Thomas Baxter Cox, D. April 24, 2012

Mr. Thomas Baxter Cox, better known as “Tom”, age 68, of Lenoir passed away Tuesday morning, April 24, 2012 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.

Graveside service will be held Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00pm at the Lewis-Sturgill Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Roark officiating.

Mr. Cox was born Caldwell County, North Carolina on Wednesday, May 5, 1943 to the late Clarence and Virginia Crane Cox.

He is survived by two sons; David Cox and wife Amanda of Creston, and Mark Cox of Laurel Springs; two daughters; Carolyn Jael Cox of Fleetwood, and Virgina Spears of Lenoir; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary Huffman Viers

Mary Huffman Viers, D. April 23, 2012

Mrs. Mary Huffman Viers, age 71, of Laurel Springs, passed away Monday morning, April 23, 2012 at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 12:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Blevins, Rev. Lonnie Pruitt and Rev. David Greer officiating. Burial will follow in the Bare Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-12:00pm on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Viers was born in Ashe County on June 23, 1940 to the late Lamar Sheets and Marie Huffman. She worked at a couple of different textile companies, Jefferson Apparel and Hanes. She also worked a Greenfield Restaurant. She enjoyed working in her flowers. She attended church at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, of 54 years of marriage, Ray Viers; three sons, Johnny Viers and wife, Debbie, of Laurel Springs, David Viers and wife, Linda, of Columbus, NC and Michael Viers and wife, Diane, of West Jefferson; three daughters, Debbie Cozart and husband, Donny, of Crumpler, Sandra Hamm and husband, Tim, of Lansing and Jennifer Calhoun and husband, Freddie, of Crumpler; a brother, Clarence Hitchcock, of Havre de Grace, MD; three sisters, Shelby Graham, of Rising Sun, MD, Betty Parsons, of Statesville, NC and Shirley Workman, of Havre de Grace, MD; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Rev. J.C. Norton

Rev. J. C. Norton, D. April 23, 2012

Rev. J. C. Norton age 83, of Crumpler, NC died on Monday, April 23, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital .  Rev. Norton was born on July 8, 1928 in New Hanover Co., NC to John Casper Sr. and Ada Ballard Norton. Rev. Norton was preceded in death by his parents and sister, grandson:  Austin Ring, Alma Stone. Rev. Norton served in the US Army during WWII. After moving to Ashe County, Rev. Norton worked for Phoenix Chair Company and as a security guard at Jefferson Landing.. He served as a police officer before moving here. He married Faye Coleman at Seagate Baptist Church in Wilmington.  He earned his seminary degree from Duke University.  He served as chaplain for the hospital, jail and hospice.  He was an Elder at Faith Fellowship for many years.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 4:00 pm at the Faith Fellowship by Dr. Dean Simpson & Rev. Elliott Osowitt with military rites.

Rev. Norton is survived by:

His wife: Julia Faye Coleman Norton

2 sons: John Norton of Wilmington & Wallace Pearson of Wilkesboro

3 daughters: Julia Dale Wood of Wilmington,  Karen Rash of West Jefferson, & Lori Ring of Charlotte

10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

John Wilbur McGuire, D. April 21, 2012

Mr. John Wilbur McGuire, age 39, of Warrensville passed away Saturday night, April 21, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 3:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. JD Walton and Rev. Tommy Dollar officiating. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00pn on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mr. McGuire was born in Ashe County on Wednesday, June 14, 1972 to the late James Wilbur McGuire and Josephine Parsons McGuire.

He is survived by his mother, Josephine Parsons McGuire; one sister, Nancy Worley, of Todd; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Clyde Edna Wilcox Osborne

Clyde Edna Wilcox Osborne, D. April 19, 2012

Mrs. Clyde Edna Wilcox Osborne age 101, of Jefferson, NC died Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Segraves Care Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Osborne was born October 4, 1910 in Ashe County, to the late William and Allie Stansberry Wilcox. Mrs. Osborne was preceded in death by her husband: Barney Osborne; 6 sisters:  Mamie Weaver, Carrie Blevins Miller, Flora Sullivan, Mae Ham, June Mullins and Norma Kilby and 2 brothers: Lee and Wayne Wilcox. She was known to many as Aunt Clyde or Ms. Clyde.  She was an old time cook who enjoyed preparing meals and making pies for her family and friends.  Special thanks to the staff of Segraves Care Center for the care they gave to Mrs. Osborne for the past 6 ½ years.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Dean Shepherd. Burial followed in Osborne Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Sunday, prior to the service.

Mrs. Osborne is survived by:

1 Sister, Lessie Roop of Whitetop, VA

several nieces and nephews.

Gerthy Gertrude Bunton Cox, D. April 17, 2012

Mrs. Gerthy Gertrude Cox age 93, of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Segraves Care Center.  Mrs. Cox was born on October 25, 1918 in Johnson County, TN to William Columbus and Sarah Cook Bunton. In addition to her parents Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Cox.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Wayne Jones. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday prior to the service.

Mrs. Cox is survived by:

7 daughters:, Jean Grayson of Mountain City, TN,  Belva Lance & Wilma Lee May both of Zionville, NC, Stella Davis of Bellington, WV,  Mildred Cox of Glendale Springs, NC,  Judy Sullivan and husband Dave & Sherry Cox all of South Port, FL

5 sons: William “Bill” Cox and wife Joyce of Akron, OH,  Denver Cox and wife Sun of Hartville, OH,  Meredith ) Cox and wife Cathy of Canton, OH,  Joseph Cox of Dothan, AL & Gary Cox of Boone, NC

also surviving are 21 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
