Denise Morton (Dec. 5, 1961 – Nov. 3, 2015)

Denise Morton, of Banner Elk, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born December 5, 1961 a daughter of Franklin Buchanan and the late Reba Norwood Buchanan.

She worked as a Ward Clerk and CNA for Life Care Center in Banner Elk for 30 years and worked at Blowing Rock Hospital prior to that.

Denise enjoyed crocheting, painting, going to eat with family and friends and cooking.

Along with her mother, Denise was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Denise has left to cherish her memory her: son, Lucas Morton of Banner Elk; father, Franklin Buchanan and wife Alveda of Newland; sister, Denita Stevens and husband Rick of Banner Elk; nephews, Josh Stevens and Cody Stevens both of Banner Elk.

Funeral services for Marsha Denise Morton will be conducted on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Brent Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Matney Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Lilly Ward Harmon (Dec. 16, 1955

Lilly Ward Harmon, 59, of McGuire Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 2, 2015, at Watauga Medical Center.

Lilly was born Dec. 16, 1955 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Noah Enoch Ward and Addie Ward. She was a former employee of Jenkins Realty and a member of Sandy Flats Baptist Church. 

Lilly is survived by four daughters, Addie Fitts and husband Jay of Sugar Grove, Amy Adcox and husband Christopher of Boone, Melissa Harmon of Johnson City, and Karen Harmon of Vilas; one son, Benjamin Harmon and wife April; one brother, Bobby Ward and wife Della of Deep Gap, and her special dog, “Tootsie.”

She is also survived by six granddaughters, six grandsons, and a number of nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Clay Harmon; her father and mother, Noah Enoch Ward and Addie Ward; two brothers, Noah and Jimmy Ward, and two sisters, Mary Alice Greene and Louise Bryan.

Funeral services for Lilly Ward Harmon will be conducted Thursday afternoon, Nov. 5, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock, at Sandy Flats Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Max West. Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Community Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

James Stephen Bracey (Sept. 2, 1956 – Nov. 2, 2015)

James Stephen Bracey, 59, of Blowing Rock, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2015 in Watauga County after a brief illness.

He was born in Fayetteville, NC on September 2, 1956 to W. Richard Bracey and Anna Hart Bracey. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elkin, NC. Stephen spent his childhood in Laurel Hill, NC and Mt Gilead, NC. The family moved to Avery County in the late ‘60s where Stephen graduated from Avery County High School. He also attended Lees-McRae College.

Stephen had a true love of life. He was a member of the Championship Clogging Team under “Miss Kay” Wilkins while in high school, continued his love of dancing with the Katydids, and could always be counted on to light up the dance floor. A popular ZUMBA instructor, he taught classes at Mountain Glen and Linville Land Harbors. Outdoor recreation held his interest, especially canoeing on the New River with his friends. Stephen was a lifelong UNC supporter and never passed up an opportunity to cheer on the Tar Heels.

Stephen is survived by his parents, a daughter, Caroline Elizabeth Bracey, his brothers William Richard Bracey Jr and Stanley C. Bracey (Catherine), and two nieces, Emily Rose Bracey and Mary Clare Sugg Bracey.

Fred W. Johnson (Aug. 23, 1926 – Nov. 1, 2015)

Mr. Fred William Johnson, 89, of Meat Camp Road, Todd, passed away Sunday Nov. 1, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center. Born Aug. 23, 1926 in Ashe County, he was a son of the late James Mack and Martha Greer Johnson. Fred was a farmer and a member of Elk Knob Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Elithe Ellison Johnson, and a number of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Mack and Martha Greer Johnson and four sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Fred William Johnson will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. J. C. Greene. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 o’clock until 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. J.D. Franklin, 69, of 153 Zeb Street, Boone, passed away Sunday morning, November 1, 2015, at his home. 

J.D. was born November 21, 1945 in Illinois, a son of the late Goble and Adell Franklin. He was a retired employee of Appalachian State University.

J.D. is survived by his wife, Maxie Shull Franklin of the home; one daughter, Ellesha Franklin Hicks and husband Roger of Boone; one grandson, Caleb J. Hicks, and one granddaughter, Jettie L. Hicks, both of Boone; two sisters, June Barker and husband Don of Blowing Rock, and Jimmie Knoll of Blowing Rock; one brother-in-law, Jerry Shull of Boone; three sisters-in-law, Pat Shore, Nancy Berry, and Gloria Parlier, all of Boone, and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Joanna “Jojo” Shore of Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Franklin; two sisters, Vaughdean Pruess and Virginia Bowdre, and his mother-in-law, Jettie Shull. 

A memorial service for J.D. Franklin will be conducted Friday afternoon, November 6, 2015, at 1:00 o’clock, at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. Officiating will be Reverend Jerry Shull.

The family will receive friends at the Franklin residence, 153 Zeb Street, Boone, at any time.

She is preceded in death by her father, Benny Taylor.

