Karen V. Bell 
(January 01, 1954 – May 11, 2018) 

    Karen Bell, age 63 of Fleetwood, N.C. passed away on May 11, 2018. She was born to the late Thomas and Helen Bell in Raleigh, N.C. Karen graduated with a bachelors degree from East Carolina University and a masters degree from Georgia State University. She taught Special Education in Georgia for more than 30 years. She was also a talented artist and loved the North Carolina mountains. A loving wife and mother, she is survived by her husband John Wieland, son Benjamin, daughter Abigail, brother Thomas Bell of Raleigh, N.C., and sister Janet Bell Cantrelle of Atlanta, Ga. Karen was a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics, and memorials may be made to the Special Olympics. Special thanks to Deerfield Ridge, Watauga Medical Center, and the amazing people at Medi Home Health & Hospice.

Eliza M. Norris 
(March 07, 1933 – May 12, 2018) 

    Mrs. Eliza Mae Jarvis Norris, age 85 of Vilas, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018. 
    She was a native of Madison County, NC and the daughter of the late Clarence J. Jarvis, Sr. and Nancy Maude Clouse Jarvis. She taught in the Putnam County Ohio school system for many years, teaching math, history and physical education. Eliza was an interpreter for the deaf at Crystal Avenue Baptist Church in Findlay, OH. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her friends and family. She spent 8 summers with her husband doing mission work in Haiti through Mission POSSIBLE out of Findlay, OH, and also served on the Mission POSSIBLE board for several years.
    
    She is survived by her husband Lewis B. Norris, two daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Norris Felver and husband Timothy of Vilas, Cynthia Suzzanne Norris Hendrickson and husband Rob of Tiffin, OH; brother William Leroy Jarvis, Sr. and wife Alma of Weaverville, NC; sister-in-law Irene Jarvis of Gastonia, NC; by granddaughters Sondra Meier, Mandy Jenkins, Leslie Jenkins and Elixia Chestnutt; Grandsons Charles Jenkins, Jr. and Cat Longworth; Great-granddaughters Elizabeth Ferris, Charlese Ferris, Audrey Meier, Zoey Chestnutt, Alexis Smith, Mallory Chestnutt and Emma Jenkins; Great-grandsons Jaden Jenkins,Hunter Jenkins, Justice Jenkins, Zachary Ferris, Charles Jenkins, III, Rocco Chestnutt, Franco Chestnutt, Loyal Longworth and Hendrix Smith. 
    
    She was preceded in death by two brothers: James and Jack Jarvis; two sisters: Mary Powell and Ruth Dillingham; one sister-in-law, Wilma Jarvis; and two brother-in-laws: Jack Powell and Harry Dillingham.
    
    Funeral services for Eliza Norris will be conducted Friday, May 18, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Charlie Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Norris Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12-2 p.m. prior to the services (at the church).

Ronald S. Triplett 
(December 11, 1945 – May 15, 2018) 

    Mr. Ronald Steve Triplett, age 72, of Deep Gap, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018.
    He was the son of Della Cox Triplett Trivette and the late Frank Monroe Triplett. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step-father Clemon Trivette.
    He is survived by two sisters; Brenda Triplett Dew and husband Eddie of Wilkesboro, and Phyllis Jean Triplett of North Wilkesboro. His mother, Della Cox Triplett Trivette of Deep Gap, two step-brothers; David Trivette and wife Marcella of Jefferson, and J.C. Trivette of Fleetwood. Twelve nieces and nephews also survive.
    The graveside services will be private. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 20, 2018 in the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church, Deep Gap, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Mr. Joseph L. Bastarache 
(September 15, 1942 – May 15, 2018) 

    May 16, 2018
    Joseph Louis Bastarache, Jr., age 76, of Blowing Rock, passed away, Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Deerfield Ridge. Born September 15, 1942 in New Bedford, MA, he was a son of the late Anna LaBlanc and Joseph Louis Bastarache Sr. After graduating from high school, he joined the Marines and was a military policeman. Joe worked for the Raleigh Police Department for 2 years, and then joined the NC Highway Patrol. Joe retired from the Highway Patrol in 1991. While with the highway patrol, Joe received many certifications and taught at the training center in Raleigh. During Joe’s tenure as a trooper he moved to Blowing Rock, as he had a great love for the mountains. During retirement in Blowing Rock, Joe enjoyed doing many activities with Sarah, his daughter. He also enjoyed many hobbies including beekeeping, woodworking, photography and cooking. Family and friends remember him for sharing his BBQ and homemade peanut brittle. Joe hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and traveled to Canada and Alaska, documenting his trips with photographs. Joe enjoyed many types of wildlife, especially birds and deer. He was a builder of rock walls/many rock walls! Joe was strong in mind and body and he will be missed by many.
    He is survived by his wife, Gail Daves Bastarache, his beloved daughter, Sarah Bastarache and fiancé Chad Dean, one sister, Rita Robert and husband Leo of State College PA, and a very special nephew and godson, Ed Robert along with several other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Bob. 
    Memorial services for Joe Bastarache will be conducted Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 2 pm at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Virginia Peurifoy. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 pm until 2 pm at the funeral home. The family respectfully requests no food or flowers. Lois Eller Hughes 
(October 26, 1938 – May 18, 2018) 

