Josephine Johnson, D. Oct. 24, 2012
Mrs. Josephine Johnson age 90, of West Jefferson, died on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Johnson was born on September 16, 1922 in Lilly, FL to Charles and Donnie Albrittan Newberry. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by parents, husband, Lester Edward Johnson, grandson, Neal Taylor and two sisters. Mrs. Johnson attended the Ashe County Worship Center and she always had a green thumb when it came to gardening. She currently was working as a senior companion though the Appalachian Senior Program.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens by Pastor Chuck Call.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by: Son, Gene Taylor and wife Jane of Charlotte, two grandchildren, Mark Taylor and Leigh Taylor Manns, also surviving are 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Doris Miller Lambert

Doris Miller Lambert, D. Oct. 23, 2012
Mrs. Doris Miller Lambert, age 82, of West Jefferson passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 23, 2012 at Carolina Medical Center Northeast in Concord.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Casey, Rev. David Lyalls and Speaker Justin McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00pm on Friday, October 26, 2012 at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lambert was born in Ashe County on February 9, 1930 to the late Minter Memphis Miller and Dillie C. Roop. She was known for her good cooking and famous gravy and biscuit. She loved being outside working in flowers and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She was a member of Mt. Jefferson Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Bobby Farmer and wife Rita of Warrensville; three daughters; Linda Sexton and husband Ed of Jefferson, Kathy Deal and companion Steve Freeze of Kannapolis, and Carol McNeill and husband Billy of West Jefferson; one brother; Earnest Miller of Lansing; two sisters; Ola Vaughan of Eastland, Michigan, and Stella Bennett of Lima Ohio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Stella Ruth Huff Baker, D. Oct. 23, 2012
Stella Ruth Huff Baker, age 79, of Fleetwood, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the Hill View Family Care Home in Todd, NC. Ms. Baker was born on May 24, 1933 to the late Dewey and Fannie Greer Huff.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob Huff, Burl Huff, Claude Huff, and Jack Huff and a sister, Lillian Huff. She was born in Ashe County and reared during the Great Depression, where she came to appreciate the simple things in life.

For many years she provided child care services from her home for many families in the area who remembered her for her calm and caring nature with their children. She also had a love of gardening and was known for sharing the bounty of vegetables with others in the community. Those fortunate enough to have tasted her fabulous chow-chow or homemade fudge were instantly hooked. Ruth loved the outdoors, walking and hiking, sunshine and mountain air. And if bluegrass music was playing, it couldn’t get any better than that.

In her later years, the weekly visitation she received at Hill View Family Care Home by Glen Baker was invaluable. All the caring providers at Hill View were a godsend to the family when Ruth required care outside the home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Jack Miller. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service at Ashelawn.

Ms. Baker is survived by: Daughter, Linda Taylor and husband Kyle of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Son, Wayne Baker and wife Myra of Charlotte, NC; Four brothers, Jimmy Huff of North Wilkesboro, George Huff of Morganton, Earl Huff of Oklahoma City, OK, and Kyle Huff of Sparta; Grandson, David Baker; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Geneva Davis Absher, Oct. 23, 2012
Mrs. Geneva Davis Absher, age 88, of West Jefferson, NC died on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Absher was born on February 22, 1924 in Ashe County, NC to the late Calvin Newton Davis and Laura Cox Davis. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Absher was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. Absher, her grandson, Joseph Matthew Barry, and nine brothers and sisters.. Mrs. Absher worked as a machine operator at Leviton Manufacturing.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday, October 26, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Absher is survived by: Daughter, Donna Lynn Garris of Darlington, SC; Grandson, Anthony Ray Barry; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Thelma Lee Roten, D. Oct. 22, 2012
Mrs. Thelma Lee Roten age 78, of Creston, NC died on Monday, October 22, 2012 at the Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Roten was born on November 17, 1933 in Ashe County, NC to Bruce and Alice Osborne Woods. Mrs. Roten was a faithful member of the Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union by Rev. Darrell Graybeal. Burial will follow in Roten Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Mr. Justin Todd Canter, better known as “Buster, age 20, of Creston, passed away Monday morning, October 22, 2012 at North Carolina Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11am at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. David Lyalls, Rev. Frankie Rash, and Rev. Lonnie Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Rash Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-9pm at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mr. Canter was born in Ashe County on July 14, 1992 to the late Joseph “Joey” Todd Canter, Jr. and Regina Gail Roten Taylor. He had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. He also enjoyed riding dirt bikes.

He is preceded in death by his father; Joseph Todd Canter, Jr.; great-grandparents; Lawson and Ruth Greer, Odell and Stella Canter, Lonnie and Inez Wyatt, and Odell Roten; one uncle Allen Roten.

