Betty Darnell Severt

Betty Darnell Severt, D. Sept. 29, 2012
Mrs. Betty Darnell Severt age 90, of Jefferson, NC passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Margate Health & Rehab Center with her family by her side.

Betty was born on May 20, 1922 in Wilkes County, NC to Lundy and Alice Ayers Darnell. She was proud to call Ashe County her home for her entire life.

She loved being surrounded by family and friends, dancing and gardening. Mrs. Severt was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Johnny Bart Severt, several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tommy Dollar & Rev. Lonnie Pruitt. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 1, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Severt is survived by:

2 sons: Gordon Craven of MD & Rex Severt and wife Patty of West Jefferson

3 daughters: Rosa Lee Lyalls and husband Eddie & Peggy Foster all of West Jefferson & Donna Huntley and husband Greg of Morganton

8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire staff of Margate Health and Rehab for all the prayers, support, care and acts of kindness shown to them and their mother.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Kathleen Houck Gentry, D. Sept. 28, 2012
Mrs. Kathleen Sue Houck Gentry, age 86, of Todd died Friday, September 28, 2012 at Valley Healthcare Center.

Graveside services will be held Monday, October 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Bethany Cemetery with Rev. Owen Peeler officiating.

Mrs. Gentry was born in Ashe County on January 30, 1926 to the late Gurna and Flora Gentry Houck.

Mrs. Gentry is survived by one son; Allen Gentry and wife Becky of Abingdon, VA; one daughter; Kaye Green and husband Thomas of Wytheville, VA; two sisters; Mary Nell Marsh of Mooresville and Johnnie Webb of Ellerbe, NC; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Roger Sheets, D. Sept. 28, 2012
Roger Carl Sheets, age 88, of West Jefferson passed away Friday afternoon, September 28, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 4:00pm at Glendale Springs Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lloyd Day, Rev. Will Heyward and Rev. Jim Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in the George Miller Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00pm on Sunday, September 30, 2012 two hours prior to the funeral service in the church fellowship hall.

Mr. Sheets was born in Ashe County on Thursday, June 26, 1924 to the late Arthur and Austa Farrington Sheets. He was also a Baptist minister. Everyone who knew Roger knew he had a passion for music and shared with everyone.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie Miller Sheets on July 8, 2006; three sisters, Hallie Sheets, Zell Suite and Clara Bowlin; two brothers, Bain Sheets and Gwyn Sheets.

Mr. Sheets is survived by two daughters, Robin Sexton and husband, Greg, of West Jefferson and Melissa Barr and husband, Rusty, of West Jefferson; five grandchildren Andrew Sexton, Matthew Sexton, Thomas Sexton, Avery Barr and Olivia Barr; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will be meeting at the home of Rusty and Melissa Barr at 02 Church Avenue in West Jefferson.

Grace Sluder

Grace Sluder, D. Sept. 27, 2012
Mrs. Grace Ailene Phillips Sluder, age 92, of Todd, passed away Thursday morning, September 27, 2012 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2:00pm on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Williams and Rev. Lloyd Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Graham-Greer Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 12:30-2:00pm on Saturday, prior to the funeral service at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sluder was born in Mount Hope, West Virginia on Tuesday, June 29, 1920 to the late George Phillips and Rosie Phillips. She was a Homemaker and also loved cooking and always kept a clean house.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Astor Henry Sluder on July 10, 1999; three sons; Jessie Allen, Robert Johnson (RJ) Sluder, and Council Sluder; two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by three sons; Charles Allen and wife Iris of Morganton, Dewey Allen of California, and C.W. Sluder and wife Mary of Fleetwood; one daughter; Edith Allen Johnson of Morganton; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; twenty-three great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Vennie Perry

Vennie Owens Perry, D. Sept. 27, 2012
Mrs. Vennie Owens Perry, age 93, of Creston passed away Thursday morning, September 27, 2012 at Glenbridge Health and Rehab.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Shepherd and Rev. Evin Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery,

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Sunday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Perry was born in Ashe County on May 10, 1919 to the late Frelin and Ollie Pennington Owens. She worked as a packer at Kingsport Press for 29 years.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Perry.

