Ruth Smith Aldridge, age 94, of Newland passed away on May 13, 2014 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 24, 1920 the daughter of the late Minnie Garland Smith.

She was a member of Pineola Baptist Church and was retired from Garrett/Sloop Care after 27 years where she was a cook.

Ruth enjoyed gardening and flowers, but her greatest joy was her four boys.

Along with her mother, Ruth was preceded in death by her: husband, Carl Aldridge; son, Tom Aldridge; grandson, Michael Aldridge, Jr.

Ruth has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Mike Aldridge and wife Martha of Newland, Garry Aldridge and wife Alicia of Boone, NC., Dennis Aldridge of Newland; daughter-in-law, Doris Aldridge of Pyatte; granddaughters, Alesia Calloway and husband Steve of Pyatte, Angela Berry and husband Tim of Pineola, Christina Aldridge of Nashville, TN.; grandsons, Doyle Hutcheson and wife Pam of Cumberland City, TN., Devon Aldridge and wife Andrea of Kings Mountain, NC., Darin Aldridge and wife Brooke of Cherryville, NC.; great grandchildren, Amber King and husband Cody, Ryan, Christopher, Aaron, Abby; great-great granddaughter, Bristel; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ruth Smith Aldridge will be conducted on Friday, May 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Pineola Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Aldridge officiating. Interment will follow in the Pineola Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 15th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Pineola Baptist Church.

Jennie Clark Vance, D. May 11, 2014

Jennie Clark Vance, age 86, of Newland passed away on May 11, 2014 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 29, 1928 a daughter of the late Bud and Nettie JaneVance Clark.

She was a member of Crossnore Baptist Church and was very active in the Republican Party.

Jennie enjoyed playing the guitar, sharing her love for the Lord, yodeling and performing music with her husband Jim all over the United States. They performed in front of Congress, President Gerald Ford and on the USO Tour in Vietnam in 1969.

Along with her parents, Jennie was preceded in death by her: husband, Jim Vance; son, Todd Vance.

She loved her family and friends and adored her grandchildren.

Jennie has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Dianne Vance of Crossnore; son, Bucky Vance of Crossnore; brothers, A.C. Clark and Ed Clark both of Crossnore; granddaughters, Nichole Hively of TX, Stella Vance of Crossnore, Mercedez Rose of Marion, Courtney Burgin of TN, Dakota Vance of Crossnore; great grandchildren, Trevor Vance, Sophie Hively, Lillie Hively, Cooper Rose.

Funeral services for Jennie Clark Vance will be conducted on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 8:00 pm at the Crossnore Baptist Church with Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour at the church. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the Crossnore Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 14 at 9:15 a.m. to go in procession to the White Pine Cemetery for Interment services.

Rev. Charles Lanier, D. May 7, 2014

Lanier

Rev. Charles Lanier, age 86, of Newland passed away on May 7, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Johnston County, NC., he was born June 15, 1927 a son of the late Rev.George Peterson and Maybelle Ada Turner Lanier.

As an ordained minister he pastored churches throughout North and South Carolina. He also served in the North Carolina school system as a teacher and acting principal for over ten years.

In 1982 he began his service as Director of Missions for the Avery Baptist Association, retiring in 1992. He has been a member of the Lions Club, North Carolina Educational Association, the American Red Cross and he was a Mason.

He enjoyed reading, classic cars, fishing and traveling.

Charles has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Delores Lanier of the home; children, Janice Carswell and husband Donald of Morganton, Chuck Lanier and wife Teresa of Huntersville, Gwendolyn Stowers and husband Steve of Concord, Angela Turner and husband Tim of Hickory; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Rev. Charles Lanier will be conducted on Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 a.m. in the McDowell Memorial Park in Marion, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at PO Box 1889 Wake Forest, NC 27588 or to the Mountain States Hospice, Medtech Pkwy, Johnson City, TN
