Dorothy “Dot” Hartley Townsend, D. Sept. 3, 2013.

Dorothy Hartley Townsend ,86, of Ruffin St, Linville, NC passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 in the Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital , Linville, North Carolina following an extended illness.

She was born in Linville, NC. on August 25, 1927, a daughter of the late Jeff Hartley Sr.and Elzora Underwood Hartley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Townsend. 

Funeral services for Dorothy “Dot” Townsend will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Revs. Roland Mullinix and Ted Henry officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour Thursday evening. 

Family, friends, and pallbearers will gather on Friday morning at 10:15 am at the funeral home to go in procession to the Tanglewood Cemetery for interment.

Howard I. Winslow, age 83, of Newland passed away on August 31, 2013 at his residence. 

A native of Wellington, Kansas, he was born March 21, 1930 a son of the late Jacob Hugh and Zelma L.Williams Winslow. 

He attended the University of Kansas and retired as a Real Estate Broker. Mr. Winslow had served on the Newland Town Council and was a member and Elder of the Heaton Christian Church. 

Howard honorably served his country as Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lynn Winslow. 

Howard has left to cherish his memory his: wife of 64 years, Patricia Ann Ward Winslow of the home; children, Nikki L. Boone of Belmont, NC, Kevin D. Winslow of Newland; sister, Velta Glenn of Caldwell, KS; grandchildren, Lanae E. Peterson of Bessemer City, NC, Natalie G. Boone of Charlotte, NC, Kayla J. Winslow of Newland, Lenzi J. Winslow of Newland; great grandchild, Landon C. Peterson of Bessemer City, NC. 

Services for Howard Winslow will be held on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Patterson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Betty Fabben.

Peggy Coscia, Aug. 27, 2013.

Peggy Coscia, age 77, of Beech Mountain passed away on August 27, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center. 

She was born January 25, 1936 in Pittsburg, PA. 

Peggy was a member of St. Bernadettes Catholic Church and enjoyed knitting, reading, eating at all of the local eateries, shopping the local retailers and attending the various festivities and activities in the area. 

The unofficial Mayor of Beech Mountain, she was very active with the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce and was awarded the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year for 2008-2009. 

Along with her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her: son, D.J. Trachtenberg and granddaughter, Sarah Trachtenberg. 

Peggy has left to cherish her memory her: son, Michael Trachtenburg of Weston, FL.; daughter, Cobi Moon and spouse Joe Lazcano of Miami, FL.; daughter-in-law, Betsy Tractenberg of Newland; grandchildren, Josh Trachtenberg, Danny Moon, Jake Trachtenberg, Bobby Moon, Cory Anna Trachtenberg, Chistina Villar and husband Alex, Daniel Lazcano; great granddaughter, Alessa Villar. 

The family of Peggy Coscia will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Evelyn Lee Benfield Phillips, age 67, of Coxes Creek, NC entered her heavenly home Thursday August 29, 2013.. 

A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Hoke and Lockie Benfield. 

Lee was a CNA for years. Lee enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her family. 

She attended Coxes Creek Freewill Baptist Church. 

Lee has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Donna Washburn and husband Roger (her favorite son-in-law); 3 grandchildren, Derek Washburn and wife Kim, Dustin Washburn and Rachel Washburn; 2 great grandchildren, Clayton and Josten Washburn; brothers, Sonny Benfield and wife Lois of Minneapolis, Junior Benfield and wife Debbie of Crab Orchard; sisters, Alice Rhynes and husband Ken of Morganton, Naomia Woody Sparks of Roan Mountain, TN., Pauline Shell and husband Dean of Roan Mountain; Emma Trivett and husband Richard of Crossnore; Estella Burleson and husband Tommy of Newland, Ann Webb and husband Byron of Cranberry, Ellen Garland and husband Burl of Bakersville, NC; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. 

Funeral services for Evelyn Lee Benfield Phillips will be conducted on Saturday, August 31st at 12:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Miller and Rev. James Beaver officiating. Interment will follow in the Big Meadows Cemetery . The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Blenda Lou Lovett, age 65, of Newland passed away on August 27, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center. 

A native of Avery County, she was born October 5, 1947 a daughter of the late Joseph and Virginia Holtsclaw Brown. 

Blenda retired from Baxter Healthcare and enjoyed gardening, painting, wreath making and being outside. 

She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. 

Loved by her family, Blenda has left to cherish her memory her: children; Donna Chapman and husband Stewart of Newland, Sherry Puett and husband Mike of Jonas Ridge, Lora Jones and husband David of Elizabethton, Dennis Lovett, Jr. and wife Annette of Jonas Ridge and her missing daughter of 13 years Julie Ann Lovett McMahon whose last known location was Mountain City, TN; sisters, Mabel Clark and husband Oscar of Jonas Ridge, Helen Brown of Elk Park, Brenda Jane Banner and husband Allen of Newland, Barbara Wilson of Spruce Pine, Lana Kay Buchanan and husband Tim of Minneapolis; brothers, Junior Brown and wife Macie, Bobby Joe Brown, Mike Brown and wife Janice all of Elk Park; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Blenda Lou Lovett will be conducted on Thursday, August 29th at 7:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Mr. Ryan Shirck officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the Brockwell Cemetery for graveside services at 11:00 a.m.

Dwayne Poteat, age 45, of Elk Park passed away on August 26, 2013 at his residence. 

He was born in Mitchell County on August 23, 1968 a son of Christine King Pitman of Spruce Pine and the late Edgar Milton Poteat. 

Dewayne was a country boy at heart and enjoyed fishing and coon hunting. 

Along with his mother, Dewayne has left to cherish his memory his: children, Ashley Nicole Grindstaff of Bakersville, Brittany McIntosh and husband Nick of Elk Park, Hunter Ross Poteat of Elk Park, Jayden Leigh Poteat of Elk Park; sisters, Lana Houston of Spruce Pine, Debbie Garland of Burnsville; grandchildren, Bryson and Brady Grindstaff; very special friends, Tanya Turbyfill Poteat, Donald Roderick, Roger and Jane Turbyfill; his little buddy, William Roderick; niece and nephew, Sissy and Jeremiah. 

Funeral services for Dwayne Poteat will be conducted on Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Donald Gragg officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Saturday, August 31st at 3:15 p.m. to go in procession to Winters Cemetery for graveside services at 4:00 p.m.
