IvaLee Oakes, D. March 2, 2012.

Unita IvaLee Oakes, 88, of Raccoon Lane, Crossnore, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Life Care Center of Banner Elk.
She was born, April 9, 1923 inCaldwellCounty, a daughter of the late Henderson and Mary Etta Coffey Gragg. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruel Defate Oakes, four brothers, and four sisters.

She leaves behind her children: Wayne Defate Oakes of Baltimore, MD, Dennis Ray Oakes of Baltimore, MD, Joseph Steven Oakes of Winchester, VA, Billy Edward Oakes of the home, Timothy Eugene Oakes of Baltimore, MD, Eileen Eunita Thompson of Baltimore, MD, Jewell Elaine Roberts pf Baltimore, WV; brother, Robert Hoover Gragg of Canton, OH; 27 grandchildren; Several great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for IvaLee Oakes will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ, Newland, with Bro. Dave Atkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.

The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Thomas Ollis Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Mayland Foundation PO Box 547, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

James “Jay” Luttrell, D. March 6, 2012

James “Jay” Edward Luttrell, 71, ofGrape St., Linville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

A native ofWataugaCounty, he was born March 5, 1941 a son of the Maude Hollars Luttrell of Boone and the late Charles Ray Luttrell. He was a retired contractor who enjoyed fishing,traveling west, and spending time with his beloved family. Jay was a fun-loving friend to everyone! He will be fondly remembered as a masterful story teller and with a loving, compassionate spirit.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ina Horowitz.

In addition to his mother, he leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Donna Cooke Luttrell of the home; children, Laura and husband Mike Palmer of Boone, Jeff Luttrell of Foscoe, Mark and wife Kassie Luttrell of Foscoe; grandsons, Troy, Damien, Tyler, and Jason; sisters, Judy Church of Newton, Ann Allen of Newton, Rebecca Luttrell of Boone, Jane and husband Don Poole of Wake Forest; brothers, Rick and wife Terri Luttrell of Newland and Kirk Luttrell of Deming, NM.

They will gather with friends on Saturday, March 10 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the residence in Linville to celebrate and share Jay’s life.
