Mary “Poozie” Strickland, D. Dec. 31, 2012
Mary “Poozie” Strickland, age 76, of Elk Park passed away on December 31, 2012 at her residence.

A native of Avery County, she was born October 26, 1936 a daughter of the late Robert Nage and Lucille Tatum Winters.

She was of the Baptist Faith and worked as a Respiratory Therapist.

Poozie enjoyed needle point, crafts, piano and music.

Along with her parents, Poozie was preceded in death by her: husband, John F. Strickland; sisters, Lilliam Tibedeaux, Ruby MacFee, Patricia Williams, Lucy Stewart, Ann Winters; cousin, Gordon Winters.

Poozie has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Sam Heaton and wife Sharon of Roan Mountain, Steve Heaton of Roan Mountain, Andrew Strickland and wife Amanda of Elk Park; granddaughter, Emily Heaton; grandson, Evan Heaton.

Funeral services for Mary “Poozie” Strickland will be conducted at a later date.

David Jonathon Trachtenberg, age 52, of Newland passed away on December 28, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born October 28, 1960 in Miami Beach, FL. a son of the late Howard Trachtenberg and Margaret Coscia Trachtenberg of Beech Mountain.

Along with his mother, David has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Betsy Trachtenberg of the home; daughter, Cory Anna Trachtenberg of Newland; son, Jake Trachtenberg of Newland; sister, Cobi Moon of Miami, FL.; brother, Michael Trachtenberg of Miami, FL.

No services are planned at this time for Mr. Trachtenberg.

Ralph Lynn Puckett, age 55, of passed away on December 26, 2012 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born January 17, 1957.

He was a landscaper and enjoyed fishing, his dogs, gardening and spending time with his friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his: mother, Geneva Shell; step-father, Homer P. Shell, Sr. and multiple aunts and uncles.

He has left to cherish his memory his: sisters, Connie Holiman and husband Mike of Johnson City, TN, Sheri Cornett and husband Larry of Crossnore, Missy Baird and husband Randy of Heaton; brother, Homer “Jamie” Shell of Newland; step-brothers, Ed Shell and wife Cathy of Heaton, Homer Shell, Jr. and wife Lillian of Las Vegas, Nevada; special friend, Barbara Ann Seatz of Newland; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ralph Lynn Puckett will be conducted on Saturday, December 29th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Niddifer officiating. Interment will follow in the Heaton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Juanita Johnson Hodges, D. Dec. 24, 2012
Juanita Johnson Hodges of Hendersonville NC, Newland NC, and Canton OH, passed away at 11:00 pm Monday, December 24, 2012 at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville.

She worked as a Real Estate Broker in Canton Ohio from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, raised a family, and then retired to North Carolina with her husband Frank. Juanita, born February 12, 1929, was the tenth of twelve children born to William A. Johnson and Auby Cornett Johnson of Newland, NC. Juanita was preceded in death by her son Daryl, her husband of 61 years Frank William Hodges, originally of Boone, NC, and nine of her brothers and sisters. Her surviving sisters are Willa Mae Sluder and Margaret Ledford of Newland.

Juanita is also survived by her children; Marlene and her husband David Kirk and their son D.J. of St. Louis, Marlene’s son Daniel Cusma of Houston and his wife Elizabeth, Lawrence and his wife Sherry of Hendersonville and their son Jason and daughter Beth Owenby and Beth’s husband Mark of Asheville, NC; Daryl’s daughters Reina Perkins and husband Robert and Kelly Williams of Houston; and Jeffrey and his wife Cecelia of Houston. Survivors also include four great grandchildren.

Friends will be received before the service from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Newland, NC on Sunday, December 30th. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at the Fork Mountain Cemetery. 828-733-2121
