Velma Marsh Poe

Velma Marsh Poe, D. Nov. 22, 2012
Velma Ray Marsh Poe, age 86 of Laurel Springs, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Margate Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Poe was born in Ashe County on April 4, 1925 to the late Charlie and Callie Shatley Marsh. She was married November 21, 1951 to the late Earl W. Poe for 59 years. Including her parents and husband Mrs. Poe was preceded in death by; two brothers Herb and Fred Marsh; three sisters Hazel Miller, Louise Bare and Blanche Marsh.

She was a Christian, a loving and caring mother, a wife, a problem solver, and a friend. She loved, to care for and nurture children. She was an industrious person. After retiring for the evening and after reading a passage from her bible she would pick a craft such as making a quilt to keep busy. Her fondest memory was making a baby blanket for her one and only grandson, now a college Senior, majoring in Engineering at the NC State University.

When she was first diagnosed with cancer, she took the news calmly. But she was determined to fight the disease and win. She did win. For many years she managed her illness and lived the remainder of her year’s cancer free. She had many happy and productive years. She continued to make crafts; she worked in her church, and she took care of her aging family. Later in life a stroke nearly ended her life. Thanks to the grace of God she survived that stroke and many more seizures before succumbing to the disease.

On her last day with us, she spent her final hours with her eldest son. She went peacefully and the family took comfort knowing that she was at peace with her Creator. Somehow it helped ease the pain of losing her, our mother, our friend, reunited in eternity with her husband, her mother and father and all her brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Poe is survived by two sons; Earl William Poe, Jr. of Laurel Springs, NC and Gary L. Poe of Cornelius, NC. One grandson John M. Poe of Cornelius, NC and numerous nieces and nephews who aided and cared for her throughout the last years of her life.