    Mrs. Lois Eller Hughes, age 79, of Rominger Road, Banner Elk, and formerly of Dean B. Eller Road, Newland, passed away Friday morning, May 18, 2018 at her home. Born October 26, 1938 Avery County, she was a daughter of Dean and Bessie Townsend Eller. Lois was a graduate of Newland High School. She was in public relations for AT&T before retirement, working in Charlotte and several western NC communities. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newland. She loved God, and was devoted to family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Lois worked tirelessly to promote a drug free community for persons with dependencies.
    Mrs. Hughes is survived by her daughter, DeeDee Hughes Rominger and husband, Gary, of Banner Elk; granddaughter, Jessica Leigh Hughes of Belews Creek; grandsons, William Garth Rominger of Banner Elk and Matthew Tyler Bissel, of Kitty Hawk; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Jayla Hughes of Belews Creek; brother, Kermit Eller and wife, Dianna, of Elk Park and sister, Kaye Greene and husband, Michael, of Lenoir; nieces, Meredith Bradshaw and husband, Kevin, of Catawba, Amanda Miller and husband, Danny, of Mooresville, Brandy Eller of Athens, GA, Jennifer Tatum and husband, Luke, of Asheville and Erica Eller McLean of Newland; nephew, Robbie Eller and wife, Jackie, of Newland; and special friends, Betty Erhart and JoeAnn Mihalyi.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Jack Hughes and sons, Jackie Dean Hughes. 
    Funeral services for Lois Eller Hughes will be conducted Sunday evening, May 20th, at 6 oclock at the First Baptist Church in Newland, officiated by Dr. Bill Jones. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 oclock, prior to services, at the church. 
    Graveside services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 oclock in the Whitaker Branch Cemetery in Newland. At other times, the family will be at the home of DeeDee and Gary Rominger, 985 Rominger Road, Banner Elk.

Ruth Greene Swift 
(January 01, 1923 – May 20, 2018) 

    Ruth Greene Swift Ruth Greene Swift, 95, of Meredell Farm Rd., Liberty, died Sunday, May 20, 2018 at her residence.
     Funeral Services, 11 AM, Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Liberty. Officiating, Pastor Travis Brock, Dr. Carl Garner. 
    
    Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 
    
    Ruth was a native of Watauga County and a longtime resident of Liberty. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 
    
    Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Willis John Swift, her parents, Dillard and Pearl Tester Greene, and eight brothers and sisters. W.J. “Billy” Teague, Sr.

September 21, 1924 – May 19, 2018

W.J. “Billy” Teague, Sr., age 93, of Rivers Edge Drive, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, May 19, 2018, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Billy was a Lover of Life and of People. He was raised in Washington D.C. and was active in Boys Club and Eastern High School Football. In WWII, he served our Country in the Army Air Corp as a Navigator and mechanic, a “Flyboy” of the Burma China Trail in a DC 3 Supply Plane. He graduated from Guilford College in 1950 and played Quarterback for the Quakers. He met & married our Mother, Marie Elliott while at Guilford. Many of their classmates remained in the Greensboro / Guilford College area.  This provided a unique experience growing up with these families who knew and loved each other so well. Dad enjoyed golf, boating and woodworking. He was a good Father and provider and always tried to look out for the needs of others. We feel blessed to have had Dad with us till age 93. Our Love to you All, Jeff & Jeannie

Billy is survived by one son, William Jefferson Teague, Jr. and wife Clare Walker Teague of Peachtree Corners, Georgia; one daughter, Jeannie Marie Teague of Boone; one granddaughter, Ashley E. Teague of Marrietta, Georgia, and one grandson, William J. Teague, III of Peachtree Corners. He is also survived by two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Elliott Teague; his father and mother, Edward L. Teague and Virginie Mae Simmers Teague, and one brother, Edward L. Teague, Jr.

Memorial services for W.J. “Billy” Teague, Sr. will be conducted Thursday afternoon, May 24, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Melanie Childers will officiate. Military graveside rites, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow the memorial service.

James E. “Jim” Love

August 12, 1929 – May 20, 2018

James E. “Jim” Love, age 88, of US Highway 421 South, Trade, Tennessee, passed away Sunday evening, May 20, 2018, at his home.

Jim was born August 12, 1929 in Trade, Tennessee, a son of the late Ira and Ella Grogan Love. He was a retired construction engineering director and a member of Trade United Methodist Church. He was member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge in Mountain City, and was a Mason for over 50 years and also a Shriner. He began his career in 1957 in Pensacola, Florida as a piping superintendent with Fluor-Daniel, retiring as projects director after 40 years of service. His career took him around the world.

