“Mother” worked from the time she was old enough to hold a hoe until she was up into her 80’s. As a teenager in the depression, she worked for the Henley Inn in Linville. At age 33 she became a widow. This left her with the responsibility of feeding 5 children, tending to a farm and being a cook at Beech Mountain Elementary. She worked at Beech Mountain Elementary School for 10 years and fed over 100 children. After she finished her duties at the elementary school, she would walk home where she had to tend a garden, can food, milk the cow and whatever else it took to maintain a farm. Mother also found the time to make beautiful things. She quilted, hooked rugs and made “Cinderella Dolls”, “Dorothy Dolls” and “Witch Dolls”. Her dolls were sold at the Appalachian Crafts Center in Cove Creek. Mother worked hard. Through all the hard times she still sang hymns, recited the Scriptures, smiled and laughted. She was fearless and fierce when wronged, but never vengeful. Mother was always generous to her neighbors. She would give them potatoes or canned goods whenever they were needed. She often welcomed members of the community that weren’t always welcome anywhere else into her living room and kitchen. Mother was truly a blessing to everyone she came to know and will be missed dearly.
