BigDavis, DouglasMr. Douglas Howard Davis, 56, of Todd, passed away Monday morning, October 5, 2015 at his home. Born May 30, 1959 in Watauga County, he was a son of Howard and Angeleen Worley Davis. Doug was graduate of Watauga High School and was retired from Ferguson Plumbing.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Presnell Davis, one son, Eric Davis and wife Jillian of West Jefferson, one granddaughter, Olivia Johnson Davis, his parents, Howard and Angeleen Worley Davis of Todd, three brothers, Krandall Radar Davis of Crumpler, Johnie Davis and wife April, Cory Davis all of Todd, two sisters, Deb Stephens and husband David of Todd and Kim Miller and husband Ronnie of Fleetwood, and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Mr. Douglas Howard Davis will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 oclock at the Blackburn Tabernacle Church. Officiating will be Rev. J. D. Walton. Burial will follow in the Graham cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 oclock until 8 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helen Cafaro, 88, of Milton Heirs Road, Boone, was reunited with her Lord, her husband and beloved dog Yancey, Sunday evening, Oct. 4, 2015.

Mrs. Cafaro was born March 1, 1927 in New York, New York. She was a retired seamstress in the clothing industry. She was a member of St. Elizabeth of the Hill Country Catholic Church.

Mrs. Cafaro is survived by two sons, Joe Cafaro and wife Cindy, and Gustave Cafaro; two step-grandchildren, Brandy Roberts of Columbus, Georgia and Adam Rice and wife Emily of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and two step-great-grandchildren, Samantha and Sally Roberts, Columbus, Georgia. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony “Tony” Cafaro, and her father and mother.

Graveside services and inurnment will be conducted Wednesday morning, October 7, 2015, at 10:00 o’clock, at Saint Elizabeth of the Hill Country Catholic Church Columbarium.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, October 7, 2015, from 5:00 until 7:00 at their residence, 200 Eden Close in Boone.

Jason Carl Buckner (Jan. 14, 1984 – Oct. 4, 2015)

Jason Carl Buckner, 31, of Thompson Hollow Road, Vilas, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 4, 2015 at his home.

Jason was born Jan. 14, 1984 in Watauga County to Raymond Buckner and the late Cleta Coffey Buckner. He attended Willowdale Baptist Church. Jasons life and love was involved around his wife, Nichole and his daughter, Carlie. He loved spending time outdoors hiking, swimming, and sharing special times with Carlie and family.

Jason is survived by his daughter, Carlie Madison Buckner of the home; father, Raymond Buckner of Blowing Rock; sister, Kimberly Greene and husband, Mark, of Vilas; two brothers, Doug Buckner and wife, Betty, of Zionville and Lloyd Buckner and wife, Patricia, of Blowing Rock; mother-in-law, Regina Triplett and husband, Jonathan, of Zionville; father-in-law, Danny Presnell and wife, Lola, of Boone; seven nieces, Crystal Harmon of Zionville, Amanda Matherly of Elizabethton, TN, Sabrina Buckner of Winston-Salem, Gemma Greene of Vilas, Elizabeth and Rebecca Buckner of Blowing Rock, and Kimberly Trivette of Vilas; and five nephews, Gage and Gavin Greene and Joey Trivette, all of Vilas, and Wesley and Ethan Harmon of Zionville; and his special family, Jenny Wilson, Charlie Wilson, Brenda Kailin, Carolyn Pasley, Bonnie Faulkner, Trudy Thompson, Maude Thompson, Rusty and Becky Trivette and Bob and Patti Perry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nichole Presnell Buckner; his mother, Cleta Coffey Buckner, grandparents, Floyd and Nellie Coffey and Lloyd and Ella Buckner; uncle, Earl Buckner; and aunts, Esther Buckner, Grace Coffey and Neal Boucher.

Memorial services for Jason Carl Buckner will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 7, 2015, at 2 oclock, at Willowdale Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Eugene Braswell. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 oclock, prior to services, at Willowdale Baptist Church. Graveside services will be private.

Mrs. Lucretia Hill Riker, 76, of 620 Homestead Drive, Vilas, died Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Life Care Center Of Banner Elk.

Mrs. Riker lived and worked most of her life in Peapack, New Jersey and Sarasota, Florida before moving to North Carolina in 2003. 

