Robert C Schwebke, age 85 of Banner Elk, North Carolina passed away Tuesday morning August 18 th 2015.

A native of Miami Florida, Mr. Schwebke was born July 18th 1930, the son of Harry C. Schwebke (of Miami) and Harriet Helseth Schwebke (of Ft Pierce). Mr. Schwebke in addition to being a well respected business owner in Miami served in the United States Navy, was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Mahi Shrine.

His business interest included Schwebke & Associates, Schwebke-Shiskin Surveyors, Busy Bee Car Wash and most notably Mako Marine, the manufacturer of Mako fishing boats which he founded in 1967.

In addition Mr. Schwebke spent considerable time in North Carolina where he owned and operated the Chalet Motor Lodge in Little Switzerland; he developed “Tynecastle” in Banner Elk and was the proprietor of Pappy’s BBQ.

Mr. Schwebke was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Judy, two sons Robert C. Schwebke Jr. “Cliff” & his wife Tabitha and Brett Schwebke & his wife Samantha all of Banner Elk and two daughters Samantha Wotell & husband Chris of Banner Elk and Roxanne Saltman & husband Mark of Zionville and one nephew Harry Helseth of Ft Pierce Florida. In addition Mr. Schwebke is survived by 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mr. Schwebke was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Helen Helseth and her son Chuck 

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, August 21st 2015 at 2:00 o’ clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation for family and friends will begin at 12:30. Military graveside rites and burial will be provided by the United States Navy, American Legion Post 130, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 with Masonic graveside rites to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Dr. Clyde DeVere Robbins passed away Sunday at his home in Valle Crucis. Dr. Robbins was a retired Navy Captain, and worked for 17 years at Appalachian State University as the Director of Design and Construction.

He is survived by one daughter, Katherine Davidson of Indianapolis, Ind., granddaughters Mariah Sexton and husband Eric of Indianapolis, IN, Brandi Matthews of Indianapolis, Ind., and grandson Channing Matthews of Atlanta, Ga., and three great grandchildren, Mackenzie Matthews, Liam Sexton and Lanie Sexton, all of Indianapolis, Ind.

“Doc” is survived by his Special Valle Crucis Family – Don and Marcia Lusk, Heidi Lusk Robertson and husband Brock, and Holly Lusk Powell and husband Seth all of Valle Crucis, NC.

He is also survived by his most faithful and beloved dogs Misty and Mogli.

He was preceded in death by his patents, Claude Robbins and his mother, Erma Marvin Robbins and one son, Scott Robbins.

A Celebration of life service for Dr. Robbins will be held at the Inn at Crestwood on Thursday Aug 20 from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock. Clydes favorite sweets and beverages will be served. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 130.

Mary K. Cornett, 73, of State Farm Road, Boone, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at her home.

Mary is survived by one sister, Martha C. Phillips and husband Bill of Zionville; one aunt, Charlotte C. Nichols of Kernersville, and her caregiver and niece, Joyce Pierce and husband Tim of Zionville. She is also survived by eight nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred McCoy Cornett and Bonnie Ragan Cornett Shaw; one sister, Pauline Ward, three brothers, Albert, Ellard and Tommy Cornett.

A private funeral service for Mary K. Cornett will be conducted Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock at Mt. Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum. Reverend Tim Pierce will officiate.

Leona Bond Harris Cotton (June 20, 1916

Mrs. Leona Bond Harris Cotton, 99, of Stiner Road, Sharps Chapel, Tenn., a former resident of the Bamboo Community, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015.

Mrs. Cotton was a daughter of the late Roy Bond and Roxie Harrison Bond. She was a member of the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church and an active member of the Union County Senior Citizens Center in Sharps Chapel.

Mrs. Cotton is survived by one step-daughter, Joyce Hopkins and husband Wayne Hopkins, Sr.; step-grandson, Wayne Hopkins, Jr., and wife Christina, and step-great-grandson, Ryan and Melissa Hopkins, all of Sharps Chapel, Tenn. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Holland Cotton and Morris Harris, her brother Jack Bond, and sisters Edith, Margaret and Louise.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leona Bond Harris Cotton will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, at 1:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 1:00 o’clock.

Officiating will be Pastor Bud Russell. Burial will follow in the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Anderson was born July 9, 1922 in Mount Clemmons, Michigan, a son of the late Earl and Caroline Beard Anderson. He was a retired builder and developer in Lauderdale By The Sea, Florida and served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Anderson was the youngest elected Town Commissioner in Lauderdale By The Sea.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Kathleen Murdock Anderson of the home; four daughters, Tim Watson and husband Bob of Raleigh, Leslie Ducassi and husband Henry of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Robin Anderson of Boone, and Chris Carrigan and husband Ford of Charlotte, and one son, Ken Anderson, Jr. and wife Lisa of Boone. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Messenger. 

