Vernon E. Morris, D. Oct. 24, 2012

Vernon E. Morris, age 95, affectionately known as “Vern”, “Pap”, “Pop” and “Wildman”, of Linville passed away on October 24, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Vernon was born September 2, 1917 in Somserset, PA the son of the late Cornie and Rosie Rock Morris.

He was a member of Linville Evangelical Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, telling stories, going to and volunteering at the Avery County Senior Center.

Along with his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his: wife Pauline Morris; sons, Gary Wayne Morris and Kevin Allen Morris; daughter, Kay Morris.

Vernon has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Dena Morris of Newland; grandson, Tracy Morris and wife Lindsay of Newland, Micah Rankhorn and wife Arrington of Sugar Mtn. NC, Chris Rankhorn and wife Heidi of Roan Mtn., TN; great grandchildren, Jada Coffey, Dylan Rankhorn, Haley Rankhorn, Jonathan Rankhorn, Trevor Rankhorn.

There will be a service celebrating Vern on Saturday, November 3rd from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the residence of his daughter Dena at 160 Watauga St. Newland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Avery County Senior Center at PO Box 447 Newland, NC 28657.

Dale Rupard, D. Oct. 17, 2012
Dale Rupard, age 66, of Heaton passed away on October 17, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 23, 1945 in Watauga County, a son of the late Carl and Louise Shook Rupard.

Dale was a member of the Linville Evangelical Methodist Church and enjoyed antique cars and fishing.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by: his sisters, Ernestine Rupard and Claudine Trivette.

A loving daddy, pawpaw and husband who loved and cared about his family, Dale has left to cherish his memory: his wife, Della Rupard; children, Penny and John Hicks, Tammy and William Costner, Kenny and Lori Hicks, Eric and Laura Hicks; grandchildren, Codie, Kayla and husband Mark, Jessie and husband Chad, Josh and wife lacey, Thomas, Victor; 3 great grandchildren; siblings, Norma Jean Phillips, Dayton Rupard and wife Judy, JoAnn Sanders, Larry Rupard and wife Gail, Shelby Mitchell; a host of nieces and nephews; special friend, Audrey Rominger.

Funeral services for Dale Rupard will be conducted on Friday, October 19th 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Harper officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Saturday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the Cannon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Tony Townsend, Tony Trivette, Howard Townsend, Barnette Harmon, Greeley Sturgill, Shane Caudill; honorary pallbearers will be: Burle Townsend, Ken Goins.

Gary Ralph Sells, 56, of Linville passed away on Wednesday October 17, 2012.
Ralph was born on September 25, 1956 in Livingston, TN to the late Robert and Maple Daniels Sells.

A lifelong resident of Avery County, Ralph worked in the local construction field after owning Sells Tree Service for many years.
He was an avid outdoorsman who thoroughly enjoyed camping, fishing and hiking.
He always took the most joy in spending quality time with his many friends and family.

Left to cherish his memory are: his three children, Greg Sells and wife Natasha, Kyle Sells and Nicole Page and husband John; six grandchildren, Sydney, Taylor, JJ, Tyler, Christopher and Jada; two sisters, Cathy Benfield and Pamela Sells, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 4:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Harper officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Lora Ruth Cantrell, D. Oct. 16, 2012
On Tuesday Oct 16, 2012 Lora Ruth Ledford Cantrell, 69, of 195 Jaynes Rd. went home to be with the Lord.

A native of Avery County she was the daughter of the late Harlan and Mary Ledford of Newland. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Mary Lorene, who died at birth and her older sister, Arlean Eller.
Lora loved to cook, sew, embroider, crochet, make jewelry and had found a new love for flower arranging at Brenda Kay’s.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her husband Jack Cantrell of 47 years, her two sons Tim Cantrell and Fiancée Pam Jennings of Elk Park, and Shane Cantrell and wife Danielle of Minneapolis. Her two daughters Jacki Singleton and husband Tim of Pyatte and Lorie Harmon and husband Rex of Minneapolis. Lora had 8 Grandchildren, Skylar Tipton, Riley Jennings, Amber Singleton, Dalton, Lukas and Olivia Harmon and Brandon and Mattie Cantrell. Surviving sister, Emma Benfield of North Cove.

Funeral services for Lora will be held at 7pm Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Haley and Rev Joshua Calvert officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be in the Ledford Family Cemetery Goose Hollow Road, Montezuma.