Mrs. Riker is survived by her husband, Robert Riker, three sons, Jonathan Burt and wife Carlah of Lebanon, New Jersey, Christopher Burt and wife Trudy of Alpharetta, Georgia and Russell Burt and friend Carol Yin of Glendale, California, two sisters, Judith Brush and husband Donald and Louise Davis and husband David all of Norfolk, Connecticut. She is also survived by two grandsons and two granddaughters.

A memorial service for Mrs. Lucretia Hill Riker will be held at a later date.

Carolyn Canupp (Jan. 9, 1940 – Oct. 2, 2015)

Carolyn Burleson Canupp, 75, of Minneapolis passed away on October 2, 2015 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

A native of Avery County, she was born January 9, 1940 a daughter of the late Oscar and Florence Young Burleson.

She was a graduate of the Appalachian State University in Boone, a member and Sunday School Teacher of the Minneapolis Methodist Church.

A sweet and loving lady, Carolyn was a friend to everyone she met and was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor or friend, especially her family. She retired from the Avery County School System where she spent 30 years Teaching, retiring from Freedom Trail Elementary. She was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators and the National Educators Association. She volunteered for the Cranberrian Corporation for many years.

Carolyn has left to cherish her memory her: husband of 53 years, Johnny Canupp of the home; sons, John Clifton Canupp, and his wife, Lesley, of Minneapolis, Phillip Mark Canupp of Leesburg, FL; grandsons, John Michael Canupp and Milton James Canupp, both of Minneapolis; brothers, Ted Burleson, and his wife, Janine, of Canton, OH, Ralph Burleson, and his wife, June, of Canton, OH, David Lee Vance, and his wife, Trina, of Leesburg, FL; sisters, Louise Guy of Flint, Mich and Faynita Johnson of Minneapolis.

Funeral Services for Carolyn Canupp will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Preston Thomas and Rev. David Hobson officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 pm until the service hour on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be private.

Patricia Brown Holman, 67, of Cranberry Springs Road, the Fleetwood Community, passed away Friday, Oct. 2, 2015.

She was the daughter of the late Olen and Lillie Isaacs Brown. She was preceded in death by her son, Danny Craig Holman and a daughter, Patricia Lynn Brown. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Sue Rominger.

She is survived by her companion, Jerry Pennell, one daughter, Diane Stansberry of Elk Park, two sons, Richard Holman of Sugar Grove and Michael Holman of Elk Park. Three brothers, Dean Brown and wife Susie of Vilas, Gene Brown and wife Emogene of Vilas, and Jim Brown and wife Shirley of Zionville. Four sisters, Mary Beavers and Virginia Godfrey both of Hendersonville, Betty Jo Roper of Kernersville and Joyce Dollar and husband Bud of Vilas.

She is also survived by four grandsons, Anthony Trivette and wife Erica, Jake Stansberry, Hunter and Matthew Holman, and two great-grandsons, Little Mat Holman and Luke Trivette.

Funeral services for Patricia Brown Holman will be conducted Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home chapel. Rev. Greg Tibbett will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, prior to the service from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Vanderpool Baptist Church Cemetery.

Donald Burl Norris, 73, of Moses Springs Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 1, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Born Jan. 25, 1942 in Watauga County, he was a son of Hoy and Lizzie Williams Norris. Mr. Norris was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burl enjoyed camping and fishing, but most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends. He was a contractor and builder who designed and sold houses.

Mr. Norris is survived by his wife of 29 years, Glenda Matheson Norris of the home; son, Mitchell Norris and wife, Kelly, of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Robbin Dinbokowitz and husband, Bobby, Starrla Rogos and husband, Aaron, and Krystall Bell and husband, Randy, all of Arizona; two step-daughters, Beth Berry and husband, Jeff, of Boone and Deana Lipford and husband, Coy, of Zionville; eleven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burl was preceded in death by his parents, Hoy and Lizzie Williams Norris; brother, Kenneth Norris, and sisters, Sally Norris Brown and Eula Norris Vines.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 3rd, 2015, at 2 oclock, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Gary Watson. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 oclock prior to services, at the church. Graveside services and burial will follow in the Norris-Tabernacle Cemetery.

June Marie Plane (Jan. 17, 1929

Plane, June Marie (nee Wollner) passed into God’s arms on Oct. 1, 2015.

She was a native Miamian, born Jan. 17, 1929 to her pioneer parents C. Ernst and Mildred Wollner. she attended schools in both Miami Beach and Miami. June graduated Miami Edison Senior High School in 1948 and was a member of the Miami Edison “Over the Hill Gang.”

