William Robert “Bill” Baird, D. April 15, 2012

William Robert “Bill” Baird, age 69, of Lenoir, a native and former resident of Boone, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Gateway Nursing Center in Lenoir.

Mr. Baird was born October 4, 1942 in Watauga County, a son of the late Benjamin Baxter Baird and Nora Hayes Baird. He was a retired truck driver for Johnson Motor Lines, in Charlotte, and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone.

Mr. Baird is survived by one sister, Deborah B. Watson and husband Morris of Lenoir; two nieces, Wendy Watson McGinnis and husband Kevin, and Ginger Watson Coffey and husband Jeff, all of Lenoir, and one great nephew, Philip Mark Colvard of Lenoir. He is also survived by a number of cousins and other relatives.

Memorial services for William Robert “Bill” Baird will be conducted Friday afternoon, April 20, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside rites with Masonic Rites will follow in the Baird Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Morgan Lee Taylor, Jr., D. April 15, 2012

Morgan Lee Taylor, Jr., 71, died Sunday evening, April 15, 2012.

Morgan was born October 9, 1940 in Bonifay, Florida, son of Ollie Gainey Taylor and the late Morgan Lee Taylor, Sr. He will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved the Lord and his family. A gentle, dedicated and hardworking man with sense of humor and a kind heart, Morgan retired from Miami Tiresoles in 2008 where he worked for more than 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved fishing, shooting, hunting and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Reid Taylor, his son and daughter-in-law Morgan Lee Taylor III and Mitzy Willard Taylor, daughter and son-in-law Pamela Taylor Gottlieb and Jack Gottlieb, his mother, Ollie Gainey Taylor, four grandchildren, Megan Taylor, Meredith Taylor, Curtis Gottlieb and Kevin Gottlieb, one sister Glenda Taylor Ragan, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Billy and Joan Reid. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Morgan Lee Taylor, Sr., one brother-in-law Jack Ragan, and one niece Debbie Heffner.

Funeral services for Morgan Lee Taylor, Jr. will be conducted Thursday afternoon, April 19, 2012, at 7:00 o’clock, at Fred Hunters Funeral Home in Hollywood, Florida. The body will lie in state, from 5:00 until 7:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday, April 21, 2012, at Reform Church Cemetery in Blowing Rock, officiated by Reverend Gordon Noble.

The family will receive friends Thursday, from 5:00 until 7:00 o’clock, at Fred Hunters Funeral Home.

Beulah Watson Triplett, D. April 15, 2012

Mrs. Beulah Watson Triplett, age 85, of 2858 Old U.S. Highway 421 South, Boone, died Sunday morning, April 15, 2012, at her home.

Mrs. Triplett was born December 23, 1926 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Thomas J. Watson and Belle Greene Watson. She was a retired cook for Parkway Elementary School, and a member of Mount Ephriam Baptist Church.

Mrs. Triplett is survived by one son, Roy T. Triplett and wife Carolyn of Vilas; three daughters, Mary Evalee Hodges and husband Worley, and Wanda Bowman and husband Ron, all of Lenoir, and Bertha T. Wilson and husband Phil of Vilas; two sisters, Reba Herman of Vilas and Betty Watson Hollars of Boone; one brother, Arlie Watson of Boone; three granddaughters, Lisa Parson, Anita Watson, and Melanie Wilson, and five grandsons, Terry Hodges, Steve Hodges, Mark Hodges, David Beck, and Jordan Triplett. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Verlon Lee Triplett; one granddaughter, Sherry Gale Beck; one sister, Anna Mae Hollars, and five brothers, Burl, Frank, Fred, Allie, and O.C. Watson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Beulah Watson Triplett will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 17, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Westview Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Zane Tester and Reverend Robert Hicks, Jr. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, the family will be at the Triplett residence, 2858 Old U.S. Highway 421 South, Boone.

Viola M. Young

Viola Elizabeth Mann Young, D. April 14, 2012

Viola Elizabeth Mann Young, age 97, of Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation, and formerly of Morningside Drive, Boone, died Saturday morning, April 14, 2012 at Glenbridge. Born May 21, 1914 in Chatham County, she was a daughter of Oscar Brent and Stella Smith Mann. Mrs. Young received a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State Teachers College, and for a time, taught school in Mebane and Maiden. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone and a homemaker.

