She was born on Aug. 11, 1925 in Compton, Ark., to the late John “Wade” Sims and the late Roxie Allred Sims, who was one-quarter American Indian.

There would be ten children in the family. Her father served his country during World War 1. In order for Lila to finish high school, she, like many of her siblings, had to leave home and go to Missouri, near Branson, to a school called “The School of the Ozarks,” which was founded by the man who also started the JCPenney department store.

The students were required to work at the school to pay for their tuition. They did jobs like, cooking and waiting tables in the cafeteria. They made clothes and things on a spinning wheel. They could not afford to go home during the school year. Lila graduated in 1946 and soon after she found a job in Banner Elk at the Children’s Home and became a houseparent for a group of young girls.

Ms. Ann ran the home then. While there she met Ken Ollis who came to the home with a friend. This was a “double date” night, and the boys and girls had never met before. This date led to Lila and Ken getting married on April 15, 1948 in Harrison, Ark. After the wedding, they bought a new car and drove home to Cranberry. Soon after G.P. Taylor finally agreed to sell them the home, they would live in Cranberry. To buy it, they had to sell their new car.

On Dec. 27, 1951 Rickey was born and on Aug. 2, 1956 Tim was born. Ken went to be with the Lord on July 15, 1997.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sons, Rickey Ollis, and his wife, Kathryn, of Hendersonville, Tenn., Tim Ollis of the home; grandchildren, Hannah Garrett, and her husband Scott, of Old Hickory, Tenn., Johnny Ollis of Elk Park, Jennifer Ollis of Winston-Salem, Jessica Ollis, and her husband, Cory, of Elk Park, Jacob Ollis of Raleigh; sisters, Laverne Truesdale of Harrison, Ark., Junie Cantrell of Missouri, Viva Jacobs of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Lenis Sims of Compton, Ark., Ulsys Sims of Oregon; ten great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
