a son of the late Barry and Jennie Townsend Cooke. He was a retired employee of the North Carolina Department of Transportation and served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Cooke was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church.

Mr. Cooke is survived by two daughters, Wanda Bolick of Blowing Rock, and Janice “Jan” Cashion and husband Bob of Statesville; one son, Jerry W. Cooke of Lincolnton; one grandson, Jeff Bolick of Blowing Rock; four granddaughters, Kristi DeMonbreun of Charlotte, Melanie Moore and husband Tom of Blowing Rock, Melinda Childress and husband John of Statesville, and Carson Cooke of Cramerton, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, Earl Brewer of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and one sister-in-law, Helen Cooke of Lenoir. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, and a number nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Brewer Cooke; three brothers, Byron, Aston, and Howard Cooke, and three sisters, Arvila Waldrop, Hazel Cooke, and Arlee Cooke.

Funeral services for Mr. Lowell R. Cooke will be conducted Saturday morning, December 22, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Burl Greer. Military rites will follow, provided by American Legion Post 130 of Boone. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service.
