July 6, 2012. The High Country has so many wonderful events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Live Music

    Creedence Clearwater Revisited and Lee Brice at Kidd Brewer

Mix a legendary rock group with an up-and-coming country superstar, and you get a fresh take on some of classic rock’s most groundbreaking music— and the new sound of country with a hint of rock. The timeless sounds of Creedence Clearwater Revisited and the popular country stylings of Lee Brice complement each other in a way that resonates with the young— and the young at heart. Fireworks will start immediately following the concert.

    First Friday Art Crawl

Each month the Downtown Boone Development Association (DBDA) hosts the Art Crawl which happens every First Friday. Event hours are typically from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. with galleries and shops open until 7:30 p.m., restaurants and bars open until 10 p.m. or 2 a.m. and two late-night galleries, open on Art Crawl nights only, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Also, check out Art Crawl Presents… a music event featuring great local bands, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., at a new downtown location each month. Art Crawl: Food, Music, Shopping, Art & Spirits.

    Hayes School of Music Faculty Showcase Concert

The performing faculty of the Hayes School of Music, professional musicians as well as accomplished teachers, present a diverse program of solo and chamber music from the strings, woodwinds, brass and jazz repertoire. The concert will feature works by famous composers such as Malcolm Arnold and Béla Bartók, among others.

    Newland Riverwalk Summer Concert Series

Silvio Martinat playing big band swing will be at the Riverwalk this Friday. Check the schedule for rock and roll, 70s and 80s jam bands or Southern rock and blues. Vendors with hot dogs, pizza, sodas, water, desserts and more will be selling weekly.

    Concerts at the Jones House: Keith Ward, The Worthless Son-in-Laws & Possum Jenkins

The free Concert at the Jones House on Friday featuring cowboy poet Keith Ward, Indie-rock/alt-country band The Worthless Son-In-Laws and country-rock-blues trio, Potluck. Ward will begin at 5 p.m., followed by Worthless Son-In-Laws at 5:30 p.m., a First Friday reception at 6:30 p.m. and Potluck at 7:30 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own blanket or chair.

    Music in the Valle: Creekside Grass

The “Music in the Valle” Concert Series starts in June and continues each Friday evening through August at The Valle Crucis Community Park. Admission is free; bring a chair or a blanket and family & friends.

    Friday Night Bluegrass

Visit the Todd General Store and recapture a time when life was simple and genuine.  Meet the mountain folks and listen to talks of the railroad days as well as bluegrass every Friday.

    Todd Summer Music Series

Acoustic duo Dave Haney and Lisa Baldwin will return to Todd’s Free Summer Music Series in Cook Park in downtown Todd with their very talented sounds of bluegrass, traditional country, folk, contemporary arrangements as well as Lisa’s own songs. Bring a chair or blanket and the whole family and relax by the creek while you enjoy some mountain music at its best. The Todd Ruritan Club will be serving BBQ dinners nearby for those who come hungry.

    Sunday Jazz Brunch with Todd Wright & Friends at Canyons

Todd Wright, an Ambassador of Jazz for western North Carolina, joined the Appalachian State University music faculty in 1990. As Director of Jazz Studies he has been responsible for conducting Jazz Ensembles I and II, teaching courses in jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz piano, jazz tunes and coaching combos.

    Blowing Rock Jazz Society Concert
 
The Blowing Rock Jazz Society presents Larry Lapin with special guest Michelle Amato perform to their Live Jazz Show. The world-renowned jazz pianist and educator will bring his much respected talent to Blowing Rock. Joining the group for the evening will be Michael Holstein on bass, Rick Dilling on drums and award winning vocalist Michelle Amato.

    Mountain Home Music: Celtic Fiddle & Dance

April Verch, the two-time National Canadian Fiddle Champion, step-dancer and singer will be in Mountain Home Music’s presentation of Celtic Fiddle and Dance. She became the first woman in history to win both of Canada’s most prestigious fiddle championships, the Grand Masters and Canadian Open, and when Canada hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, April Verch was asked to represent her country’s music at the opening ceremonies.

    Fred’s Sunday Summer Concerts

Fred’s concerts present a plethora of great Bluegrass and Country music by accomplished local musicians, Rebecca Eggers-Gryder with Amantha Mill. Fred’s General Mercantile on Beech Mountain will host Fred’s Summer Sunday Concerts on five Sundays: July 8 to August 5 at 6:30 p.m. Some seats are provided, but bring a chair or blanket just in case.

    Alice in Wonderland: A Participation Play for Children

“Children will play trees in the forest, wickets in the Queen of Heart’s croquet game and various other roles,” said Director Suzanna Ziko, who also plays Martha Stuart in “Horn in the West.” Ziko is excited for children and parents alike to be a part of this familiar story. Alice will be played by 11-year-old Emma Tzotschew. Although her co-stars are adults, Emma will be joined on stage by other youth as they make their way through Wonderland.

    Ensemble Stage Presents The Complete History of America… (Abridged)

It’s 12,000 years in 6,000 fast-paced, zany seconds. From Columbus to Clinton, from Lewis and Clark to Reagan and Bush and from the Bering Straits to Bahgdad, The Complete History of America (Abridged) is the Marx Brothers meets The Daily Show spiced with the Three Stooges and Saturday Night Live. It’s sheer insanity!