Mrs. Perry is survived by a brother, James Owens and wife, Joann, of Creston; five sisters, Josie Odom and husband, Lonnie, of Kingsport TN, Mary Osborne and husband, Dale, of Creston, Ruth Osborne and husband, Earnest, of Creston, Louella Weaver and husband, Conley, of Mountain City TN and Ann Owens, of Mountain City TN; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Pearl Stanley Wood, D. Sept. 27, 2012
Mrs. Pearl Stanley Wood, age 83, of Creston, NC died on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Wood was born on February 28, 1929 in Ashe County, NC to the late Abraham Sanley and Bessie Alberta Neaves Stanley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son Tom Wood, four brothers, and one sister. Mrs. Wood was a member of Creston United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included reading, quilting, and cooking. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Rickey Mitchell and Rev. Denton Hart. Entombment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Wood is survived by: Husband – Robert Glenn Wood, Son – Jerry Wood and wife Betty of Creston, Daughter – Sherry Lambert and husband Jeff of Creston, Daughter-In-Law – Debbie Wood of Warrensville, Caregiver, Mary Treadway, five grandchildren, Rachel Clark and husband Tim, Ryan Wood and wife Jennifer, Justin Wood and wife Monica, Jessica Goodman and husband Billy, and Caroline Pearl Hamm, nine great grandchildren, Laney Clark, Will Clark, Mackenzie Wood, Gwyneth Wood, Caitlin Wood, Elizabeth Goodman, Kelsie Goodman, Adam Goodman, and Molly Goodman. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Joanne Taylor Johnson

Joanne Taylor Johnson, D. Sept. 25, 2012
Joanne Taylor Johnson, 75, of Guilford County, NC formerly of Ashe County, NC died Tuesday September 25th, 2012, at her home.

Joanne was born on March 13, 1937 in Ashe County, NC to the late Myrtle Jane Patrick Taylor and Eli Junior Taylor. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Joseph A. Johnson, Jr. and Brother Walter B. Taylor. Although she left Ashe County at age 11, she retained a deep love for it and the many relatives and friends she had there and in neighboring Johnson County, TN. Joanne was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are two sons- Joseph A. Johnson III and wife Annette, of Browns Summit, NC and Jason A. Johnson of Guilford County, NC; Brothers- Duane Taylor and wife Debra of Blacksburg, VA and Norman Taylor of Siler City, NC; Sister- Helen McNair and husband Larry of Roanoke, VA; Granddaughters- Meagan A. Johnson of Greensboro, NC, Whitney Johnson Levens of Lewisville, NC and Lauren Rigsbee and husband Joseph of Browns Summit, NC; Great Granddaughter- Ava Carol Levens of Lewisville, NC and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 29th, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson by Rev. Darrell Graybeal. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 1:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Saturday prior to the service.

Brayden Hawke Roten, age 2, of West Jefferson passed away Saturday Sept. 22, 2012 in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 12:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Church and Rev. Chuck Call officiating. Burial will follow in the Ebenezer cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10-12pm on Tuesday two hours prior to the funeral.

He is also preceded in death by two grandfathers; Thomas Myers and Howard Roten; and one great-grandmother; Opal Myers.

He is survived by his father; Michael Ray Roten; mother; Jessica Hope Myers; one brother; Michael Roten, Jr. of Boomer; two sisters; Zoey Roten of West Jefferson and Madison Roten of Boomer; two grandmothers; Evelyn Bell of Millers Creek and Patricia Myers of West Jefferson; two great-grandparents; Wanda Spears of West Jefferson and Charlie Clonch of Traphill; one great great-grandmother; Ester Pennington of West Jefferson; several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.