In 1950, June married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Plane and eventually settled in Miami Beach. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past September. June worked in the banking profession for several years before becoming a stay at home mother for her three children.

After her husband’s retirement from the City of Miami Beach, they built a second home in Blowing Rock and divided their time between there and Miami Beach.

In addition to her loving and devoted husband, June is survived by son, Robert Plane Jr., his wife Barbara, and his son Sean, of Blowing Rock NC; son, Charles Plane, his wife Linda, and their son Daniel, of Boone, NC; and daughter, April Plane Teboe, her husband Glenn, and their two daughters, Cindy and Amber, of Miami Beach, FL.

Friends may visit on Wednesday, October 7 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, 6400 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, FL 33024 there will be a Tributes of a Lifetime Service at 7:30 pm followed by a reception at the funeral home.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 10, 2015, at 1:00 o’clock, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

David Roy Hege (Aug. 26, 1946
- Sept. 30, 2015)

David Roy Hege of Jonas Ridge passed away peacefully on Sept. 30 at the age of 69.

HegeMr. Hege received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia on 1968. He was an active member of the Demosthenian Literary Society while at UGA, and later went on the receive a Bachelor of Law Degree from Atlanta Law School in 1973.

Mr Hege served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant, USAR military intelligence. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious service in the performance of his duties in Vietnam during the period May 1969-March 1970. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 60.

Following his military service, Mr Hege practiced law in Tifton, GA for 29 years. During his career, he was a Referee of the Juvenile Court of Tift County from 1974-1976 and served as Solicitor, State Court of Tift County from 1979-1988.

Through all of his accomplishments, the Church meant the most to Mr Hege. He was ordained an elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) in 1989. In this capacity, he held numerous leadership positions in First Presbyterian Church, Tifton, GA and Crossnore Presbyterian Church, Crossnore, NC., including Clerk of Sessions. His most cherished service role was working with the youth groups at both churches. He was a member of Crossnore Presbyterian at the time of his death.

Mr Hege is described by family and friends as having a special personality that enabled and encouraged though his vast intelligence and leadership. He was always there to guide, to lead, and lend a hand. He was a teacher, mentor, and seeker who loved to make outrageous statements designed to elicit reaction and provoke conversation. He used great knowledge and gentleness to energize thought within all people he encountered and push loved ones to reach beyond their boundaries. 

He was an avid reader who loved conversations about God, about humans, and about all things that matter. He loved nature and found the beauty in all living things.

Mr Hege was an irreplaceable friend, husband, father, and presence that was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Mr Hege is survived by his wife Mary Jo of 39 years; daughter Tamara Hege Prezalar of Seattle, WA; sister and brother in law Sharon and Ken Ackerson of Marion City, PA; Cecile Hege, sister in law, of Tucker, GA; Uncles Don Hege of Portsmouth, VA and Gerald Hege of Whiteville, NC; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

His parents Lois Laird Hege and Roy Clifton Hege and brother Alan Hege preceded him in death. 

A memorial service will be held October 10th, 11:00 am at Crossnore Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be given to the ALS Association in Memory of Mr. Hege.

Ann Collins Taylor, 74, of Wild Acres Road, Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at her home.

Born July 31, 1941 in Carter County, Tenn., she was a daughter of Charles and Hettie Cretsinger Collins. Church and family was her passion. Ann loved baking and cooking for family, friends, and community events. For more than 50 years, Mrs. Taylor was a youth leader and taught Sunday school at Foscoe Christian Church. She dearly loved making quilts and blankets to donate to Project Linus.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband of 59 years, Denver Taylor; son, Dean Taylor and wife, Darlene, of Banner Elk; daughter, Michelle Rupard and husband, Paul, of Boone; six grandchildren, Deanna Friley and husband, Kevin, of Charlotte, Erika Higgins and husband, Rory, of Stokesdale; Jordan Trivette of Boone, Tyler Taylor of Banner Elk, Jacqueline Brooke Trivette of Boone, and Jarrett Pritchard of Burnsville; sister, Charlsie Lyle of Johnson City, TN; and brother, Orlin Collins of Gray, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Taylor; and brother, Bob Collins.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 3, at 2 oclock, at Foscoe Christian Church on Church Hollow Road, officiated by Pastor Dan Burks and Pastor Ken Caswell. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 oclock, prior to services, at the church. Graveside services will be private.
