May 13, 2014. The Watauga County Board of Commissioners have designated May 12-17 as “Community Pride Week” with the goal of improving the appearance of Watauga County. During this week Watauga County residents will have an opportunity to dispose of many types of waste for no charge, including old furniture, yard debris, appliances, electronics, medications and household hazardous waste. This does not apply to commercial haulers or businesses.
“This week is all about working together to protect and conserve our vast natural resources, which is essential to the continued quality of life for the residents of Watauga County,” said Watauga County Recycling Manager Lisa Doty.
“We want to provide as many opportunities as possible for residents to dispose of their waste in an environmentally responsible way.”
Following is a list of Community Pride Week events. All events are free for Watauga County Residents.
Free Disposal of Residential Debris
Monday, May 12-Saturday, May 17, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Watauga County Landfill located at 336 Landfill Road. Items that can be disposed of during this event are appliances, tires, furniture, metal, asphalt (no asphalt shingles), brick, cement, rocks, and brush (no stumps).
Household Hazardous Waste Day
Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Watauga County Landfill located at 336 Landfill Road. Items that can be disposed of during this event are paint, antifreeze, ethylene, gasoline, lighter fluid, solid and liquid pesticides, oxidizers and household cleaners. We accept used oil, all types of household batteries, lead-acid batteries and flourescent lights on this day and any time during the year.
Operation Medicine Cabinet
Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place on Saturday, May 17 form 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Food Lion (U.S. 321 Near Walmart, U.S. 421 and Blowing Rock) and the Foscoe Fire Department on N.C. 105. All prescription and over-the-counter medications and medical supplies will be accepted, no questions asked.
