May 31, 2012. Work began this week constructing the new road that will go up to the Capstone Collegiate Communities (CCC) development, The Cottages of Boone, on Poplar Grove Road South off of Highway 105. The development, when finished, could be the largest student housing community in Watauga County.

Blythe Construction is currently working on the road. Once that is complete, CCC will bring in their own construction team to begin building the cottages and the lodge.

According to Joe Furman, Watauga County planning and inspections director, CCC will likely seek building permits in August of this year. He also added that the developers are hoping to have the complex open for renting in mid- to late-August 2013, shortly before the fall semester begins at Appalachian State University.

“They’re going to have basically a year to build [109] buildings,” said Furman.

The development will have 894 beds, offered in three-, four- or five-bedroom cottages, as well as in one-, three- or four-bedroom lodge apartments. 971 parking spaces will be available at the development. Furman said that number of parking spaces well exceeded the requirements set forth by the county. Originally, the plans were for 859 beds and 916 parking spaces when the project was approved by the Planning Board in February, but the plans were later expanded and re-approved.

There are also plans for a swimming pool and fitness center at the Cottages of Boone.

According to Furman, the property will have private on-sight wells and a sewer system, as well as a water detention system.

Bus services will be provided by AppalCART. Furman said CCC has already established a contract with AppalCART to be added to their routes once the units on the property are available for rental next summer.

CCC hopes to rent out the cottages and apartments starting at around $500 to $600 per bedroom, but the final decision on prices has not been made.
