Albert Pate Gambill, D. June 10, 2012.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 10, 2012, Albert Pate Gambill, 79, passed from this life in the same way he had lived, quietly and simply.

Born on May 12, 1933 in Mountain City, TN to Smith and Charlotte Gouge Gambill, Pate had lived most of his adult life in the Big Laurel community of Creston, NC.
Until illness prohibited most of his activities, he attended Rainbow Mennonite Church in Mountain City. He was always a hard worker and spent 25 years at Blue Ridge Shoe Company in Mountain City before going to Charleston Forge in Boone, NC until his retirement 14 years ago. He spent recent years enjoying his great-grandchildren every chance he got.

Always an outdoorsman, Pate enjoyed hunting and fishing and he took pride in his Cherokee heritage from his great-grandmother.

In addition to his parents, Pate was preceded in death by his brothers, James (Jim) Gambill who was killed in action in the Korean War, Roy, Tobe and Henry Gambill; and sister, Mary Gambill, all of Mountain City.
Pate is survived by his faithful wife of 57 years, Effie Farmer Gambill, who devoted her life to caring for him since his illness; son, Terry Gambill of the home, Steve and wife Sandi Gambill of Mooresville, NC and Gary and wife Angie Gambill of Mountain City; grandchildren, Chris Gambill of Johnson City, TN, Brittany Dorman and Ryan Gambill of Mountain City, and Landen, Anna Kathryn and Hollyn Gambill of Mooresville; great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Carson Dorman of Mountain City; sister, Ruth Potter of Mountain City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, June 13 at the Big Laurel Mennonite Church in Creston. Funeral services will follow at 8 with Willie Edwards and Larry Denny officiating. Burial will follow on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in the Osborne Cemetery in Creston. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews. The men’s Sunday’s School class at Rainbow Mennonite Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Always a pillar of strength and stability to his family, his passing leaves a hole in the hearts and lives of those who loved him. Rest well, Dad. Your work on earth is done.

Robert Bill Hamm

Robert “Bill” Hamm, D. June 9, 2012
Mr. Robert Bill Hamm, age 75, of Creston, passed away Saturday morning, June 9, 2012 at Watauga Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 3:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Graybeal officiating. Burial will follow in Calhoun Cemetery in Big Springs.

The Family will receive friends from 1:00 til 3:00 prior to the service at Boone Family.

Mr. Hamm was born in Ashe County on March 27, 1937 to the late Elzie Ham and Dorothy Paris Calhoun. He was a member of Iron Heritage Tractor Club Member and won two trophies. He loved to go to car auctions and raising pigeons.

He is survived by his wife; Marietta Hamm of 55 years; one son; Bobby Hamm of Creston; one daughter; Shirley Miller of Lansing; a grandmother; Lottie Calhoun of Jefferson; Step-mother; Hazel Ham of Elkton, Maryland; two brothers; Herbert Lewis of Lansing, and EJ Ham of South Carolina; four sisters; Brenda Miller of Warrensville, Betty Dougherty of Creston, Emma Jean Ham of Lansing, and Geraldine McNeill of Lansing; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Doris Elaine Rudolph Christy, D. June 9, 2012
Mrs. Doris Elaine Rudolph Christy, age 96, of Asheville, NC, formerly of Ashe County, died on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Christy was born on June 26, 1915 in Wheaton, IN to Hugo and Katherine Rudolph. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Raymond Christy. Mrs. Christy was a homemaker.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 4:00 pm atAshelawn Memorial Garden with interment to follow.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Monday, June 11, 2012 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Christy is survived by: Son, Michael David Christy of Asheville, NC, Daughter, Patricia Copus of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Daughter, Virginia Christy of Greensboro, NC; also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ralph Gerald Bare, D. June 8, 2012
Mr. Ralph Gerald Bare, age 76 of Laurel Springs passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2012 at 2:00pm at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Goss & David VanHoy officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.
The Bare family will receive friends Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Bare was born in Ashe County on October 16, 1935 to Hazel Stringer Bare and the late Clarence Fields Bare. He served in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Edith McNeill Bare of Laurel Springs; one son, Scott Bare and wife Shana of Creedmoor; mother, Hazel Bare of Laurel Springs; one sister, Kay Perkins and husband John of Jefferson; two grandchildren, Justin Bare and Alex Bare of Creedmoor; two nieces; four nephews.