Mrs. Young is survived by one son, Sid Young and wife, Marsha, of South Boston, Va.; two daughters, Susan Newton and husband, Sam, of Henderson, and Emma Cox and husband, Morris, of Purlear; seven grandchildren, Michael Newton and wife, Dana, of Creedmoor, Brooke Wilkerson and husband, Joe, of Alton, Va., Morgan Young of South Boston, Va., Jesse Cox and wife, Emily, of Tallahassee, Fla., Adrian Cox and wife, Jennifer, of Concord, Erin Caparolie and husband, Nathan, of Deep Gap, and Jeremy Cox and wife, Shannon, of Charlotte; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Stella Wilson Jones and sister-in-law, Pheobia Mann, both of Pittsboro. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James Oliver Young, two brothers, Fletcher and Horace Mann, and one sister, Katherine Mann Wilson.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday morning, April 16, 2012, at 11 o’clock at the Greene-Young Cemetery in Bakersville, officiated by Rev. Nathan Caparolie.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Josephine “Jo” Winfree Watson, D. April 14, 2012

Josephine “Jo” Winfree Watson, age 82, of Boone, beloved mother and grandmother, passed from this life into her Heavenly reward on April 14, 2012, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.

Jo was born December 9, 1929 in Guilford County, a daughter of the late Doke and Nettie Lee Stegall Winfree. For the past 52 years, Jo worked at the Dan’l Boone Inn Restaurant. She considered the “Inn” her second home and the staff as her second family. As a member of First Baptist Church of Boone, she attended Dr. George Miles Sunday School Class, where Sunday School began with a round of hugs from her dear sweet classmates.

Her children would like to express their gratitude to the I.C.U. staffs at Watauga and Forsyth Hospitals for the loving care received by thier mother.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Ray C. Watson of San Antonio, Texas; her daughters, Jane Watson Beatty of Yadkinville, and Sandra Byrd and Ralph of Rockport, Texas; her grandchildren, Chris Watson, Barbie W. Hood and Sam, Brian Beatty and Christy, and Erin B. Hardin and Rob; her great-grandchildren, Ryan and Sammy Hood, and Ryan and Rayne Haynes, and her sisters, Annabel Wyrick and Bob, and Betty Apple and Elwood. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Watson; five brothers and two sisters.

A celebration of life service for Josephine “Jo” Winfree Watson will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at First Baptist Church of Boone. The body will lie in state, in the sanctuary, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Dr. Roy Dobbyns. Burial will follow in Boone City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

James Edwin Carroll, age 52, of North Pine Run Road, Boone, died Saturday, April 14, 2012. Born July 6, 1959 in Watauga County, he was a son of Paul J. and Virginia Norris Carroll. James was a carpenter and roofer.

James is survived by his wife, Mandolyn Nichole Carroll; his mother, Virginia Norris Carroll of Boone; one daughter, Lindsey Miller of Todd; one son, Keith Carroll and wife Kathy, of Bethel; three grandchildren, Kyle Hicks, Daniel Ward, and Sarina Carroll; two sisters, Betsy Cox and husband, Donnie,

Mrs. Tansy Rhymer Ragan, age 81, of Lenoir, a native and former resident of the Triplett Community, died Saturday evening, April 14, 2012, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Mrs. Ragan was born April 29, 1930 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Charlie Dick Rhymer and Mattie Wheeler Rhymer. She was a homemaker and a member of Crestview Baptist Church in Lenoir.

Mrs. Ragan is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ragan Younce of Lenoir; two granddaughters, Tammi J. King and husband Keley, and Ashley DeBusk and husband Wesley, all of Granite Falls; one grandson, William D. Krapish of Lenoir; two great-granddaughters, Anna King of Granite Falls and Kateland Krapish of Lenoir; two great-grandsons, Cody DeBusk and Peyton King, both of Granite Falls; one sister, Carolyn Harrison and husband J.W. of Lenoir; three brothers, Stewart Rhymer and wife Joyce of Deep Gap, Kenneth Rhymer and wife Pat of Boone, and Ernie Rhymer and wife Judy of Yadkinville, and two sisters-in-law, Mary Rhymer of Hudson and Faye Rhymer of Deep Gap. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Arnold Ragan; one daughter, Joann Ragan; four sisters, Della Hartley, Georgia Wheeler, Opal Triplett, and Maggie Triplett, and four brothers, Clise, Claude, Gwyn, and Connard Rhymer.

