Joseph “Blaine” Miller, D. March 13, 2012

Mr. Joseph Blaine Miller better known as “Blaine”, age 67, of West Jefferson died Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2012 at his residence.

Memorial service will be held Friday March 16, 2012 at 2:00PM at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Osborne officiating.

Mr. Miller was born in Ashe County on Friday, July 21, 1944 to the late Ambrose Franklin Miller and Ola Greer. He was a truck driver for several trucking companies in Ashe County. His CB name was “Sign Post”.

He was also preceded in death by his father, Ambrose Miller, a sister, Noami Hartsog and a half-sister, Elsie Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Miller; One daughter, Shirlene Widner and husband Allen of West Jefferson; Mother, Ola Greer of West Jefferson; Five sisters, Lillian Miller of West Jefferson, Patsy Ashley and husband Quincy of North Wilkesboro, Sharon Trivett and husband Talmadge of West Jefferson, Mildred Sluder of Todd, and Joann Robinson and husband John of Crumpler; Two grandchildren, Allison Widner and Brandon Widner of West Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Charles Braithwaite, D. March 14, 2012

Mr. Charles Franklin Braithwaite III, age 90, of Jefferson died Wednesday March 14, 2012 at Segraves Nursing Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Braithwaite was born Friday, September 17, 1920 to the late Charles Franklin Braithwaite II and Alma Keil. Mr. Braithwaite served in the United States Air Force during World War II and Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1970.

He is survived by his two daughters; Janet Braithwaite of Mouth of Wilson, and Susan Forehand of Milliken, Colorado; and one grandson.

Howard Clifton Little, D. March 15, 2012

Mr. Howard Clifton Little, better known as Cliff, age 66, of Crumpler, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 2:00pm at Faith Fellowship Church with Speaker Dwight Kerr and Rev. Mike McCoy officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Saturday, one hour prior to the memorial service.

Mr. Little was born in Ashe Countyon Thursday, August 2, 1945 to the late Howard and Cloie Absher Little. He worked in maintenance for the Blue Ridge Parkway and he also had his own business “Spirits Vision Artistic Wood Work.” Cliff was a good God loving man. He had great knowledge of the Bible, you could always feel God’s spirit with him. In his spare time he enjoyed riding his motorcycle.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dallas Guthrie.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Williams Little; two sons, Michael Little and wife, Julie, of West Jefferson and Tony Little and fiancée Harley McNeil, of Crumpler; two daughters, Lisa Testerman and fiancée David Dowell, of Mouth of Wilson, VA and Tina Miller and husband, Tony, of Roanoke, VA; a brother, Odell Little, of Crumpler; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Effie Farmer Taylor, D. March 16, 2012

Mrs. Effie Farmer Taylor age 86, of Whitetop, VA died on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Frances Marion Manor in Marion, VA. Mrs. Taylor was born on April 5, 1925 in Ashe County, NC to the late Augustus Gray and Delsia Davis Farmer. Including her parents Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Woodrow Taylor, her siblings, Vernie Farmer, Ortha Stamper, Thomas Farmer, Loraine Surber and grandson, William Michael Stamper. Mrs. Taylor worked in the cafeteria at Mount Rogers School. She was a member of Farmers Memorial Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Dennis Eller, Rev. Rick Hurley and Rev. Roger Peak. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:00 am in Farmers Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by: four daughters, Virginia Kay Stamper and husband William F. of Whitetop, VA, Lois Jones and husband Scott of Troutdale, VA, Patsy Sage and husband Reese of Mouth Of Wilson, VA, Phyllis Stansberry and husband Elmer of Lansing, NC, three sons, Dennis Taylor and wife Vanessa, Denver Taylor and wife Glenda both of Whitetop, VA, Kenny Taylor and Fiancé Susan Anderson of Yadkinville, NC, two brothers, Bill Farmer of Lansing, NC, Wilton Farmer of Whitetop, VA, one sister, Kathleen Hensley of Whitetop, VA, Special Friend, Wilma Mabe  also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Vestie Pennington Phillips, D. March 16, 2012

Mrs. Vestie Pennington Phillips age 98, of Lansing, died on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson. Mrs. Phillips was born on April 16, 1913 in Ashe County, NC to the late Issac and Mary Miller Pennington. Including her parents Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Phillips. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Jim Greer, Rev. Jim Francis and Rev. Larry Peak. Burial will follow in Phillips Hamm Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by: Son, Carl Dean Phillips of Lansing, sister, Minnie Eldreth of PA also surviving are two grandchildren, Billy Phillips, Gwynn Phillips, two great-grandchildren, Brian Phillips, Chelsie Bearfield, two great-great grandchildren, Sophia Cottongin, Hunter Cottongin and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Miller Stanley, D. March 17, 2012

Mrs. Annie Miller Stanley age 89, of Lansing, NC died on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Stanley was born on September 21, 1922 in Ashe County, NC to the late Jonathan and Amanda Greer Miller. Including her parents Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by Brother, Everett Miller, Sister, Gertrude Davis and Husband, Harley Elwood Stanley. Mrs. Stanley was a member of New Home Baptist Church. She loved gardening, quilting, cooking and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Minister Danny Miller, Rev. Joey McClure, Rev. Lundy Finley, Jr. and Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Stanley is survived by: five daughters – Georgia Blevins, Minnie  Blevins, Dorothy Cline, Brenda Key all of Lansing, Gaye Jones of Crumpler, son – Harry “Bud” Stanley of Lansing, brother – Adam Miller of Kennett Square, PA; also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
