Mrs. Helen Creo Aloia, age 91, of West Jefferson, NC died on Monday, January 7, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Aloia was born on February 14, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Frank and Assunta Creo. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Aloia was also preceded in death by her husband, John Aloia, two brothers, two sisters, three grandchildren, and two sons-in-law, Robert Ocuto and Santos Ficara.

Mrs. Aloia was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She ran a business at Shatley Springs and was a volunteer at Ashe Services for Aging. She lived a very full life and loved spending time with her family and her dog Ginger, playing bingo, and needlepoint.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church by Father James Stuhrenberg. Entombment will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Aloia is survived by: Son, Michael Aloia and wife Cindee of West Jefferson, Daughter, Helen Leserra and husband Michael of West Jefferson, Daughter, Grace Webb and husband Bill of Marion, Daughter, Pat Ocuto of Jefferson, Daughter, Barbara Ficara of Florida, Daughter, Susan Kitson and husband Thomas of Jefferson, Sister, Jean Platt of New York; also surviving are ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Joseph Edward Powers age 73, of Lansing, NC died Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.

Mr. Powers was born on December 2, 1939 in Ashe County, to the late Raymond Basil and Ruth Howell Powers. Mr. Powers was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Sturgill and Virginia Venable. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He loved going to church and was ordained as a minister in 1965.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Brother Ralph Smith, Rev. Rex Hall & Rev. Ronda Rash. Burial will follow in Powers Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday prior to the service..

Thomas Wellinton Trivette, D. Jan. 6, 2013
Thomas Wellington Trivette, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother passed away January 6, 2013 in Raleigh, NC, at the age of 94.

He was born in Todd, North Carolina on September 7, 1918, to the late Marshall Monroe Trivette and Celia Adams Trivette. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army for 4½ years in the United States and Europe.

While on leave in December 1943 he married the love of his life, Ruth McGuire, and they lived in Todd for a number of years before moving to West Jefferson, NC. He enjoyed a career as an electrician until his retirement in 1982.

He was an avid gardener, growing a variety of vegetables in such abundance that he and Ruth would spend much time canning and freezing the excess to be shared with family and friends. He started an apple orchard of which he was very proud, planting and grafting a variety of apples.

Family was extremely important to Tom and Ruth, and they delighted in spending time with their children and their families. He was affectionately known as “Gramps”, not only by his grandchildren, but by many people who knew and loved him.

Tom is survived by 4 children: Joyce Benson of Raleigh, Sharon Murphy and husband Michael of Raleigh, Barbara Gibbs of Knightdale, and Larry Trivette of Todd and special friend Elizabeth Chesnut of Raleigh.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Jennifer O’Loughlin and husband Robert of Wake Forest, Matthew Benson and wife Kellianne of Charlotte, Joseph Murphy and Catherine Murphy of Raleigh, Rikki Gibbs, Ruth Gibbs and Ruby Gibbs of Knightdale, Kristina Trivette and fiancé Andy Heggeman of Black Mountain, Jaime Roper and husband Stephen of Yellowstone National Park, WY, and Celia Trivette of Todd; and 7 great-grandchildren: Ryan and Emily O’Loughlin of Wake Forest, Ashleigh and Allison Murphy of Raleigh, and Katelyn, Matthew and Caroline Benson of Charlotte.

His dear sister, Ruby Trivette of Todd, also survives, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends of the family, Grace Torrey and sons John and Vincent of Raleigh. Elizabeth’s daughter Clarice has also grown to know and love him.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Ruth McGuire Trivette, as well as his brothers Page, Joseph, George, John and James Trivette and his sister Mary Trivette.

Funeral services will be held at South Fork Baptist Church in Todd on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 am with Rev. Homer Murdock officiating. Burial will follow in the Howell Cemetery, Todd. The family will receive friends at the church between 10:00 and 11:00 am on Saturday prior to the funeral service.

Ruby Evon Miller, age 59, of Fleetwood died Saturday, January 5th, 2013 at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carroll Flannery and Rev. Denton Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 at 12:30 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the Boone Family Funeral Home prior to the service.

