Weekend Roundup: Things to Do This Weekend in the High Country; Check ‘em Out and Make Plans Sept. 6-8

Sept. 6, 2013. The High Country has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors, especially in the summer months. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Friday, Sept. 6

Friday evening is First Friday Art Crawl in Downtown Boone. To check out all of the fun activities on King Street tonight, check out our Art Crawl Round Up here

Art Mart Grand Opening: Art Mart, which recently relocated to its new King Street location, will use First Friday Art Crawl as a fantastic night for their official grand opening. Refreshments will be served as guests explore the new location and store layout, and mingle among art supplies, pieces and more. Art Mart is located at 681 King Street across from the downtown Post Office. 

Concerts at the Jones House: As always, the Jones House, located at 604 West King Street, will host their Friday Night Concerts at the Jones House featuring Kim France, Jon Davis, the Dashboard Hula Boys and Lazybirds. Keep in mind, however, that this week’s concert begins at 4:30 instead of the usual 5 p.m. kickoff. In addition to the concert, the Jones House will be hosting the grand reveal of the “Visions of Peace” exhibit as part of the International Day of Peace monthlong celebration. 

Grand Opening Celebration at the Turchin Center: The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, located at 423 West King Street, will host a grand opening celebration of the exhibit “Hugh Morton: An Uncommon Retrospective.” This collection of photographs from the beloved, late local photographer showcases his lesser known photographs depicting the world as he knew it throughout his lifetime. 

Wilkesboro’s Weekly Open Air Market: Wilkesboro hosts a weekly Open Air Market on West Main Street in the heart of historic downtown, offering farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and plants, as well as handmade crafts. The market’s focus is on supporting and sustaining the local farm and artisan community. The market takes place every Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., from April 19 through Oct. 18. Admission is free. The town of Wilkesboro will also provide an open mike opportunity during the regular Open Air Market Fridays for local and regional musicians. Open mike signups will be available weekly April through October, not including the Third Friday Events, which are held April through August. Bluegrass at Todd General Store: Join us every Friday from late May until Thanksgiving and listen to a variety of live Bluegrass Acts. Dinner will be served at 6pm and music starts at 7pm. Come early to be sure you get a seat. 

Music in the Valle: Join Valle Crucis Community Park as we celebrate the 11th anniversary season of Music in the Valle! All concerts begin at 7:00 and end at sundown. Admission is free, but a $5 donation per person to the park is recommended. Pets are welcome but must be leashed. There is absolutely no smoking allowed in the park. Bring a picnic, a blanket or chairs, and enjoy! 

Saturday, Sept. 7

Todd Ruritan Club Barbecue Fundraiser: The first Saturday of each month through October, the Todd Ruritan Club will host a barbecue fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. at the South Fork Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children.The next and last fundraiser for the year will be on Oct. 5.

Watauga High School Reunion: The class of 2003 from Watauga High School will host their reunion at the Boone Fairgrounds at 5:30 p.m. Cost to attend is $40 per person.

Watauga County Farmers’ Market: Every Saturday morning from May to November you will find quality locally farmed meats, fresh produce, artisan cheeses, dried and fresh cut flowers, hardy local plants, delicious edibles, and a wide variety of quality crafts.

10th Annual Grandfather Mountain Kidfest: Guided hikes, games, stoytellers, music, and fun designed to get kids excited about the nature and culture of the NC Mountains. Included with park admission.

Lenoir Downtown Farmers’ Market: The Lenoir Downtown Farmer’s Market is a local producers only market. All goods are grown, made, designed or processed by the market vendors. Our vendors include vintners, local grass fed beef and pork, free range eggs, goats milk soaps and lotions, honey, alpaca wools, various produce, local arts and crafts, heritage eggs, herbs and spices, both living and dried, Herbville and Crane teas and sauces, just to name a few. We also feature a variety of live music including Celtic music, classic acoustic rock, Jazz saxophone, and many more. Need another reason? Here it is. Our market often features a specific product from one of our vendors, and we’ll be grilling up something almost every weekend, chicken wings, 100% beef hot dogs, grilled corn, tomatoes, and asparagus! Don’t miss this chance to meet and support your local farmers and producers, and help keep North Carolina foods close to home.

Art in the Park: Art in the Park was created in 1962 by a handful of area artists and craftspeople to showcase local talent. Now, Art in the Park is host to 90 artisans at each show. Some of the best local and regional artists and craftspeople showcase their handcrafted jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and more.

Sunday, Sept. 8

Girl Scout Fishing Derby: The Girl Scout Fishing Derby will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Cost is $6 per scout. To register, call 828-355-5222.

Concert in the Park- ASU Gospel Choir: Free Concert in the Park featuring the Appalachian State University Gospel Choir. Bring a chair or a blanket for seating in the grass. Pets welcome at bench area in the front of the park.

Music on the Veranda: Meet up at the beautiful Green Park Inn for music on the veranda every Sunday. 

Blowing Rock Jazz Society Concert: The Blowing Rock Jazz Society will hold a concert at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. 

Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce Presents- Homes in the Village: Visitors to Blowing Rock’s popular “Art in the Park” a juried arts and crafts show with 90 booths that occurs one Saturday monthly from May until October, will have the rare opportunity to sign up for a self-guided tour of selected Village homes that are offered for sale. Ten local real estate companies have joined together to present “Homes in the Village”.  Each month six properties, ranging from small cottages and condos to grand designer homes, will be open for viewing. Open Houses will be hosted from 11:00am until 3:00pm.

Mile High Music Fest at Beech Mountain: The Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Mile High Music Fest set to take place on Sept. 8 at the Beech Mountain Resort. The Mile High Music Fest will feature Randy Houser who is continuing to climb the Billboard Country Music Charts after his hits “How Country Feels,” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” reached the top five.  For more information, read our article here
