Weekly Watauga Farmers’ Market Update; Local Produce and Fruits on Sale This Wednesday and Saturday

July 25, 2012. Every week from May to October you will find quality locally farmed meats, organic produce, fresh cut flowers and hardy local plants, delicous edibles and a wide variety of crafts.

Special events this Saturday include vermicomposting with Tracy Myhalyk in PHARMN’s Children’s Area. Pick out some worm bin and kits for making your own worm composting habitat.

This Saturday at the market, vendors will be offering:

Chicken pies as well as new fruit pies made with local blueberries and apples from Fishel’s Moravian Pies.

Incredible chocolate coconut maple pecan bread pudding with a pecan praline sauce! Utterly divine! And gluten-free frittata from Lulu’s Sweet & Savory.

Certified organic lacinato kale, lemon and diva cucumbers, patty pan squash, costata romanesca zuchini, red chard, bull’s blood beets, eggplants (fairy tale, hansel, and machiaw), heirloom tomatoes, and micro greens from Sunshine Cove Farm.

Granola, vegetables, sunflowers and honey (including sourwoood) from Faith Mountain Farm.

A variety of heirloom tomatoes including Cherokee purple, indigo rose, yellow and red brandywine and chocolate stripes, in addition to blue and red potatoes and squash from Zydeco Moon Organic Farm.

This Wednesday, July 25, the market is having “Senior Day” at the market to show appreciation for our Senior customers. They will have live music, refreshments and a cooking demo from Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture and Appalachian District Health Department, as well as other activities. 

Don’t forget that every Wednesday you can find some of the same wonderful local foods and produce at the Wednesday Market from 8 a.m. to noon at Horn in the West.

The 2012 High Country Farm Tour

Visit some of the farms that sell at Watauga County Farmers’ Market (including Creeksong Farm, Faith Mountain Farm, Mountain Works Farm, Zydeco Moon Organic Farm, Ripshin Goat Dairy, Maverick Farm, Moretz’s Mountain Orchard, New Life Farm, Springhouse Farm and Watauga River Farm) on this year’s High Country Farm Tour on August 4 – 5th, 2-6 p.m. The Farm Tour is also seeking volunteers, offering a bike tour and for the first time, offering a special VIP-guided tour with a special guest for new or future farmers.