Mrs. Miller is survived by six sisters, Mary Miller of the Home, Gertrude Flannery of Fleetwood, Joann Flannery and husband Carroll of Fleetwood, Luefay Trivette of Fleetwood, Minnie Carrier of Claremont, Gladys Bentley and husband Bill of Lenoir; Two Brothers, Denver Miller of the Home, Burl Miller of Fleetwood; Several nieces and nephews & a Special Niece & Caretaker Debbie Keller of the home.
Ruby Evon Miller was born on September 13, 1953 to the late John Frank and Josie Proffitt Miller.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Arlie Miller; a sister, Lundy Trivette

Mrs. Johnsie Marie Miller Dancy age 92 years and 10 months of Jefferson the Glendale Springs Community passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Dancy was born on March 3, 1920 in Ashe County, NC to Columbus “Lum” Michael and Ida Belcher Miller. Mrs. Dancy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dennis Dancy, son, Jimmy Lum Dancy and all her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Dancy was a member of Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church. She loved being a homemaker, was a wonderful cook and she enjoyed making jelly and jam to give family and friends. She was a very giving and loving person to everyone.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Sidney Crunk, Rev. Charles McCoy and Rev. Russell Sheets. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Guzman was born in Jerequaro Gto, Mexico on June 28, 1943 to the late Pioquinto Ruiz and Catalina Ledezma. She was a Homemaker.

Mrs. Guzman is survived by three sons, Miguel Hernandez Ruiz, of Warrensville, Victor Apolinar Hernandez Ruiz, of Warrensville and Jesus Hernandez Guzman, of Jefferson; two daughters, Eloisa Hernandez Ruiz, of Warrensville and Veronica Hernandez Guzman, of Warrensville; four brothers , Serafin Ruiz Ledezma, of West Jefferson, Andres Ruiz Ledezma, of Mexico, Esteban Ruiz Ledezma, of Mexico and Fortino Ruiz Ledezma of Mexico; two sisters, Rosa Ruiz Ledezma of Mexico and Carmen Ruiz Ledezma, of Mexico; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Ronder Lee Wood age 82, of Todd, NC died on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wood was born February 15, 1930 in Ashe County, to Edward and Carrie McGuire Wood. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Wilma Howell Wood, son, Ricky Wood and infant son, Bryson Wood. Mr. Wood was a member of Baldwin Community Church. He loved working in the woods.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Baldwin Community Church by Rev. Bill Manley and Matthew Wood. Burial will follow in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Furches and Rev. Jim Rash officiating. Burial will follow in the Kemp-Lewis Cemetery.

Mrs. Rash was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, August 17, 1920 to the late Arthur and Aletha Black Graham. She was a Homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Delmer Rash; a daughter, Lori Lawrence and husband, Kevin, of West Jefferson; two grandchildren, Amber Dancy and husband, Eric, of Laurel Springs and Justin Lawrence and wife, Jessica of Lansing; two great-grandchildren, Cody Dancy and Thorin Lawrence; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Marie Severt Miller, age 81, of West Jefferson passed away Saturday morning, December 29, 2012 at Ashe Assisted Living.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 1:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Severt Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 two hours prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Miller was born in Ashe County on Sunday, July 26, 1931 to the late Gaither and Saddie Mash Severt. She retired from Sara Lee Knit Products. In her spare time, Marie liked to quilt and crochet.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jonas Miller on August 7, 2012; three sisters, Marlene Dudley, Mazie Wyatt and Mae Miller; three brothers, Claude Severt, Hardin Severt and Bill Severt.

Mrs. Miller is survived by a son, Lloyd Miller and wife, Doni, of West Jefferson; three daughters, Betty Lambert, of West Jefferson, Pauline Patrick and husband, Larry, of North Wilkesboro and Becky Whybrew and Husband, Greg, of Pfafftown, NC; a sister, Mamie Turner, of Rural Hall, NC; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 3 great, great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. J.K. Bell, age 74, of Laurel Springs, passed away Thursday morning, December 27, 2012 at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 11:00am at Scottsville Baptist Church with Rev. Reeves Jones officiating. Graveside service will be held on Saturday at 3:00pm at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00am on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Mr. Bell was born April 17, 1938 to the late Theodore Noel Bell and Nellie Mae Mason. He was a truck driver.

Mr. Bell is preceded in death by a son; David Bell.

He is survived by his wife; Nancy Horton Bell; two sons; K.K. Bell, Jr. and wife Kim of Bessemer City, NC and Jeffery Bell and wife PJ of Cherryville, NC; one daughter; Kelly Crook and husband Keith of Laurel Springs; one brother; Quentin Bell of Laurel Springs; two sisters; Darlene Erisley of Gastonia and Nellie Ann Kinsey of Michigan; three grandchildren; Kalia Crook, Kara Crook, and Brittany Jones; one great-grandchild; Jonah Herms; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