Mrs. Cleo Greene Rhyne, age 87, of 209 Perkins Street, Boone, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Rhyne was born January 13, 1925 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Clyde R. Greene and Gertrude Plyler Greene. She was a retired Cerified Operating Room Nurse at Watauga Medical Center for over 30 years. Mrs. Rhyne was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boone.

Mrs. Rhyne is survived by one grandson, Adam Rhyne of Boone; one granddaughter, Emily Rhyne of Boone; two brothers, Perry Greene, and Cecil Greene and wife Hazel, all of Boone; one sister, Betty Koontz of Boone, and one sister-in-law, Ruth Rhyne of Weaverville, NC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Rhyne; one son, Charles Rhyne; her father and mother, Clyde R. Greene and Gertrude Plyler Greene; one sister, Mary Sue Miller; a brother-in-law, Paul Miller, and a sister-in-law, Theresa Greene.

Mrs. Dorothy Roeanah Calloway, age 86, of 1798 Hardin Road, Boone, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Glenbridge Health Care.

Mrs. Calloway was born in Rowan County to the late Robert Anderson Calloway and Odessa Lowder Calloway, she was retired from Westinghouse in Baltimore, Maryland after 40 years of service.

Mrs. Calloway is survived by one step-son, Dink Miller and wife Kim, of Boone, two cousins, Lydia Barfield of Salisbury, Sylvia Borchette and husband Joe, of Hamptonville, North Carolina, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addtion to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Lee Miller, two brothers, R.D. Calloway and Robert Bruce Calloway, and three sisters, Waulena Abernathy, Floella Allen, and Judy Williams.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Dorothy Calloway will be conducted Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10 until 11. Jeff Graybeal will officiate.

Mrs. Eileen Buchanan, age 91, of 455 Scenic Drive, Vilas, died Thursday April 12, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Buchanan is survived by, one son, James Bucky Buchanan and wife Margo, of Vilas, one daughter, Gail Schulman and husband Steve of Phoenix, Oregon, two grandsons, Jonathan David Buchanan of Vilas and James Joseph Welch of Mary Hill, North Carolina, and one granddaughter, Lori Slight of Storm Lake, Iowa. She is also survived by two great-granddaughters, and two great great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Buchanan, Jr., her father and mother, George Wright and Mae Waterworth Wright, a granddaughter, Laura Ballance, and a sister, Una Mae Horton.

Mrs. Barbara Friley Jones, age 76, of Sebring, Florida and Blowing Rock, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.

Mrs. Jones is survived by one son, Jonathan M. Jones and wife Debbie of Blowing Rock, one grandaughter, Darcy Leigh Jones, a student at Elon University and one grandson, Rhyne McLeod Jones, of Blowing Rock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Weeks Jones, her father and mother, John Henry Friley and Myrtle McLeod Friley.

A private memorial service is planned for Mrs. Barbara Friley Jones at St. Mary’s Of The Hills Episcopal Church.

Virginia Smith Stacks

Virginia Smith Stacks, D. April 10, 2012

Virginia Smith Stacks, age 82, of Blowing Rock, died Tuesday at Blowing Rock Extended Care.

Mrs. Stacks was born in Charlotte, NC and moved to Blowing Rock with her family in 1966. She attended Appalachian State University and was a member of the Avery/ Watauga and North Carolina boards of Realtors. She was the daughter of the late Charles Black & Mary Effie Tomberlin Smith.

Survivors include her sons, Leon Stacks, III of Blowing Rock and David Stacks and wife Anne, of Augusta, Georgia, a brother and sister in law, Howard and Judy Smith of Blowing Rock and Charlotte, a granddaughter, Kara Collier Smith, of Blowing Rock, two grandsons, Matthew W. Stacks, and Daniel M. Stacks both of Augusta, Georgia.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, C. Ralph Smith, and a sister Carolyn Smith Friede.