He is survived by his mother; Regina Gail Roten of Crumpler; Grandparents; J.T. and Barbara Canter of Creston, and Jerry and Kay Roten of Crumpler; one great-grandmother; Zena Roten of Laurel Springs; three sisters; Samantha Dawn Canter of Crumpler, Savannah Taylor of Crumpler, and Harley Taylor of Crumpler; one aunt; Hope Guy and husband Michael of Crumpler; one uncle Denise and wife Cynthia of Crumpler; girlfriend; Kim Carpenter; special nephew; Levi Canter; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Laura Virginia Coldiron

Laura Virginia Coldiron, D. Oct. 21, 2012
Mrs. Laura Virginia Coldiron, age 79, of Butler, Tennessee, died Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 11:00am at Sugar Tree Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Greer officiating. Burial will follow in the Lewis Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Sugar Tree Baptist Church.

Mrs. Coldiron was born in Ashe County November 18, 1932 to the late Harrison Phillips and Claude Farmer Phillips. When living in Ashe County she attended Sugar Tree Baptist Church and attended Beach Mountain Baptist Church in Butler. She loved to crochet and also loved to garden.
She was also preceded in death by two husbands; Evert Lewis and Denver Coldiron; four brothers; Bud, Ted, Charlie, and Harold Phillips.

Mrs. Coldiron is survived by two sons; Jerry Lewis and wife Rita of Lansing, and Larry Lewis of Crumpler; two daughters; Linda Osborne and husband Robert of West Jefferson, and Nellie Storey and husband of Butler, TN; two brothers; Larry Phillips of Lansing, and Ellis Phillips of Maryland; four sisters; Maye Greer of Lansing, Ruby Ham of Lansing, Shirley Bauguess of Lansing, and Jane Farmer of Grassy Creek; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Jan ” J. J.” Caddell Jr., D. Oct. 21, 2012
Mr. Jan Raymond Caddell Jr. better known as “J J”, age 49, of Jefferson, NC died on Sunday, October 21, 2012. Mr. Caddell was born May 27, 1963 in Hartsville, SC to Jan Raymond Sr. and Lucy Tyner Caddell. J. J. worked for many years as program director at various state radio stations.

A private entombment service was held at West Jefferson United Methodist Church Columbarium with Rev. Peter Taylor officiating.

Mr. Caddell is survived by: his parents, Jan and Lucy Tyner Caddell of Jefferson, one brother, Graham Caddell and wife Carrie of Jefferson, one sister, Charlotte Thompson and husband Jimmy of West Jefferson, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Archie Lorane Shaw, D. Oct. 19, 2012
Mrs. Archie Lorane Haire Shaw age 85, of West Jefferson, NC died on Friday, October 19, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Shaw was born on March 1, 1927 in Ashe County to James and Bessie Hudler Haire. Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Mrs. Shaw loved the Lord and enjoyed going to church. She loved to draw and paint. She taught art in the school system for many years here in Ashe County.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Dean Shaw. Burial will follow in West Jefferson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by: her husband: Willard Shaw, one daughter: Pamela Devine of West Jefferson, one sister: Flossie LaRue and husband Charles of West Jefferson; two grandchildren: Carson Parsons and fiancée Patsy & Dama Roe and husband Rick; 2 great-grandchildren: Pamela Roe and Jamie Taylor; 1 great-great grandchild, Kaylyn Holman; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Verlis Helen Wyrick Trivette, age 77, of Jefferson, died on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Trivette was born on January 10, 1935 in Ashe County, NC to Benjamin and Annie Bare Wyrick. Mrs. Trivette was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Clarence, three sisters, Leona, Adrien and Dema.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 11:00 am at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Steve Goss. Entombment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Trivette is survived by: husband, Samuel “Sam” Trivette, two daughters, Rissie Salas of Jefferson, Bonita Thompson of Nashville, TN, two sisters, Bobbie Black and husband Robert, Willow Greay Dishman all of Jefferson, three grandchildren, Brad Cockerham, Dustin Massey and wife Jenny, Kenny Massey and wife Joy, two great-grandchildren, Rhylee Massey, Liam Massey; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Jones Nelson Testerman, D. Oct. 17, 2012
Mr. Jones N. Testerman age 81, of Grassy Creek, died on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Mr. Testerman was born on July 11, 1931 in Ashe County, NC to Avery and Minnie Jones Testerman. Mr. Testerman was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Carl Testerman, Gene Testerman, Gwyn Testerman, and Jack Testerman. Mr. Testerman was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. In his early career he worked for Holman-Moody, builders of NASCAR engines and more recent he would repair picture tubes for televisions. Jones enjoyed watching NASCAR races.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Charles McCoy and Rev. Russell Sheets. Burial will follow in Dixon – Testerman Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.
