Watauga County Schools Will Celebrate National School Breakfast Week March 5-9 With Themed Meals

The week of March 5-9 is National School Breakfast Week and the Watauga County Schools cafeterias will celebrate the event with a different breakfast theme each day of the week. Watauga County Schools Child Nutrition Director Monica Adams says the week’s events are intended to remind everyone that “breakfast is a very important part of each day and children require a healthy start every day to learn and grow to their full potential.”
The first breakfast theme will be “Sticky Sweet Day” on March 5, when school cafeterias will feature breakfast items usually accompanied by syrup, such as pancakes, waffles, and French toast sticks. Tuesday is “Sunrise Sampler” with a menu of scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, toast, and orange wedges. On Wednesday, “Pizza Paradise Day” offers choices of breakfast pizza, pepperoni pizza, cheese pizza, or sausage pizza. Thursday is “Breakfast Sandwich Day” with a menu of scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage or ham, cheese, and biscuit or toast or tortilla. Friday concludes the week with “Breakfast Share Day,” when families and school employees are encouraged to join students for a breakfast featuring scrambled eggs, sausage patty, biscuit with gravy, and baked apples.
In addition to the featured menu items that change daily, school cafeterias offer the choices of juice, toast, cereal, and low fat or skim milk at breakfast each morning.
Throughout the week, school cafeterias will award prizes to students using randomly designated “lucky trays” and additional incentives will be offered in some schools.
Eating breakfast is important to help students learn and it’s also inexpensive. Breakfast in school cafeterias costs just $1.25 for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, $1.55 for high school students, and $1.80 for adults. Students from families meeting federal guidelines for free or reduced price school meals can receive a free school breakfast every day.
