Vivian Johnson Stamey, D. Nov. 28, 2012

Vivian Johnson Stamey, age 83, of Newland passed away on November 28, 2012 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 1, 1929 a daughter of the late Ettle and Rose Biggs Johnson.

She was a member of the Avery Revival Center where she was a great help and helped to build the church. She was kind to everyone and was a part of the Friday Lunch Bunch of the Avery County Senior Center.

Along with her parents, Vivian was preceded in death by her: husband, Paul Stamey; sisters, Lucille Oakes, Edith Smith, Anna Lee Dean. Florence Vance; brothers, Albert Johnson, Jim Johnson, Jack Taylor; son-in-law, Tony Holden.

Vivian has left to cherish her memory her: son, Benny L. Johnson and wife Sherry of Hampton, TN; daughters, Rosetta Russell and husband Steve of Greenville, TN, Sherri Holden of Roan Mountain; sister, Toots Hall of Newland; brother, Joe Johnson of Newland; sisters-in-law, Nell Aldridge of Crossnore, Bonnie Johnson of Newland; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grand children; 1 great-great grandchild.

Funeral services for Vivian Johnson Stamey will be conducted on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Buzz Beers and Rev. Benny Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Saturday, December 1st at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the Johnson Cemetery for graveside services. Pallbearers will be: Benjamin Johnson, Mark Burleson, Joey Burleson, Patterson Cox, Rhett Scott, Vincent Shook, Matthew Shook and Darius Shook.

Kasey Randall James Hicks, infant son of Amber Evans of Newland and Bret Hicks of Roan Mountain, passed away on November 26, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Along with his parents, he is survived by: his maternal grandparents, Terry Evans of Marion, and Connie McKinney of Newland; paternal grandparents, Katie Sluder and husband Harold of Roan Mtn., Scott Hicks and wife Tammy also of Roan Mtn.; great grandparents, Sterlin and Peggy Perkins of Roan Mtn., John and Pat Glenn of Marion, Dorothy McKinney of Newland; great-great grandmother, Louise Cordell of Roan Mtn.; aunts and uncles, Angie Waycaster of Spruce Pine, Cindy and Steve Ward of Bakersville, Cory Hicks of Roan Mtn., Nick Oxendine also of Roan Mtn.; several great aunts and cousins.

Funeral services for Kasey Randall James will be conducted on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow in the Perkins Cemetery in Roan Mountain. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Eldon Boner, D. Nov. 24, 2012
Eldon Wellington Boner, age 88, of Spartanburg passed away on November 24, 2012 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

He was born October 4, 1924 a son of the late Wellington and Florence Mounts Boner.

Eldon was an Industrial Engineer for Cooper Industries. He was an excellent furniture maker and enjoyed square dancing and was an avid fly fisherman.

Along with his parents, Eldon was preceded in death by his: wife of 58 years, Maryruth Weinrich Boner; son, Paul Weinrich Boner; brother, Lowell Boner.

A very kind, caring and conscientious man; Eldon has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Anna Baker and husband Brian of Sarasota, FL.; brothers, Ronald Lee Boner and wife Eileen of Uniontown, OH, Allen Boner and wife Barbara of Fredrick, OH; nephew, Gordon Lesley Boner and wife Dottie of Hartville, OH; niece, Debra Payne and husband Tom of Fort Mill, SC; cousin, Jennie Mae Marquesen and husband Gary of Lancaster, OH; close friends, Judith Ann Allen and husband Barney of Moore, SC, Sabrina Spry and husband Jim of Inman, SC; companion, Joan Ross-McGuire.

Funeral services for Eldon Wellington Boner will be conducted on Wednesday, November 28th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services. Graveside services will be on Friday, November 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the Friends Quaker Cemetery in Ohio.

Shirley Ollis Estep , age 63, of Lenoir passed away on November 22, 2012 at her residence.

A native of Avery County, she was born December 7, 1948 a daughter of the late Howard George and Sylvia Naomi Jones Ollis.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, gardening, making crafts and working puzzles.

Along with her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her: husband, Thomas Dewey Estep; brother, Howard “Junior” Ollis; sister, Betty Carver.

A beloved sister, mother and grandmother who enjoyed being with her family, Shirley has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Kimberly Estep of Lenoir; sister, Tina Ferguson of Newland; brother, Jack Ollis and wife Sherry of Newland; grandchildren, Christopher Estep of Lenoir, Katie Carty of Granite Falls; great granddaughter, Natalie Estep.

Funeral services for Shirley Ollis Estep will be conducted on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel. Interment will follow in the Slippery Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Thelma Forbes Hampton, D. Nov. 20, 2012
Thelma Forbes Hampton, age 102, of Linville passed away on November 20, 2012 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, TN.

She was born November 12, 1910 a daughter of the late John Wesley and Rosa Burleson Forbes.

She was a member of the Linville Evangelical Methodist Church. Thelma had worked for many years as the Hostess for Esseola Lodge and enjoyed cooking, canning, and being with her family.

Along with her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her: husband, Francis Marion Hampton; brothers, Murphy Forbes, Cody Forbes, Carson Forbes, John W. Forbes, Jr.; sisters, Agnes Henley, Myrtle Greene, Elsie Harmon, Edna Forbes, Margaret Shell, and Josephine Turlington.

Thelma has left to cherish her memory a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Thelma Hampton will be held on Friday, November 23, at 2:00 pm in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Harper and rev. John McCoury officiating. Interment will follow in the Tanglewood cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.