A Memorial Service for Kenneth A. Anderson will be conducted Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Officiating will be Dr. Larry Young. 

The family will receive friends, Saturday afternoon, following the Memorial Service, at the church.

Robert G. Shipley, Sr. (June 23, 1912

Robert Gray Shipley, Sr., 103, agricultural and educational leader, of Vilas, NC passed away peacefully on August 14, 2015 surrounded by family.

Mr. Shipley was born June 23, 1912 in Valle Crucis, NC. He spent his youth in Valle Crucis and in Wallace, VA. 

In 1929 he entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), working his way through college and graduating in 1933 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Dairy Science.

He began a 44-year career teaching vocational agriculture, as well as a career in farming that spanned more than 80 years of raising cattle, tobacco, and other livestock and crops.

In 1940, he received his Master’s Degree in Animal Husbandry from Ohio State University and accepted work as an agriculture extension agent in Grayson County, VA., where he met the love of his life, Agnes Davis. They married in 1942. In 1943, Robert entered the Army Air Corps, serving as a gunnery instructor and with a hydroponics detachment on Ascension Island.

Following World War II, Agnes and Robert reared three children on the family farm in Vilas. 

His social conscience, passion for education, generous spirit, and servant leadership led to his participation in and recognition from numerous local and national professional, civic and church organizations.

He was a strong steward for God’s earth, animals, crops, and flowers, as well as family, community, and church. Each of these has benefited from his strong grip and sound guidance. Many former students, grandchildren and colleagues will long remember the warm grip of his large hand, his sage counsel, good humor, and wise sayings. His efforts to help students of all ages succeed, in both the classroom and life, will be one of his enduring legacies.

Mr. Shipley was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; parents, William Edwin and Minnie Woodie Shipley; infant daughter, Carol Shipley and six siblings: Ester and husband Claude Perry, Anna Mae and husband Tom Belk, Virginia and husband Paul Ward, Ruth and husband Foster Bryant; Jim Shipley and wife Henrietta; and Joe Shipley.

Mr. Shipley is survived by his children: Agnes Gray Shipley Moore and husband David, of Greensboro; Robert Gray Shipley, Jr. and wife Virginia, of Raleigh; Janie Davis Shipley and husband Michael Hammig, of Seneca, SC; Grandchildren: Natalie Shipley Smith and husband Brian, of Greensboro; Angela Shipley Risk and husband James Jeffrey, of Belmont; David McDaniel Moore III and wife Hannah, of Alexandria, VA; Robert Gray Shipley III of Birmingham, AL; Joseph Gray Moore and wife Christina, of Greensboro; and Laurel Davis Hammig and husband Joseph Yanci of Woodbridge, VA; nine great-grandchildren, six nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law, Richard Weakley, of Richmond Virginia.

Roger “Carroll” Hicks, 68, of Elk Park passed away on Aug. 13, 2015 at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, he was born July 2, 1947 a son of the late Norman Paul and Elizabeth Fields Hicks.

He was a member of the Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ.

Born June 25, 1926 in Watauga County, he was a son of the late Valentine and Bertha Ward Presnell. Mr. Presnell was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

He is survived by five children; Lois Evans and husband Ed of Boone, Janet Snyder and husband Michael of Gray, Tennessee, Maxie Presnell of York, South Carolina, Mark Presnell and Donna of McGrady, and Carla Presnell and Tacci of Ohio, twelve grandchildren; April Greene, Stephanie Kennedy, Candice Cook, Caleb Cook, Melanie Porter, Josh Canter, Emily Jones, Kristin Canter, Megan Presnell, Matthew Presnell, Miranda Presnell, and Izzy Smith sixteen great grandchildren, and one sister, Ann Presnell Wilson of Lexington, NC. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Isaacs Presnell.

Leona Braswell Moldenhauer, 102, of Crossnore, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Gaither Braswell and the late Dorothy Sprenger Braswell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Moldenhauer.

She was a graduate of Newland High School, Crossnore Business School, Berea College and Catawba College. She retired from the Public School System, where she had served as a Teacher for many years.

Leona was a member of the Crossnore Presbyterian Church and enjoyed piano, sewing, cooking, gardening, reading and decorative needlework.

She leaves behind her children, Paul M. Moldenhauer, and his wife, Karen, of Stuttgart, AR; Mary Louise Aldridge, and her husband, William, of Pineola, NC; grandsons, Jonathan C. Moldenhauer of Fayetteville, AR and Henry H.M. Moldenhauer of Stuttgart, AR.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 14, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Services to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from the Crossnore Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Kathy Campbell and Dennis Quackenboss officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials in Mrs. Moldenhauer’s memory may be made to the Catawba College or the Berea College.

