Aug. 22, 2012. At Tuesday’s Watauga County Board of Commissioners meeting, the board unanimously approved a resolution honoring Watauga County Sheriff’s Deputy William Ronald Mast, 23, who was killed in the line of duty on July 26. He was survived by his wife Paige and newborn-son William Hunter Mast.

Members of the Mast family were present and received a copy of the resolution by Chairman Nathan Miller after Miller read it aloud.

The resolution reads as follows:

WHEREAS, William Ronald Mast, Jr., was born on August 16, 1988, in Watauga County to Angela Gail Wall and William Ronald Mast, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, in 2009, William Mast was hired by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, William was active in his community, serving as a member of Snow Lodge #363 AF&AM and attending Bibleway Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, on the morning of July 26, 2012, deputies from the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for assistance resulting in Deputy William R. Mast, Jr. giving the ultimate sacrifice for his community; and

WHEREAS, William is survived by his wife, Paige Greer Mast, and their newborn son, William Hunter Mast.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE WATAUGA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS extends its deepest sympathy to the family of William Ronald Mast for the loss of a beloved family member; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Commissioners stands with the citizens of Watauga County, the men and women of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, and members of the law enforcement community as they celebrate the life and mourn the loss of William Ronald Mast, Jr., a devoted husband, dedicated public servant and law enforcement hero.

The board also agreed to return Mast’s firearm to the family, which requested it for memorial purposes, along with his badge. Sheriff Len Hagaman told Commissioner Vince Gable he “had no problem” with these requests.

Gable said, “If there is anything else the family desires, we would certainly address it.”