Ella Mae Hodgson Roten, D. June 8, 2012
Mrs. Ella Mae Hodgson Roten, age 77, of Laurens, South Carolina passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 4:00pm at Mt. Paddy Church with Rev. Tim Roten officiating. Burial will follow in the Kemp-Lewis Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00pm on Sunday, two hours prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Roten was born in Creston, NC on Monday, July 16, 1934 to the late McKinley and Myrtle Sheets Hodgson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Raleigh Roten.

She is survived by: a son, Walter Roten and wife, Karen, of Laurens, SC; two daughters, Ruby Jean McBride of Simpsonville and Mary Elizabeth Mickleboro and husband, Glen, of Roswell, GA; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Paula Lee Badger Houck

Paula Lee Badger Houck, D. June 7, 2012
Mrs. Paula Lee Badger Houck age 79, of West Jefferson, NC died on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Houck was born on August 12, 1932 in Beckley, WV. Mrs. Houck was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Dickson Houck Jr. Mrs. Houck was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved to crochet. Special thanks to Ashe Memorial Hospital staff for the wonderful and caring attention they gave to her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Beaver Creek Christian Church by Pastor Jim Dawes & Rev. Michael Carter. Burial will follow in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Mrs. Gladys Calloway Perkins, age 105, of Todd, passed away Wednesday morning, June 6, 2012 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2:00pm on Friday 8, 2012 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with J.E. Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in the Calloway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 12:30-2:00pm on Friday at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Perkins was born in Ashe County on May 14, 1907 to the late Joseph Calloway and Nettie Shoun. She was a Homemaker.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Graham Perkins; three brothers and two sisters; and an infant son; Max.

She is survived by one son; James Perkins of Lawrenceville, GA; four daughters; Mary Purser of Kannapolis, Linda Roland and husband Max of Warrensville, Ann Hart of Wilkesboro, and Jeannette Eller and husband Jerry of Todd; four grandchildren; Gerald Greer of Salisbury, NC, Sharon McDuffie of Landis, NC, Kevin Weaver of Wilkesboro, and Jason Eller of Todd; ten great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Wilma Ilean Howell Wood age 79, of Todd, died on Monday, June 4, 2012 at Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson. Mrs. Wood was born on August 23, 1932 in Ashe County to Richard and Carrie Grubb Howell. Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Maggie Ham, brother, Eddison Howell, two sons, Bryson Lee Wood and Ricky Wood. Mrs. Wood was a member of Baldwin Community Church. She loved to work in the garden and can.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home by Rev. Doug Hardin and Rev. Bill Manley. Burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday prior to the service.

Joel Mark Weaver

Joel Mark Weaver, D. June 3, 2012
Joel Mark Weaver age 79, of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, June 3rd, at the Regal Heights Nursing-Rehab Center in Hockessin, Delaware from complications of pneumonia.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Snyder officiating. Entombment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer with Military Rites.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00pm on Monday, prior to the funeral service.
Joel was a retiree of the General Motors Corp, Wilmington, Delaware. He was a devout Christian and served many years as bible teacher, deacon, board member, and song leader at his church. He opened his home to many who were in need, including several foster children. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his love for and dedication to his family, and for his in depth bible knowledge. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
Joel is pre-deceased by his parents, Lester E and Bessie P Weaver; one daughter, Dina Joann Weaver; one infant son, Richard Mark Weaver; three sisters, Vester Graybell, Lucille Campbell, and Pauline Prillman; and one brother, Homer Weaver.

Joel is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Ilene Weaver, also from Landenberg, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Norma Jean Fratoni and her husband, Sam, from South Portland, Maine; one son, Richard Weaver, from Elkton, Maryland, and one daughter of the heart, Ashley Ramos, from Landenberg, Pennsylvania; two grandsons, Matthew Snyder and Benjamin Fratoni both from South Portland, Maine; one brother, Conley Weaver and his wife Louella from Mountain City, Tennessee; two sisters, Jewell Weaver and Winnie Jean Greer both from West Jefferson, North Carolina; and many brother and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Richard Rock McCoy

Richard “Rock” McCoy, D. June 1, 2012
Mr. Richard Tunney “Rock” McCoy age 83, of West Jefferson, NC died on Friday, June 1, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. McCoy was born on February 16, 1929 in Dante, VA to Jim and Ida Grizzell McCoy. Mr. McCoy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Minnie Belle McCoy, three sisters and one brother. Mr. McCoy was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. McCoy served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He loved his family very much.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Jim Greer & Rev. Larry Peak. Burial will follow in Perry Cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.
