Troy McGuire Passes Away Monday, Funeral Services at Austin & Barnes Set For Saturday At Noon

May 17, 2013. Roger Troy McGuire of Todd passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 13, at the age of 47.

Along with being an accomplished carpenter, Troy was also an excellent banjo player, instrumental in initiating the ever-popular Friday night music jams at the Todd General Store.

Born in Anderson, S.C., Troy moved to Boone after finishing high school in northern Virginia. He loved his family, friends, banjo and old-time music and the heritage of the mountains, according to his obituary. 

In honor of Troy, VPC Builders, in its most recent monthly newsletter, wrote this eulogy:

“VPC Builders is devastated by the loss of Troy McGuire. An inspiration to us all, his positive attitude and constant smile will be missed around our office every day.

Our community mourns the unexpected passing of this 7th generation native. He was often found in Todd, NC where his exceptional banjo playing was constantly heard throughout the store. In addition to helping to initiate Friday Night Music Jams, he was also an accomplished carpenter and valued member of VPC Builders. We are very grateful for the chance we had to get to know this special man.”  

Troy is survived by his son, Grayson McGuire of Jacksonville, FL; his father Phil McGuire (De’an) of Boone his sister, Jenny McGuire Blevins (Alan) of Troutman, NC; brother, Phillip McGuire of Asheville, NC; by his beloved nieces Macy Dressler, Bryn McGuire; nephews Marshall McAleer; Ben Blevins, and Ethan McGuire; great niece, Layla Dressler and by his special friend Christie Fredenburg.

Troy was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Maness McGuire; and, his grandparents Marshall and Macy Manass and Roger and Ala McGuire;

Memorial services for Troy take place Saturday, May 18, at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel at noon. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. There will be no graveside services.
