Weekly Watauga Farmers’ Market Update; Local Produce and Fruits on Sale This Wednesday and Saturday

July 18, 2012. Every week from May to October you will find quality locally farmed meats, organic produce, fresh cut flowers and hardy local plants, delicous edibles and a wide variety of crafts. This Saturday at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market, a number of vendors will have a variety of seasonal local produce and fresh fruits from High Country farms and orchards on sale for customers. 

Special Events this Saturday will include live music from Garrett Price and Megan Sheppard, a local food cooking demo from BRWIA/ADHA and a Kids Mini-Market in the Children’s Area where children 12 and under set up their wares – art, crafts, plants, flowers and produce they have made or raised. No baked items please.

This Saturday at the market vendors will be offering:

A variety of delicious heirloom tomatoes – Cherokee purple, red and yellow Brandywines, indigo rose, zapotec and Cherokee green – green bell peppers, a variety of summer squash and blue and red potatoes from Zydeco Moon Organic Farm.

Micro greens, lemon cukes, patty pan squash, eggplants, lacinato kale, red chard, bull’s blood beets, and a few tomatoes from Sunshine Cove Farm.

Scrumptious bread puddings and a creative gluten-free fritatta, all fresh baked and warm from the oven, from Lulu’s Sweet & Savory.

Delicious gourmet dried vegan fettucine, in ten flavors (great with summer veggies!) from Pasta Wench.

The first sourwood honey, a wide range of colors of sunflowers, kale, swiss chard, yellow squash, zucchini, signature whole grain breads baked from freshly ground certified chemical free flour, variety of muffins, high energy chewy balls and granola from Faith Mountain Farm.

Fresh bagels, sourdough whole wheat sticky buns, swedish almond-cinnamon rolls (kanelbullar), white chocolate-almond sourdough croissants, sourdough pain au chocola, baker’s cranberry granola and savory chop blocks. 12 or more varieties of hearth breads and whole grain sandwich breads are available – sourdough baguettes, pain au levain, whole grain miche, country french bread, polish rye, jewish rye, ciabatta, broom bread, bunflower-sesame-flax seed bread, austrian baguettes, chocolate babka, cinnamon babka and more from Owl Creek Breadworks.

Blacksmith-made, hand- forged home & garden decor including wrought iron plant hangers with matching brackets, bird feeders, whirligig wind vanes, and architectural hardware by Tom Wooten of Fiddler Forge.

Lovely long-lasting ‘Picasso’ Calla lilies along with a dark eggplant ones. zinnias, dahlias and hydrangea and herb transplants from Shady Grove Gardens.

2012 High Country Farm Tour

Visit some of the farms that sell at Watauga County Farmers’ Market (including Creeksong Farm, Faith Mountain Farm, Mountain Works Farm, Zydeco Moon Organic Farm, Ripshin Goat Dairy, Maverick Farm, Moretz’s Mountain Orchard, New Life Farm, Springhouse Farm and Watauga River Farm) on this year’s High Country Farm Tour. August 4 and 5, 2-6 p.m.. The Farm Tour is also seeking volunteers, offering a bike tour, and for the first time, offering a special VIP-guided tour with a special guest for new or future farmers. The Farmers’ Market runs rain or shine, every Saturday morning May through October from 8 a.m. until noon, and every 
Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. until noon June through September, and is always held in the Horn in the West parking lot.
