Shirley Campbell Jordan, D. March 8, 2012

Mrs. Shirley Jean Campbell Jordan age 75, of Laurel Springs, NC died on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Concord, NC. Mrs.Jordanwas born on January 22, 1937 inAshe,NCto the late Charles and Ruth Duvall Campbell. In addition to her parents Mrs.Jordanwas preceded in death by a brother, William “Ralph” Campbell and her husband, Lloyd Thomas Jordan on January 22, 2012.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. John Duvall. Burial will follow inAshelawnMemorialGardens.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by: Son, Randy Jordan of Piney Creek, NC, two granddaughters, Kristy Jordan Cline and husband John of Concord, NC, Kelly Jordan of Blowing Rock, NC, great grandson, Caleb Cline of Concord, NC, one sister, Ina Anderson of Jefferson, NC also surviving are three nieces and nephews.

Grace Parsons Turner Calhoun, D. March 9, 2012

Grace passed away on Friday, March 9th 2012 at Margate Health andRehabCenterin Jefferson NorthCarolina. She was 92 years old.

She was born July 30th of 1919 inAsheCountyto John Alexander Parsons and Ellen Jones Parsons. She attendedRiverviewSchool. She managed the cafeteria atWarrensvilleElementary Schooluntil it closed in the mid 50’s. She subsequently worked in the Sprague Electric cafeteria until her retirement.

Grace is preceded in death by two husbands. Her first was Quincy Turner and her second husband was James Calhoun. She is survived by one sister, Edith Roten, ofJefferson,North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father and three brothers, Joe Parsons who died as an infant and Conley and Jones Parsons. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Virgie who died as an infant and Bernice Elliott and Hazel Stanley. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews. Grace will always be remembered for her exuberant personality. She never saw a stranger and she always improved your spirits no matter how low your morale. She loved children although she had none of her own. She was a second mother to all her nieces and nephews and many of the children in the neighborhood.

She was a homemaker and loved gardening, cooking and canning. She worked on the farm and helped with stacking hay working in the tobacco, caring for milk cattle and many other farm duties. She enjoyed teaching children how to milk cattle and do other farm chores. She was well known for her fried pies, pumpkin rolls and her sour dough bread. She was the family historian and knew more about the Parsons family than anyone else. She loved to work on quilts during the winter months and she left many fine examples of her work.

She was a life time member of theOakGroveBaptistChurchinWarrensville,North Carolina. She was a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years and she left a lasting impression on all her students. She is remembered fondly by generations for her personality and kindness. She always gave 100 percent and always managed to take her Sunday school class on one or more outings within the year. She was a devout Christian and visited other churches within and without the association. She loved to sing God’s praises and was a member of a trio and later a quartet that traveled from church to church to sing God’s praises.

Why should we cry for a soul set free. Let us celebrate that she is now in heaven where she will reap the reward for a lifetime of service here on earth.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 pm at theOakGroveBaptistChurchby Rev. Tommy Dollar, Rev. Rex Eldreth and Rev. George  Grubb. Burial will follow inAshelawnMemorialGardens.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.

Bina Baker Debord Orr, D. March 10, 2012

Bina, age 103 of Crumpler, NC, of the Chestnut Hill community, passed away at her home March 10th 2012.

She was born December 11th 1908 to Henry Clayborn and Mattie Tomlinson Baker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Conley DeBord, her second husband Rev. Finley Orr. Three sisters Clara Small, Winnie Wolff and Mary Sue Gamber, three brothers Joe Baker, Woodrow Baker and Lee Baker.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 2:00pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bobby Jones, Rev. Randal Greene and David VanHoy. Burial with follow inAshelawnMemorialGardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, March 12, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as her caregiver family Robert and Hilbish Jones.

Bina attended Appalachian State teachers college where she received her two year teaching degree in 1937, she then went back to Appalachian and received her Bachelor Science Degree in 1952. Upon graduation she began teaching in theAsheCountySchoolsystem and retired after 37 years of service. After retiring she became a member of the Retired School Personal. She was also a member of the Jefferson ECA club (homemakers), a former member of the Friends of the Library, a former member of Grassy Creek United Methodist Women’s club, a former member of Ashe County Woman’s club, and a former member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Chestnut Hill United Methodist, theGrassyCreekUnitedMethodistChurchesand last attended Chestnut Hill Baptist church. Along with being a member of all these organizations she still found time to be a volunteer atAsheMemorialHospitalas well as giving a helping hand to people in the community.

Mrs. Louise Irene Watson Church, age 86, ofFleetwood,NCdied on Monday, March 12, 2012 atWataugaMedicalCenterinBoone,NC. Mrs. Church was born on September 30, 1925 inAshe County,NCto the late Columbus and Bessie Phillips Watson. Mrs. Church was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Church, sister, Catherine Church, and brother, Howard Watson. Mrs. Church retired from TRW in Boone. She was a volunteer atAsheMemorialHospital.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 3:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Jack Miller. Burial will follow inAshelawnMemorialGardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm prior to the funeral service at Ashelawn.

Mrs. Church is survived by: two sons, Michael Church of Vilas, NC, and Stephen Church of Simpsonville, SC; six sisters, Arlee Brown of Maryland, Rita Yontz of Oregon, Violet Osborne of Maryland, Mary May of Lansing, NC, Evelyn Neaves of Whitsett, NC, and Ora Phillips of Deep Gap, NC. Also surviving are five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Melinda Church Fumich, age 49, of Calumet City, Illinois, died Monday, March 12, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. Fumich was born inElkton,Marylandon Sunday, September 23, 1962.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Fumich; one son, Michael Paul Fumich ofJoplin,Missouri; Parents, Sammy & Shirley Church of Jefferson; Two brothers, Blake Church and Neal Church of Fleetwood; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Shelba Jean Neaves Ballou, D. March 13, 2012

Mrs. Shelba Jean Neaves Ballou age 73, ofJefferson,NCpassed peacefully to her heavenly home Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Ballou was born December 21, 1938 in Fries, VA to the late Wiley Preston and Martha “Annie” Laurie Johnson Neaves. Mrs. Ballou retired from First Citizens Bank ofLansing.  She loved to cook and sew.  She loved her grandchildren very much.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 3:00 pm at theFletcherMemorialBaptistChurchby Rev. Steve Goss & Rev. Dan Little. Burial will follow inHealingSpringsBaptistChurchCemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm prior to the service.

Mrs. Ballou is survived by her husband of 53 years, Meredith Ballou; one daughter, Cathy Ballou of Winston-Salem, NC; one son, Rick Ballou and wife Amy of Jefferson, NC; one brother, Bill Neaves and wife Doris of Kernersville, NC; brother in law, Monte Ballou and wife Brenda of West Jefferson, NC; 5 grandchildren: Emily Ballou Anderson and husband Dustin, Ann Marie Ballou,  Haleigh Hogg, Brooke Hogg & Hunter Hogg all of Jefferson, NC; 1 great- grandchild: Troy Anderson of Jefferson; 1 niece, Donna Coltrell and husband John of Belews Creek, NC ; 2 nephews: Ken Neaves and wife Lisa of Greensboro, NC & Monte Ballou III of West Jefferson, NC.
