Irene Elizabeth Galatis, D. Aug. 21, 2012
Irene Elizabeth Galatis, age 87, of 418 Dogwood Lane, Blowing Rock ,died Tuesday August 21, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Galatis is survived by two sons, Dwight Laughter and wife Linda, and David Laughter both of Blowing Rock; one sister Doris Lewis of Hickory, one grandson, David Laughter, Jr. and his wife Noelle of Chicago, two great-grandchildren David Laughter, III and Jack Laughter, both of Chicago.
A memorial service for Mrs. Irene Galatis will be conducted Saturday morning, August 25, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be The Reverend Dr. Lynn Stall.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Mark Chaney, D. Aug. 20, 2012
Rev. Mark Lee Chaney, age 48, of Buckshot Circle, Boone, passed away Monday afternoon, August 20, 2012 at Watauga Medical Center. Born July 26, 1964 in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of the late John Vann Chaney and Iva Lee Grant Chaney Sizemore. Mark was a graduate of Appalachian State University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was the senior Pastor at Howards Creek Baptist Church and had served as youth Pastor at Shiloh Baptist Church in Monroe and as Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church in Boone.
He is survived by his wife; Mitzi Miller Chaney, one son; Christian Chaney of Sanford, one daughter; Rebekah Chaney of Boone, one brother; Tim Chaney and wife Denise of Monroe, his step-father; Gary Sizemore of Monroe, his mother and father in law; John and Wanda Miller of Indian Trail, one sister-in-law; Cherie Pearsall and husband Kevin of Gastonia, one brother-in-law; Johnny Miller and wife Julie of Mineral Springs, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; John Vann Chaney and Iva Lee Grant Chaney Sizemore.
A Celebration of Life service for Rev. Mark Lee Chaney will be conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Joe London and Rev. Don Whitener. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to EKG (Eternal Kingdom Growth), in care of Howards Creek Baptist Church, 240 Howards Creek Church Road, Boone, NC 28607.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 o’clock until 9 o’clock at Howards Creek Church.

Mack A. Vannoy, age 56, of 401 Talon Drive, Boone, died Sunday evening, August 19, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mr. Vannoy is survived by his wife, Ruth Ballard Vannoy of the home; his father and mother, Fred and Nancy Hicks Vannoy of Todd; two sisters, Debbie Vannoy Williams and husband Mike, and Dr. Sandy Vannoy and husband Jim Todd, all of Todd; one brother, Dr. John Vannoy and wife Angel of Mooresville; one brother-in-law, Kenny Ballard and wife Kathy, and one sister-in-law, Liz Ballard, all of Sevierville, Tennessee; three nephews, Dr. Chad Moretz and wife April of Marion, Jeff Moretz and wife Stephanie of Todd, and Barrett Vannoy of Mooresville; two nieces, Carly Vannoy of Mooresville, and Olivia Clark of Sevierville; one great-niece, Indya Moretz, and one great-nephew, Drake Moretz, both of Marion.
Funeral services for Mack A. Vannoy will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, August 22, 2012, at 3:00 o’clock, at Pilot Mountain Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Keith Woodie and Reverend Homer Murdock. Burial will follow in Pilot Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Eulala Hodges,D. Aug. 18, 2012
Eulala Barnes Hodges, 96, of Laurel Fork Road, Vilas, passed peacefully Saturday morning, August 18, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Born February 22, 1916 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Linney and Maude Bumgarner Barnes. Mrs. Hodges was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Ruth Shew and husband, Jack, of Vilas, Ruby Hornsby and husband, Joe, of Camden, S.C., and Rebecca White and husband, Welbourne, of Gilbert, S.C.; three sons, Jimmy Hodges and wife, Glenda, of Boone, Finley Hodges and wife, Linda, and John Hodges, and wife Allison, all of Vilas; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; brother, Grady Barnes and wife Helen, of Boone; and Bernice Barnes of Naples, Fla. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, and her beloved extended family at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard James Hodges; three grandchildren, Owen ‘Sonny’ Greer Jr., and infants Cole Hornsby and Jeffrey David Hodges; daughter-in-law, Judy Brown Hodges; two brothers, Kenneth ‘Prince’ Barnes and J. C. Barnes; and two sisters, Ruth Ledford and Mabel Mays.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, August 21, 2012, at 2 o’clock at the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Wynn Greer. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Danner Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, August 20th from 6 until 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes. At other times, the family will be at the Hodges residence.

Jay Dallas Edmisten, age 70, of San Rafael, California, formerly of Watauga County, died Friday, August 17, 2012, in San Rafael.
Mr. Edmisten is survived by his wife, Carmen Isabel Edmisten of the home; two sons, Gregory Edmisten and wife June, and Garsie Edmisten and wife Rachelle; two daughters, Carmen Smith and husband John, and Aurelia Edmisten; his father, Robert Dallas Edmisten, Jr. of Roan Mountain, Tennessee; two sisters, Anita Presnell and husband Harvey of Deep Gap, and Evelyn Yates and husband Ralph of Boone, and one brother Jerry Edmisten, wife Harriett of Sugar Grove. He is also survived by five grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Baird Meyers.
Funeral services for Mr. Jay Dallas Edmisten will be conducted Friday, August 24, 2012, at Saint Peter & Saint Paul Catholic Church in San Rafeal, California.
A local memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rachel Marie Bickley, age 79 of 455 Hemlock Hill Road in Boone died Thursday, August 16, 2012.
Mrs. Bickley is survived by her husband of 50 years Albert C. Bickley; two sisters Betty Moore of Boone and Lois Parsons and her husband Earl of Lenoir; two brothers Dennis Triplette and his wife Karen of Fort Mill, SC and Ned Triplette and wife Tina of Lenoir and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bill Banner, D. Aug. 16, 2012
Mr. William Combs “Bill” Banner, age 74, of 952 Georges Gap Road, Vilas, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Jack and Shirley Robbins Center, Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care in Hudson.
Mr. Banner was born September 2, 1937 in Watauga County, a son of the late Arthur McTyre Banner and Alice Combs Banner. He was the retired owner of Banner’s Auto Parts and a member of Willowdale Baptist Church. Mr. Banner also served in the United States Marines.
Mr. Banner is survived by his wife, Delores “Dodie” Henson Banner of the home; three daughters, Pam Banner Wood and husband Mike of Boone, Tina Banner Gragg and husband Jimmy of Boone, and Mitzi Banner Bunton and husband George of Linville; three granddaughters, Kassie Elizabeth Casner of Charlotte, Savanna Ellen Wood, and Ellie Hope Casner, both of Boone; three grandsons, Titus William Casner of Boone, Creed Alan Casner of Boone, and Gabriel William Bunton of Linville; two sisters, Charlotte Martin and husband Wiley of Boone, and Eva Nell Alexander of Newland; two brothers, Martin Banner and wife Peggy of Boone, and John Banner and wife Flootie of Edgefield, South Carolina, five sisters-in-law. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight sisters, Ethel Banner, Blanche Phillips, Susie Henson, Helen Williams, Ruth Warren, Josephine Joines, Toni Edmisten Paris, and Edith Catherine Banner; four brothers, Jim, Joe, Bob, and Mac Banner; four sisters-in-law, and seven brothers-in-law.
Funeral services for Mr. William Combs “Bill” Banner will be conducted Monday afternoon, August 20, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Eugene Braswell. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130, will follow in Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, from 6:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.