Julie was born April 9, 1965 in Watauga County, a daughter of Willie R. Combs and the late Judy Mast Combs. She was a food services supervisor for Appalachian State University and a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Julie is survived by her husband, Tony E. Reary of the home; one daughter, Deanna Reary of Sugar Grove; her father, Willie Combs of Sugar Grove; three sisters, Ginger Hale and husband Terry of Zionville, Karen Combs of Sugar Grove, and Michelle Combs of Boone, and one brother, Willie Keith Combs and wife Dina of Sugar Grove. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Julie Combs Reary will be conducted Monday afternoon, August 10, 2015, at 2:30 PM, at Green Valley Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:30 until 2:30 PM. Officiating will be Reverend Eric Cornett and Reverend Derick Wilson.

Burial will follow in Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Kathleen White Cole, 85, of Baird’s Creek Road, Vilas, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015, at her home.

Born July 13, 1930 in Watauga County, Kathleen was a daughter of Ernest and Beulah Teaster White. She was a longtime member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Kathleen spent her life loving and caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many friends, and every animal that ever came to her door.

Mrs. Cole is survived by her children, Mike Cole and wife Elizabeth, of Boone, Bobby Cole and friend, Lillian, of Vilas, Jerry White and wife, Donna, of Taylorsville, and Roberta ‘Jeannie’ Davis of Valle Crucis; five grandchildren, Marlin, Kevin, Scott, Kelly and James; six great-grandchildren, Zack, Lindsey, Cole, Andrew, Tanner and Hailey; brother, Willie White of Winston-Salem; special friend, Ivalean Stewart; and her caregiver and friend, Nona Noblett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cole; brother, A.E. White; and three sisters, Betty Maltba, Peggy White, and Barbara Hatten.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 9th, at 2 PM, at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Wynn Greer and Rev. Melvin Hodges. Graveside services will follow in the White Cemetery.

A private graveside celebration of life service was conducted Monday, August 10, 2015 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Blowing Rock.

Mike was born September 22, 1953 in Watauga County, a son of the late George W. Greene and Lola Norris Greene. He was a retired employee of the Town of Boone, and a member of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church.

Mike is survived by one daughter, Deborah Greene of Boone; two sons, Richard Greene of Boone and Scott Greene and wife Robin of Avery County; one grandson, Jackson Greene of Avery County; two great-nieces, Sierra and Hannah Adcox, both of Boone; one great-nephew, Christopher Adcox of Boone; special aunt, Mary Helen Greene of Boone, and his girlfriend, Linda Young of Boone.

He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Ward Greene.

Funeral services for George Michael “Mike” Greene will be conducted Saturday morning, August 8, 2015, at 11:00 o’clock, at Howard’s Creek Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Chris Reinolds, Reverend Max West, Reverend Edwin McKinney, and Pastor Joe London. Burial will follow in Howard’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Crisp Gragg, 90, of Leason Carol Gragg Rd. went to be with the Lord on August 5, 2015.

Born on July 19, 1925 in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Bessie Crisp.

Along with her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her: husband, Russell “Ted” Gragg; a son, Norbert “Mickey” Hugh Gragg; 7 brothers; four sisters; one great granddaughter.

First and foremost, Margaret loved her Lord, followed by a deep love for all of her family. She enjoyed reading her bible and talking to people about serving the Lord and all of his many blessings.

Margaret has left to cherish her memory: five daughters, Beverly Brown of the home, Victoria Gragg of Hickory, Yvonne Waters of Lenoir, Joann Gipson of Linville, Nina Gragg of Linville; 1 son, Rev. Donald Gragg of Jonas Ridge; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Margaret Crisp Gragg will be conducted on Sunday, August 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Gragg and Mr. Daniel Starnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Madison Gragg Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 8th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Orrie E. Dotson, age 85, of West Jefferson, passed away Tuesday, August 04, 2015 at Margate Health & Rehabilitation.

Born March 6, 1930 in Lisben, Ohio, he was a son of the late Orrie and Clara Rupp Dotson. Orrie was a US Army Veteran, who served during the Korean War. He was a member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church and was retired from General Motors. Orrie was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed talking with children, working with his hands, and repairing watches and jewelry.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Loretta Spears Dotson, three daughters; Diana Davis, Marsha Bunting, and Lisa Thomas, five grandchildren; Delayne Davis, Carlyene Zinkiewicz, Ben Thomas, Brittany Winters, and Aaron Bunting, one great grandson, Lucias Zinkiewicz, and one sister, Clara Dotson.

Memorial services for Mr. Orrie Dotson will be conducted Friday evening, August 7 at the Bald Mountain Baptist Church at 7 oclock. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 6 until 7 oclock.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Bald Mountain Baptist Church Childrens Department, 1453 Bald Mountain Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