Jim is survived by one son, James Elwood Love, Jr. and wife Joan Mason Love of Lawndale, North Carolina; two daughters, Rebecca Jane Love Hughes and husband Mickey of Greenville, South Carolina, and Deborah Mae Love Cruz and husband Ray of Trade; one sister, Patsy Love Cavanaugh and husband Edward of Greenville, South Carolina, and one sister-in-law, June Lookabill of Shelby. He is also survived by three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Lawrence Love; two brothers, Howard Love and an infant brother, and three sisters, Willene Blackwell, Helen Angelos, and Bernice Nielsen.

Funeral services for James E. “Jim” Love will be conducted Thursday afternoon, May 24, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Trade United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Scott Wilkes. Masonic graveside rites and entombment will follow in the Love Family Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Sylvia Trivett Hubble
June 23, 1949 – May 17, 2018

Sylvia Trivett Hubble, age 68, of Jonas Ridge, North Carolina went to be with Jesus and her parents in Heaven on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC.

She was born on June 23, 1949 in Mitchell County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Roger Trivett and Lily Vance Trivett.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; her first husband Sylvester “Roger” Clark, and her beloved pet Chico.

Sylvia was a volunteer for Linville Central Rescue Squad for many years. She also enjoyed all of her animals, Needlepoint, Flowers, Gardening, and Woodworking. She was very artistic and she enjoyed helping raise her grandchildren. She enjoyed to listen to Southern Gospel music.

Sylvia leaves behind to cherish her memory her: Husband, Hugh Hubble of Jonas Ridge, NC; Two Daughters; Elizabeth “Doodle” Wiseman of Marion, NC and Michele Niehenke of Hunker, PA; Four Sons: Lee Clark of Roan Mountain, TN, Mark (Patti) Clark of Jonas Ridge, NC, Hugh (Amy) Hubble II of Jeanette, PA, and Kenneth Hubble of Mount Pleasant, PA; Grandchildren: Sara, Lillie, and Scott Wiseman; Ashley Clark, Sarah and Nathan Niehenke; Shannon, Alex, Kenneth Jr., and Duncan Hubble; Two Brothers; Bill (Lisa) Trivett of Plumtree, NC, Charles (Brenda) Trivette of Plumtree, NC; and several nieces and nephews that she loved and to whom she was a second mother to.

Funeral Services for Sylvia Trivett Hubble will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 beginning at 1:00 pm from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with John Beach officiating. 
The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 pm until 7:00 PM on Monday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Interment will be in the Daniels Cemetery following the funeral service on Tuesday May 22, 2018.

Virginia (Ginger) Helton Frye
January 23, 1938 – May 18, 2018

Virginia (Ginger) Carolyn Helton Frye of Pineola went to be with the Lord on 05/17/2018 at 80 years of age. She was preceded in death by her mother Beulah Moody and her father James Helton and daddy James “Bud” Moody.
Virginia was honored to work in the medical profession for many years at Spruce Pine Hospital and Sloop Memorial Hospital. She also worked for three amazing doctors during her career, Dr. E.H. Smith, Dr. Bell and Dr. Baker. She loved her flower garden, reading and watching her favorite soap opera, the Young and the Restless. 
Left behind to cherish her memory are loving husband Robert Lee Frye and children Gina Frye and Kevin Frye and wife Cheri. She also leaves behind two cherished sisters, Trina Cook and husband Donnie and Revonda Deaton. Virginia also leaves four wonderful grandchildren who she was very proud of, Heather Buchanan, Ashley Buchanan, Dr. Jared Robert L. Frye and Caitlyn Frye and a very special niece Julie Cook Hopson and husband John, and two nephews Bobby Deaton and James Ray Deaton. She also leaves two brothers, Charles Helton and wife Sandra and Bobby Helton. Virginia also leaves behind her two fur babies, Shadow and Penny who she loved and cared for very much.
At her request there will be no visitation or services for Virginia until the passing of her husband then a joint service will be held. Rea Carolyn Siffring
May 16, 1931 – May 18, 2018

Rea Siffring passed peacefully on May 18th after suffering a stroke in the North Carolina mountain home of her Daughter and Son-in-Law, Jenny and Jim Fitzpatrick. She was surrounded by her family. Having frequently visited the area over the last 30 years with her Husband, Dr. Loren Siffring, this time they came to celebrate their Granddaughter’s High School Graduation.
Rea was born in Denver, CO on May 16, 1931 and Moved to Rochester, MI in 1959 where Loren opened a medical practice.
She was an avid bird watcher and traveled often with Loren on bird watching trips. 
She was active in her community and her Church. She loved the Lord and her family.
Rea was known for her hospitality. Her home was always welcoming to friends and strangers alike.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Loren, her five children and their spouses, Cory(Laurel), Wendy, Jenny (Jim), Chris (John) and David (Jesus).
She is also survived by 15 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