She was a loving vibrant mother and wife whose smile would brighten any room. She enjoyed scrapbooking, picture taking, cooking and spending time with her family and friends at the lake. She was an avid supporter of the Viking Nation Booster, and loved to watch her children participate in sports.

Left to cherish her memory are her: mother, Debra Harden of Newland; husband, Jeff Puckett of the home; son, Jeffrey Puckett of the home; daughter, Charley Puckett of the home; paternal grandmother, Lavola Taylor of Newland; maternal grandmother, Lorena Goodman of Newland: aunt, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends whom she will greatly be missed by.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 5 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A service to celebrate her life will begin at 3:00 pm Thursday in the Grandfather Chapel. Interment will follow in the Puckett Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Levi MacIntosh, Luke Crowe, Jacob Waldrop, Austin Phillips, James Stewart, Trey Jackson, Dalton Tennant, and Dylan Bauer.

Dana C. Clawson, 59, of 483 Clawson Street, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, October 31, 2015, at his home.

Dana was born May 30, 1956 in Watauga County, a son of the late John Bynum Clawson and Ruby May Greene Clawson. He was owner and operator of Com-Tech Communications in Boone, where a had a deep appreciation for his patrons.

Dana is survived by two sons, Nathaniel Clawson and wife Beth of Bloomington, Indiana, and Chris Clawson of Boone; one brother, Wayne Clawson and wife Joy of Boone; two grandsons, Max Clawson and Kirin Clawson of Bloomington, and one granddaughter, Isabel Clawson of Bloomington.

A memorial service for Dana C. Clawson will be held at a later date.

Goldean Potter Stines, 83, of Elk Park passed away on October 31, 2015 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital.

A native of Carter County, she was born Aug. 4, 1932 a daughter of the late James Potter and the late Lena Sheets Potter.

She attended Blue Ridge Mountain Church in Elk Park and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, prayer warrior who loved life, the church, and her family.

Along with her parents, Goldean was preceded in death by her: son, Jesse Stines; brothers, J.D. Potter, Troy Potter, Walter Potter; sister, Frances Potter, Anna Mae Heaton, Jettie Potter, Noralee Potter, Sarah Potter, Velma Potter, and Orpha Potter.

Goldean has left to cherish her memory: her husband, David Eugene Stines of Elk Park; daughters, Carolyn McKinney, and husband, Jeff of Roan Mountain, TN, Rebecca Dellinger of Lenoir; sons, Don Stines, and wife, Evelyn of Elk Park, David G. Stines, and wife, Melissa of Elk Park; daughter in law, Kathy Stines of Elk Park; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren (and one on the way); several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Goldean Stines will be conducted on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Mountain Church with Bro. Harold Mash officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until the service hour, Monday at the church.

Marvin David Trivette (June 12, 1960 – Oct. 30, 2015)

Marvin David Trivette, 55, of Andy Hicks Road, Banner Elk, passed away Friday afternoon, October 30, 2015, surrounded by family and friends at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Born June 12, 1960 in Avery County, Marvin was a son of Lemmie Frank and Clara Hicks Trivette. He served as a deacon of Clarks Creek Baptist Church. A master craftsman and carpenter, Marvin owned and operated T & M Construction of NC, Inc. since 1989. Many of his clients became close friends and were like family. Marvin loved his family, his church, and above all, the Lord. He cherished spending time with his family and especially being ‘Pa-Paw to his ‘little pumpkin’ Aubrey. Always trustworthy and dependable, Marvin proudly treated everyone equally and was always ready to drop any project to assist someone in need.

He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Mary Accetta Trivette; son, Brandon David Trivette of the home; daughter, Stephanie Trivette Platt and husband, Joshua, granddaughter, Aubrey Ann Platt and baby Platt to arrive in April, all of Sugar Grove; sisters, Janice Coffey and husband, Howard, of Clemmons, and Betty Trivette of Lexington; brothers, Rev. Richard Trivette and wife, Margaret, and Dean Trivette and wife, Pauline, all of Banner Elk, and Roy Trivette and wife, Connie, of Lexington; two aunts, Addie Maynard and Georgia Ward, both of Sugar Grove; and his extended family and a number of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemmie Frank and Clara Hicks Trivette; nephews, Stevie Trivette and Justin Accetta; great nephew, Nathan Bivens and mother-in-law, Ruby Harmon Accetta and father-in-law, Joseph Accetta.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 8, at 2 PM at Clarks Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor David Lunceford, Rev. Richard Trivette, Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. David Testerman. Graveside services will follow at the Trivette Family Cemetery.

Steven was born May 1, 1969 in Hampton, Virginia, a son of Curtis M. Mull, Jr. and Sandra Lee Haughwout Mull. He was an inventory control specialist for Revcar.

Steven is survived by his wife, Diane Michelle Henderson Mull of Raleigh; two sons, Aaron and Jordan Mull of Raleigh; his parents, Curtis and Sandra Mull of Lenoir; and one sister, Deborah Dew and husband Harry of Clayton.

A memorial service for Steven Curtis Mull will be conducted Sunday, November 1, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at Deerfield United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Wes Austin.