She was one of Blowing Rock’s pioneering women business owners and real-estate brokers.

As a member of the town’s Board of Adjustments, Mrs. Stacks in 1989 helped create Broyhill Park at Mayview Lake, the Annie L. Cannon Memorial Garden and the Dr. Charles Davant Jr. Athletic Field.

The town council appointed Mrs. Stacks to several terms on the Board of Adjustments where she was a chairmen for more than a decade.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock for more than four decades. She served as chairman and a member of several pulpit committees, leading the search for a new pastor on several occasions. She was the chairman of the church’s building committee, which oversaw the church’s facility on Sunset Drive as well as a major remodeling of First Baptist Church’s main entranceway.

Mrs. Stacks served on the community advisory board for First Citizens Bank. Alone or sometimes with business partners, she developed and operated self- storage rental warehouses on Valley Boulevard (U.S. Highway 321). She was executive secretary of the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show in the 1970s.

She began her real estate career in the mid-1970s, when there were few women in the industry locally. Mrs. Stacks was a realty agent for Hallmark Realty until she started her own brokerage-Virginia Stacks Realty- specializing in residential property sales.

Virginia Stacks Realty was located in the historic stone Rinehart Building, which Mrs. Stacks continued to own after she retired in 1991. The Rinehart Building near the corner of Main Street and Yonahlossee Road (U.S. Highway 221) today houses Main Street Gallery and a number of residential apartments.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A. M. Saturday, April 14, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock. Dr. Marshall Edwards will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:00 until 11:00. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Hampton Funeral Service.

Mrs. Wanda Holman McNeal, age 77, of Highland Avenue, Boone, died Tuesday morning, April 10, 2012 at Watauga Medical Center. Born January 5, 1935 in Ashe County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Pearl Howell Holman. Wanda was a homemaker and enjoyed her many friends and playing bingo.

She is survived by one daughter; Terry McNeal Greer and husband Bobby of Fleetwood, her grandchildren; Shawn Peele and wife Jenny and their daughter Haileigh of Boone, Aaron Peele and wife Jessica and his children Landon and Cayden of West Jefferson and Alicia Greer and husband Jonathan and their son Austin of Boone; two half sisters; Joann Holman Wilcox of Lenoir and Dare Holman Jones of Boone, two half brothers; Freddie Holman and Jimmy Holman both of Todd, one aunt Iris Parsons of Boone, and a number of very special nieces and nephews, and her friends and bingo buddies. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years; Billy McNeal, her grandparents; Albert and Rebecca Parsons, two half sisters; Lucy Holman Jones and Polly Holman Bledsoe, and one half brother; Gwen Holman.

Mattie Lou Wilson

Mattie Lou Wilson, D. April 10, 2012

Mrs. Mattie Lou Wilson, age 94, of 146 Adams Cemetery Road, Vilas, and more recently, of the Life Care Center in Banner Elk, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Wilson was a retired English teacher with 35 years of service in Watauga County at Bethel Elementary, Cove Creek High School, and Watauga High School. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College with a B.S. in Secondary Education and was a member of Cove Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by one daughter, Tricia L. Wilson, of Linville, a sister, Emogene Thomas of Lexington, several nieces and nephews, and a beloved family friend, Lindy Johnson, of Trade, Tennesse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Lee Wilson, an infant son, Norman Lee Wilson, Jr., her father and mother, O.J. and Emma Shull Harmon, and two sisters, Jamie Henson and Sarah “Billie” Hayes.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday at Cove Creek Baptist Church. Reverend Burl Greer, Terry Alexander and Craig Weaver will officiate. The body will lie in state from 12:00 until 1:00 at the church.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship following the graveside service and burial.

Steven Marc Carlson, D. April 9, 2012

Mr. Steven Marc Carlson, age 49, of Boone, died Monday, April 9, 2012.

He was survived by his father & mother, Marc Ryan Carlson and Mary Ruth Mason Carlson, of Boone, two sisters Sandra Butler and husband Stephen, New Palestine, Indiana, and Monica Rose of Boone, a brother Robert Carlson of Johnson City. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his biological mother, Beth Wood Carlson.

There will be no service. A visitation will be held Thursday April 12, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.
