Harry Horney, age 63, of Maiden passed away on December 12, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 9, 1949 the son of H.M. “Junior” and Ellen Dora Ware Horney of Newland.

He attended the Conerstone Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed watching NASCAR and playing golf.

Harry was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Ansley Claire Horney and Claire Elizabeth Horney.

Along with his parents,H.M. Jr and Ellen Dora Horney, Harry, a very loving husband and family man, has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Adesi Horney of the home; sons and daughters-in-law; Martin and Leslie Horney of Newland, Matthew and Amy Horney of Cranberry, Mitchell and Becca Horney of Newland; step sons, Donnie Gilbert of Maiden, Tyler Gilbert of Maiden, Zack Gilbert of Maiden; grandchildren: Harrison, Ethan, Maddie, Ayla, Chandler, and Elli.

Funeral services for Harry Horney will be conducted on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Foster and Rev. Tony Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. to go in precession to the John Johnson Cemetery for graveside services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society at 4-A Oak Branch Dr. Greensboro, North Carolina 27407 or the Avery Cancer Resource Center.

Mae Hopson, age 76, of Newland passed away on December 9, 2012 at her residence.

A native of Avery County, she was born June 5, 1936 a daughter of the late Romulus and Hettie Greene Hughes.

Along with her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her: husband, Tom Hopson; infant son, R.L. Hopson; sisters, Goldie Hicks, Naomia Jones.

Mae has left to cherish her memory her: children; Libra Hughes and the late Johnny Hughes of Roaring Creek, T.W. “Tom” Hopson and wife Angie of Pigeon Roost, Jenny Hughes and husband Jerry of Roaring Creek, Shanda Jones and husband Jerry Dale of Lick Log; brothers, Eldridge Hughes of Lexington, James Hughes and wife Opal of Lexington; sisters, Josephine Hopson and husband Ham of Roaring Creek, Helen Hughes of Lexington, Hazel Hargrave of Lexington, Florence Morrison of Lexington; grandchildren, Johnny Brown of Roaring Creek, Anna Henderson and husband Shane of Roaring Creek, Monica Calloway and husband Carl of Boone, Matthew Hopson of Spruce Pine, Jeremy Hopson of Beech Mountain, Stacy Hopson of Pigeon Roost, Derick Hughes and wife Hannah of Stony Creek, TN, Jerina Moore and husband Robby of Marshall, NC, Jericha Jones of Lick Log, Jesse Jones of Lick Log; 10 great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Mae Hopson will be conducted on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the Tom Hopson Memorial Gardens with Rev. Jody Almond officiating.
