Joan Parlier

Joan R. Parlier, D. Dec. 9, 2012
Mrs. Joan Ruth Parlier, age 78, of Joe Parlier Road, Elk Park, passed away Sunday morning, December 9, 2012 at her home. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Otto and Margaret Griffith Waldecker. Joan was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by her children; Arnold Parlier and wife Brenda of Granite Falls, Charles Parlier and wife Willa Deane of Mountain City, Sandra Parlier of Elk Park, James Parlier of West Jefferson, Linda Biggs and husband Gary of Elk Park, and Jeff Parlier and wife Sondra of Morganton, fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, one brother; Richard Waldecker of Michigan, and two sisters; Gerry Riley and Delores Tyson both of Michigan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Sanford Arnold Parlier, one son, Joe Parlier, four brothers; Ernie, Russell, Lawrence, and Edward Waldecker, and three sisters; her twin, Jean Miller Lamothe, Kathryn Oliver and Florence Murray, and two granddaughters; Shannon and Donna Kay Mynes.

Funeral services for Mrs. Joan Ruth Parlier will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dennis Church and Rev. David Burnop. Burial will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.

Grady Barnes

Mr. Grady M. Barnes, D. Dec. 5, 2012
Grady M. Barnes, 94, of Knollwood Drive, Boone, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Born June 30, 1918 in Watauga County, he was a son of Romulus Linney and Maude Bumgarner Barnes. Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and retired from Blue Ridge Electric.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Bachman Barnes; children, Barbara Henson and husband, Dennis, of Mountain City, TN, Caroline Shockley of Vilas, Bob Barnes and wife, Vivian, Margaret Barnes, and Shirley Miller and husband, Walter, all of Boone; ten grandchildren, Allen Henson and wife, Kelly, of Knoxville, TN, Shelia Swift and husband, Greg, of Powell, TN, Bill Henson and wife, Jennifer, of Johnson City, TN, Marc Shockley of Asheville, David Shockley and friend, Christina, of Blowing Rock, Melissa Shockley of Vilas, Dr. Nathan Barnes of Benson, Dr. Scott Miller and wife, Chika, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Emily Cunningham and husband, Justin, of Huntersville, and Garrett Miller of Boone; eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Bernice Barnes of Naples, Fla. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Eulala Hodges, Ruth Ledford, and Mabel Mays; and brothers, Kenneth ‘Prince’ Barnes, and J. C. Barnes.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 1 PM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, officiated by Father Dave Brzoska. Burial, with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 130, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes.

Pauline Shook North

Pauline “Polly” Shook North, Dec. 5, 2012
Pauline “Polly” Shook North, age 88, of 411 Poplar Hill Drive, Boone, passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 5, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. North was born May 28, 1924 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Hoyle Hayes Shook and Ruth Michael Shook. Pauline lived in College Park, Georgia for many years. She loved the Lord and served him faithfully. Pauline attended Gardner Webb College, Columbia Bible College, and graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Banner Elk. She enjoyed working in her profession as a registered nurse for many years.

Life was made sweeter for many people because of her easy laughter and bright eyes. She had the gentle hands of a loving and caring nurse.

Mrs. North is survived by three sons, Christopher L. North and wife Anita, Norman K. North, L. Brett North and wife Ann, all of the Atlanta, Georgia area; four sisters, Ada Mildred Smith and husband Hade of Banner Elk, Audrey Rominger of Boone, Belinda Orr of Charlotte, and Joyce Wilson and husband Kenneth of Ashburn, Virginia, and two brothers, William Bradley Shook and wife Mabel of Banner Elk, and Errol Shook and wife Patsy of Boone. She is also survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Gentry S. North, Jr.; one son, Gentry S. North III; one grandson, Clay Stanton North, and three brothers, Zeb Shook, Rhonda Shook, and Larry Shook.

Funeral services for Pauline “Polly” Shook North will be conducted Saturday afternoon, December 8, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at White Rock Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Mr. Brett North and Reverend Lynn Shook. Burial will follow in White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Merritt A. Lawson, D. Dec. 4, 2012
Merritt A. Lawson, age 80, of 165-A Schaffer Road, the Foscoe Community, died Tuesday evening, December 4, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife, Donna Lawson of the home; two sons, Mark Lawson and wife Lori of Belview, Nebraska, and Christopher Lawson and wife Misty of Lino Lake, Minnesota; four granddaughters, Keziah Lawson, Michael Lawson, Charis Lawson, and Amanda Lawson, and two grandsons, Felipe Lawson and Elijah Lawson.

Funeral services for Merritt A. Lawson will be conducted Wednesday morning, December 12, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home Chapel in Kankakee, Illinois. Burial will follow in Kankakee Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.
